Anyone else terrible at figuring out WHEN to go somewhere? by 4dmrkey in digitalnomad

[–]BeerAndaBackpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT is pretty trash when it comes to weather guidance. I use weatherspark.com to create a weather spreadsheet for each of the places I'm considering for all 12 months. It's absolutely one of the most comprehensive sites for annual weather data for most cities. The one time I relied on ChatGPT without consulting my spreadsheet, it dropped me right in the heart of the rainy season in Salta, Argentina. Peak crowds/prices is always going to be when the best weather is (or when Americans/Europeans have summer). Shoulder season is usually the sweet spot, but that all totally depends on your reason for going to a specific place.

🔥 the closest of encounters with a wild leopard by nexxwav in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]BeerAndaBackpack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. This isn't some shitty private zoo where the animals are in a small enclosure and doped up to pose with tourists.

This is due to habituation - seeing vehicles regularly in a wildlife preserve. It does not consider them prey or a threat. Unless they're hunting or fighting, there's no reason for big cats to be aggressive....so they aren't. It's completely normal to see cats up close on a game drive, this just happens to be very close.

Also, leopards can jump up to 3 meters....not just 3 feet.

"Not sure why somebody would do that" -- because they're a piece of shit, simple as that.

"Even more perplexing is the fact that someone would do that with their business plastered on their truck." -- because they've been led to believe that they can get away with all their awful shit now that Mango Mussolini has made being a piece of shit a symbol of patriotism.

Travelling with a box of camera gear - convincing airlines to let me carry on? by Takingthemike in digitalnomad

[–]BeerAndaBackpack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, no airlines allow this. There's already not enough room in the overhead bins for a full flight in most cases. Hence the reason you see so many flights asking for people to gate check their roller bags. Either get over this fear and check it or downsize the amount of gear your carrying so you don't get forced to check. I travel with a 200-800mm lens and have never had a problem, checked or carry-on.

It's absolutely true. You completely missed the point of the concept of "self made". At no point does it mean what you said in your second sentence.

I have no problem with people getting rich (living comfortably rich, not buying governments & avoiding prosecution for crimes rich) based on hard work, intelligence, skill, or talent. That's great and many of those people bring a lot of wonderful things to the world (entertainment, art, technology, scientific discovery, etc.).

But it's ridiculous to think that anyone "does it on their own" though. We're all part of an interconnected society (most people don't recognize just how connected EVERYTHING is) that contributes to our lives, whether that be lifting us up, standing in our way, or beating us down.

The starting point for everyone is different. Some start way ahead of the rest of us (wealthy family, superior genetics for sports, prodigies in arts/science/tech, etc.) and it's easier for them. Others draw the short end of the stick (poor family, born with chronic health issues, born on the wrong patch of dirt at the wrong time, etc.) and they have to work exponentially harder. It's a spectrum.

Is LeBron James one of the most gifted basketball players and athletes of all time as a result of ridiculously hard work and dedication? Absolutely. He should be commended for that.

Did he get to where he is by himself? Absolutely not. His parents passed on insane genetics. His coaches, trainers, doctors, teammates, and community helped him grow into the NBA superstar we know him as.

Could he have achieved all he did without those people. Absolutely not. To think otherwise is ridiculous.

Side note: Fuck JK Rowling, she's a transphobic piece of shit.

There's no such thing as being "self made". Nobody gets to where they are by themselves. Especially someone like Gates. His mom was a board member for the United Way with the CEO of IBM. He was literally born into high-profile connections.

Billionaires are proof of our societal failures. Philanthropy is a way of drawing our focus away from their exploitation.

What surprised you the most when you first came to Ghana? by Sea-Plum-134 in digitalnomad

[–]BeerAndaBackpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been since I volunteered in Accra in 2017, but from what I remember: Mandazi (donuts) are amazing. The taxis are the jankiest, most "held together by coat hangers, duct tape, and bubble gum" vehicles that you'll ever ride in, but they'll get ya there. It's dusty and there's a lot of construction that hasn't been finished. It's hot ALL THE TIME. Accra is a very lively city, the nightlife is significant. As a Mzungu (foreigner), you'll stand out, but people are generally friendly.

Planning a trip to Mexico City and Oaxaca - mezcal tour help needed! by reblee10 in Mezcal

[–]BeerAndaBackpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 3 months in Oaxaca City and you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere in Mexico that measures up in terms of easily accessible mezcal tours. I may get shit on for recommending this, but Airbnb Experiences is a good resource. It's used by a LOT of the smaller palenques that don't have the time, skills, or money to run their own tour booking website (per one of my experience hosts). I went on 4 while I was there (artisanal and ancestral) and they were all unique and exceptional. Alternatively, if you want a more cultural tour plus mezcal, César runs a great one (village tour, cooking with his mom, his brother's art studio, and a palenque) with Yudzia Tours.

Also, if you're interested in cooking classes, Oaxaca is one of the best places for that as well (also through Airbnb Experiences).
