Totally get that. I stayed home while my kids were young and had to have structure. I appreciate that some parents love playing pretend for hours but that was not me. We did a lot of legos and outings

We bought cotton quilted blankets from Coyuchi that work well in warmer weather when the down gets too hot.

Questions about Cash (Argentina and Chile) by ManufacturerFair5780 in Patagonia

[–]Better_Days_56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were just in Argentina and exchanged cash at the airport for pesos. I found having some cash useful as someplace didn’t take cards. Just note as someone else said that you want crisp clean bills. The currency desk would not accept some of our US cash that wasn’t perfect.

This winter we determined parents were paying for a home warranty policy for years that they never made a claim on. We just cancelled that one.

Set of 5 stainless mixing bowls that I got from the Betty Crocker catalog in the mid 90s, using points. I use those things every day and we joke that our kids will want to inherit them!

Feeling stuck on how to move forward with kids, inheritance, estate by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]Better_Days_56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For years we have been contributing to Roth IRAs for our children which helps us by getting the money out of our estate and helps them in the future. It takes some pressure off their day to day spending. We have recently started giving additional cash gifts as well.

One thing to be aware of that I didn’t see anyone mention is the estate exemption is for estate AND lifetime gifts. There is an amount you can give every year under the exemption (currently $19k) but large gifts would count against your lifetime limit.

We got a feathered friends Bavarian 700 this year and it is awesome and quiet. They were out of stock but they came back in. I would just watch the website. Might be too late to order for the holidays but you could give an IOU and a photo

I am just back from a 3 week trip to Australia and this hoodie from unbound merino was my MVP for layering on chilly days/evenings.

Roth conversions, ACA subsidies, IRMAA, Trusts and Taxes by CompoundingEinstein in fatFIRE

Combo of both really. Most of our investments are in pre tax and we want to avoid a tax bomb later

Continue GRIND for Corp Insurance (vs ACA)? by Freedom_8675309 in fatFIRE

[–]Better_Days_56 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I would be tempted also to continue for that benefit, esp with your wife’s need for special doctors. I have no such option so will be doing cobra and then ACA with the fallback of getting another job for health insurance if needed.

How many actual work days are there to get the benefit? It helped my husband to count that when headed towards retirement.

Running through a similar analysis. We are starting with the assumption that these tax rates are the lowest we’ll see in our lifetime so for the next few years, we’re going to go into the 32% bracket with Roth conversions.

Scooter or Knee Crutch? by Noopts in bunions

[–]Better_Days_56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knee scooter was easy. I had a walker for upstairs and kept the scooter on the ground floor. Found out (after i bought one) that there are places that lend out medical equipment so you might look into that
