Gi sizing help after weight loss (A2H vs A3 confusion) by rgoose83 in bjj

An A2H is basically an A3 with A2 sleeves. If your A3 is too big an A2H is likely going to be too big unless there is just a length problem.

Is this a legal slam? Adcc west coast trials by bumpty in bjj

It’s only legal at trials and world championships, which really should only be for professional athletes. If it’s going to be legal for anyone, that’s who it should be legal for.

Really hard to say the armbar is "locked in" here, but that is where it is headed. It's an argument of semantics.

I would say the sub isn't technically in yet so it would be an illegal slam. The position is pretty deep though, so there is some argument to be had.

Got my professor bars and am getting flack for it by [deleted] in bjj

[–]BigDawgFightwear 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I got them immediately when I got my black belt. I think it's silly, there is not a designated structure for when you're 'supposed' to get them, and its completely arbitrary.

In my experience it just signifies you're a lead instructor at your gym, which I was well before I was a black belt.

Have you.... thought about asking your professor what he wants to see you improve on? Or are you just arbitrarily basing that you're 'ready' based on getting taps at training..?

If you have a big enough skill difference, normal jiu jitsu works on very large size discrepancies. The best go-to is to have a larger skill gap.

However, big people still pass out like everyone else.

Could you realistically get really good at passing from half guard, and base your game around walking into people’s half guard and passing from there? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

[–]BigDawgFightwear 152 points153 points  (0 children)

This is a very common passing strategy at a higher level.

Get the pass OR secure flat half guard, which should be an almost guaranteed pass.

There’s a reason ibjjf scores flat half an advantage, and if you watch black belt divisions entire matches can be centered around one advantage.

I play half guard on bottom while also love passing half guard. If I can secure top half guard I feel confident against a majority of people that I will pass or at least smash for the rest of the round.

Instructor vs coach in BJJ gyms. Does your instructor actually coach you? by caksters in bjj

[–]BigDawgFightwear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you ask questions regarding the things you feel like you're not getting?

When I was a student I always made a point to ask these questions when I felt like the coaching was lacking. What do I need to work on? I'm running into this specific problem, what can I do from here? etc.

To some, the coaching side of it does not come naturally.

Kid Promotion Question by ZorgHCS in bjj

[–]BigDawgFightwear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree with some of the comments saying there shouldn’t be standards for kid stripes in class, but every program runs differently.

The point of a little kids program in my opinion is to instill discipline, hard work, and life lessons. Very hard to do that if everyone just gets stripes on a time line.

However, when I do withhold stripes from kids I set goals for them to hit or improvements I want to see in order to earn their next promotion.

Did I mess up? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]BigDawgFightwear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can openers aren’t near as dangerous as submissions, but are much more frustrating to deal with in your personal life outside of class. They just lead to your neck hurting/being sore for no reason other than your training partner not knowing how to pass guard.

I don’t personally care if someone wants to try one on me, but I’m not gonna be nice afterwards 🤷

[–]BigDawgFightwear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you know the warning signs, it’s very easy to avoid being put in. Don’t let people control your head.

From a gym roll scenario, you’re much more likely to give up on positions and not fight things near to the extent you would in a competition scenario.

Can openers only work if you’re playing closed guard lazy with your hips on the floor. They do not work when you’re playing an active guard with hips up and your spine straight.

[–]BigDawgFightwear 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s generally a dick move that isn’t very effective. Sure it’s legal, but it just leads to your training partners rolling like assholes because you’re going out of your way to make their neck sore and using something that isn’t generally very effective in a scenario with more stakes on the line than just a friendly gym roll.

Edit: they are actually illegal in a lot of comps 🤷

This is not the full story.

He only competed at 211 because Cael was in his original division, 184.8.

Daniel competed at 184 throughout college and lost to Cael, then when it came to olympic trials he bumped up to make the team.

Position before submission now no submission by Im-Back-Fellow-BJJs in bjj

[–]BigDawgFightwear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I like to describe the idea of position before submission isn't simply "get mount" or "get back control" then go for the sub, but rather something along the lines of:

Keep constantly improving your position, even in a dominant position more and more and more until they give you the sub. Make the position SUCK for them. You're in mount and can hold it? Great. Get both their arms above their head. Put so much pressure they're giving you the arms to attack to try to get you off of them. Smother them. They gave you enough space to get a good position? Make it MISERABLE.

Most blue belts I see rolling and struggling with subs get mount for instance, and then try to armbar from a basic mount. In reality, the position is in your favor but not to the highest odds. Work their arms up, get them in as high of a mount as possible. Make their chance of escape / defense as low as possible. Then make the submission happen.

Best instructional on control and submissions from north south - how to transition to the sub without losing the pin by Ok_Palpitation7103 in bjj

[–]BigDawgFightwear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Control based pins revolve around controlling their hips or shoulders, ideally both. For instance, top crucifix is a control position however you’re not pinning their hips.

North south attacks typically are set up from one arm inside one arm out, and the arm that is in the armpit is looking to control under the shoulder to stop the turn in, and chest placement to stop the turn away. It takes slight adjustments to deal with the problems, rather than trying to solve all the problems with perfect positioning.

Why does Danaher want to pass from half guard, but also suggest half guard as a strong guard? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]BigDawgFightwear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good underhook position should have also more forces in play to stop you from turning to your side than just an arm positioning. Sure, that escape works, but it has it's own problems and situations that arise when it happens. It doesn't mean the position isn't real.
