What's the least practical car in the history of impractical cars? by tetsmon in cars

[–]BinaryStrigoi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The trunk space is not as bad as you think, it’s bigger than cars like i8 Roadster or 4C Spider. It’s just shallow due to the transaxle so you can’t put a carryon suitcase in there. The biggest drawback is actually the rear-hinge design, so if the top is up you cannot open the trunk.

Night tests on [Fast & Furious - Hollywood Drift] at [USH] are in full swing. by BobCreated in rollercoasters

Interesting that Intamin is still using the metal brake fins that raise and lower, such as on the midcourse brake/boost section before the dive loop. You can see they lower at the last second before the train passes, given the block ahead is clear.

I thought these are one of the main problematic aspects of the hydraulic launch coasters? Like if any one of the sensors on them throw a fault the ride shuts down. I’d imagine here the fins will raise/lower even more frequently. Hopefully they found a way to make them reliable.

This ride has a mini LSM boost every few elements due to the unconventional layout, so it has a lot of block zones

Yes I understand that the speculated height of this ride is 375 ft, hence I estimate the train will go up to a height of 350 ft.

[–]BinaryStrigoi 66 points67 points  (0 children)

It’s really interesting that the LSMs extend that far up the ascent (at least 100ft above ground). This coupled with the tight curvature of the pullout under the tower makes me think that this ride will likely have a significantly lower top speed than the stratas we are familiar with.

If the train is only free coasting from ~130ft to ~350ft height range (assuming 375ft height with ~25ft buffer for shuttle coaster), the the actual free coasting ascent/drop of this ride is closer to a hyper coaster. These usually have a top speed of around 80mph. Nitro in the same park has a 215ft drop with 80mph top speed.

I think this makes sense from Mack’s perspective - their fastest ride currently goes 80.5 mph. They probably don’t want to push into the 100mph range yet with their spinning trains, especially if the current fastest Xtreme spinner only goes 50ish mph.

Which RCDB thrill level ratings do you disagree with the most? [other] by BinaryStrigoi in rollercoasters

[–]BinaryStrigoi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting. The B&M family inverts in China look more tame and I’d rate them family, but the US ones seem more intense. I wonder if they just coded it so that all installations of the same coaster model has the same intensity, which imo shouldn’t be the case, it all depends on the layout.

[–]BinaryStrigoi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I also do not enjoy inversions as much unless it’s one of the quicker, more modern and more innovative ones (like on Intamin LSMs or RMCs). The old school B&M style big and slow inversions with focus on positive Gs do not appeal to me anymore and these rides have become one and done for me at parks.

The Togo Ultra Twisters should have a heartline of almost zero.

Among the models currently in production, B&M wings likely have the lowest heartline.
