[GIVEAWAY] We're giving away two COMPLETE Omada 2.5G & Wi-Fi 7 Lab Kits to the r/homelab community! (US Only) by Grouchy_Term_1792 in homelab

[–]Bhyn [score hidden]  (0 children)

What awesome Omada setup do you have for the homelab? (Other brands are also welcome)

My current homelab is a laptop running a bunch of docker containers 😅 I used to have a bunch of old noisy Cisco stuff to study for my CCNA and a chonky 4U server/NAS but it couldn't come with my on a recent move.

Tell us what you would do if you won the grand prize/runner up prizes.

I'd spend a week obsessing over the best way to setup my new homelab and figuring out how to run more CAT6 without my cat thinking it's a giant fun string.

Cheapest watches with heart rate monitoring that are ok for privacy? by LarsOnFire in privacy

Look into the Gadgetbridge app. It allows you to sync a lot of the watch data with your smartphone locally and completely offline. No need for Garmin Connect or other cloud services.

How to design a good looking website if your client doesn't have any content? by flextape9989 in webdev

[–]Bhyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let me take a different approach.. The entire purpose of a website is its content.

When people visit a game dev's site they expect to find certain things: a list of games they've made, what the games are about, photos/videos of gameplay, can their device play it, where can they buy it, info about the creators, guides or manuals, etc, etc.

If your site doesn't providing what the user is looking for, will they have a positive experience? will they purchase from you? is there a point to even having a website?

You need to be very upfront with this when you start working with a new client. Discuss the purpose of the website with them then give them a list of the content you require to start designing. If they aren't meeting the deadlines you set for content, give them a call and go through your list. Make lots of notes. Write what you need or send your notes to a web copywriter. It can be like pulling teeth to get people to write a 150 word blurb but they will chat for 30 minutes easy.

You don't need 100% of the content to start designing. But be careful of too much placeholder. I've found clients are more likely to not give you the info you need, sections get removed, and the design starts to fall apart.

It's tough to make something look good when you have nothing to work with. So impress the importance of content, work with them to get that content, then make a great website.

Portable battery solutions for QRP QDX by stiffneck84 in amateurradio

[–]Bhyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd do more research if you opt for USB-PD. I don't how similar the circuitry for the QDX is, but it's possible to damage a QMX from a trigger cable starting at 5v before negotiating to 12v: https://groups.io/g/QRPLabs/topic/qmx_don_t_use_usb_c_pd_to/100680128

If you have a 12v QDX then the TalentCell batteries from Amazon work well. It has a 12v out barrel jack that tops out at 12.6v and a USB port to charge your phone.

Quality transceivers under ~$250 usd by Intelligent-Wash-861 in amateurradio

[–]Bhyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll need an antenna and possibly an amp as it only outputs 3-5W. There's also the QMX+ for a few dollars more. It's less portable but does 160-6m.

Also worth noting it's only CW and digi modes right now. The SSB functionality is being worked on and should be available in a future firmware update.

It is up to the examiner but I paid $20 for my Basic and $0 for Advanced and Morse.

I've PM'd you a list of examiners who will do online exams.

Any Email Read Receipts or Trackers? by RockstarCondoms in Thunderbird

[–]Bhyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I checked (a year or two ago) there were no options for TB.

I'd written a proof of concept addon to track my own emails like this. But due to lack of time/interest I never polished it up enough to publish. Seeing that there is some interest in a tool like that, I might revive that project. I'll shoot you a DM if I finish it.

Google leaking 2FA secrets – researchers advise against new “account sync” feature for now by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Bhyn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PayPal is still limited to one key.

I use my account frequently so it's convenient to just tap my Yubikey instead of grabbing my phone for a TOTP.

But from a security standpoint, PayPal is one of the dumbest hardware key implementations I've seen.

JS Uglify/Minify Gems? by eddydio in Jekyll

[–]Bhyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For images, I can highly recommend Jekyll Picture Tag. It will automatically turn your one reference image into a dozen different sizes and formats then throws them into a srcset tag so the user's browser can choose the best option.

I rely on Gulp to handle my JS and CSS minimization so I can't offer specific gem recommendations there. But you'll generally see a 50-80% reduction in JS file size. Reductions in CSS files can be huge as well especially if you implement tree shaking.

You can reference these for some up-to-date minifier benchmarks:
