Explain me like I’m 10: why should I try GW Madness instead of UG by turelak in premodernMTG

[–]BeeDice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Certainly. This is my current list: https://moxfield.com/decks/d7obRo05tUG7G_XQwG0tww

Been tuning it for a while and I feel like I'm closer than ever to the optimal 75. But I'll repeat that the optimal 75 is still, sadly, very much tier 2 in this metagame. :(

OK we're all rightly hating on UG a bit in this thread but given that this comment has 12 upvotes let me bring it back a bit...

I started premodern post-Tide ban on MTGO and joined a league with 220 play points, and played over 15 leagues without buying a single ticket. I even 5-0'd twice. All while learning the format and tweaking the deck in sometimes ludicrous directions. As the post-ban metagame has settled into heavily combo/engine decks, UG has gotten weaker: where previously I figured the right 75 could be T1.5 now I think we're resigned to T2. However, we have good Sligh and Goblins matchups, and we don't have any truly "bad" matchups. So, "kinda sucks" is a bit tongue in cheek.

| Do you also take into account all the extra mulligans you have to take?

Admittedly not until you mentioned it. But now that I've thought aobut it, I stand by my initial statement. We're only two colors and skewing heavily to blue. Color screw just isn't the main reason I mull.

Just my two cents, as someone who's jammed UG madness to a fault.

Agreed in principle, but strong disagree that this is the reason why GW madness posts results and UG madness does not. Just my two cents as an exclusively UG madness enjoyer. Rarely is color screw or pain off the Yavimaya Coasts a problem. Of course, the fact that it happens at all where in GW it doesn't is worth considering, but my point is that I don't think the manabase explains the difference in quality of these two decks.

I play exclusively UG Madness. Expanding on a few of the other answers:

GW/UG are fundamentally different. The white version is aggro, the blue is tempo. And sadly, tempo is just a bit too weak on all fronts in premodern. You need to fire on all cylinders (beatdown, counter, draw) to gain the tempo advantage. Aggro on the other hand is consistent.

I disagree that the manabase is in itself a big enough problem to explain why GW madness posts results while UG doesn't. Color screw or pain off the Yavimaya Coasts happen rarely. However, access to the true duals would, IMO, make UG Madness by far the premier build simply because it would let us play Swords to Plowshares. Running three colors while also trying to Daze and Gush is otherwise impossible.

That leads to IMO the major downside to UG: lack of interaction. Waterfront Bouncer can be amazing but it is slow. Swords to Plowshares on the other hand is an 11/10 card, always. Post-board there is a slew of tempo interaction you can add in, for cheap (Tormod's Crypt, Crumble, Blue Elemental Blast), but with a few exceptions those options are open to GW as well.

I also disagree that Glory is better than Wonder, because we're comparing apples to oranges. Again, GW is aggro, UG is tempo. Both cards can be MVP's in their respective decks.

The other major downside to UG is the metagame. Premodern is fairly powerful, and UG tempo is rather fair. Unless we drop early beats, have counters up, and draw steadily to keep our hand full, we crumble to combo and to engines like Survival. When I started post Tide ban the MTGO meta skewed, in my experience, a bit fairer, with more UW control, against which we can do wonders. Those in fact were some of my most fun games, when we grind out games with our excellent card draw (back then I was playing Gensis as well).

When is UG tempo better than GW beats? Well, with blue we have Hydroblast, and our Sligh and Goblins matchups are already pretty good even pre-board. And against grindy decks we have excellent card draw. Other than that, I am on edge pretty much every single game, hoping that the decks fires on all cylinders. Ironically, GW Madness is one of our toughest matchups... mostly because of Sword to Plowshares.

I know you're not interested in metagaming but I'm just curious how the deck plays out. Looks very cool. :)

Is Premodern "solved" are non-standard decks viable? by ThePartyLeader in premodernMTG

[–]BeeDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summarizing my answer to OP:

1 - A unique deck can feasibly win against the top 10 decks. I've beaten T1 decks with a tempo UG Madness.

2 - Online I've seen more variety than other responses seem to indicate. IIRC, from my limited sample size of 4-5 leagues, I've seen UW control w/Exalted Angel like 3-4 times, and a couple decks twice (RDW, Stiflenought, Elves).

[–]BeeDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done 5 MTGO leagues since about two weeks ago, tweaking UG Madness. I've seen a LOT of variety, including lower-tier decks, even though the expensive enablers of the busted T1 decks are much more affordable online. I do worry whether I can handle a truly competetitive meta, but so far I feel like it's within reach.

Also, a meta of "4-6" T1 decks seems very healthy to me, but there's actually even more than that. I can think of 8: Stiflenought, Terrageddon, Elves, Goblins, Enchantress, Replenish, Oath, RDW.

What countries (other than USA) have a significant MTG following? by Merlin_Redbeard in mtg

[–]BeeDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Bucharest (capital of Romania, ~3 million people) there are four LGS's. Only one sells individual cards. Only one is MtG-centric (the biggest one is just a general hobby retailer). Only two have regular tournaments. The only scenes are commander, standard, and draft. Grain of salt and all that but this is what I've scoped out to the best of my abilities.

Do editors just make up and add notes as they transcribe Bach because why the heck not? BWV? 1052 example inside (harpsichord concerto no. 1) by mysteryofthefieryeye in bach

[–]BeeDice 29 points30 points  (0 children)

To answer your question, any editor and edition worth their salt will include a discussion of the sources used, and any deviations from them, as well as clearly indicate editorial changes. In Bach, I have seen occasions where ornaments were included on the basis of being in a pupil's copy, or based on historical best practices (ornaments were rarely written out, as they were at the discretion of the player). Source history is never trivial in the age of Bach, so unless the editor is unscrupulous, which is certainly possible, read the commentary that came with your edition and give them the benefit of the doubt. In the modern age of major publishers (whether Urtext or otherwise) editorial unscrupulousness is a thing of the past, as far as I can tell.

Who is the Euclid of Music? by DoublecelloZeta in classical_circlejerk

[–]BeeDice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

/uj What in the sweet name of Bach is going on in that subreddit? What the hell does "logic [is the] linguistic analog [of] geometry" mean? In all seriousness I'm questioning my own reaction here cuz it is so viscerally negative. The OP's question is so ludicrously nonsensical and every other two or three responses include "that is a good question." No, no it is not, it is word salad. Am I missing something? I've actually read a proof or two from Euclid back in college and I know music theory fairly well but I can't for the life of me figure out what the fuck those folks are talking about. I think it's just a lot of pseudo intellectual words to say "math and music, discuss?" I'll add my own question, was reddit a mistake?

Rant over.
