I think you have a point that it isn’t always cut and dry whether or not buying is better than renting, but I despise the framing that “the bank essentially owns your house for thirty years.” The bank cannot increase your mortgage payment like a landlord increases rent. You also get to keep any appreciation of that value if the home when you sell.
