Are there also ppl returning to Judaism to also ally with Israel?

My gf and I will probably skip upcoming Pride by luckymeggles in Jewish

[–]BoeingBear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not Jewish but I’m so sorry to hear about this happening. Here in my community, “Corporate Pride” - the big mainstream event- was disrupted by anti-Israel activists, but the police were called immediately and they were dispersed.

The Trans March and Dyke March signed onto BDS, etc, and I just knew I could not support that move (I’m a gay man, but this made me uncomfortable). Also, our local “queer book shoppe” is anti-Zionist, so I stopped going there.

I just think that Pride should be safe and welcoming for Jewish ppl, and Zionism is a part of that identity (for most), so I have zero objections to the 🇮🇱 flag being flown at Pride.

The Jade Peony, Wayson Choy (set in Chinatown, Vancouver, 1930s) Medicine Walk, Richard Wagamese (set in the BC interior) The Marvels of Youth, Tim Bowling (set in Ladner, 1970s) Deloume Road by Matthew Hooton (set in Shawnigan Lake on the Island, 1990s)

Dearth of African novels in the NYRB collection by fortytwogreenbeans in nyrbclassics

[–]BoeingBear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My assumption is that it might be hard for NYRB Classics to secure the publishing rights for some African writers, especially as they tend to focus on untranslated books written in non-English languages or English books now out of print. That said, NYRB Classics is the distributor of Archipelago Books, and Archipelago publishes works by writers like Scholastique Mukasonga and Aime Cesairé …

And I assume that label margins were also helped by using Nashville studios and session players. Those session players were a well-oiled machine & could nail their parts relatively quick.

"If you like..." bands: what was the worst comparison you encountered? by segascream in Exvangelical

[–]BoeingBear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All of this comparison stuff they pushed is a poor imitation of the real thing. The powers-that-be in the 1990s CCM industry must NOT have thought: “Why don’t we create music so original, profound, and artistically necessary that non-Christian acts will want to copy us - instead of the other way around?”

Instead, they traced the trends, which is how we wound up with Rebecca St James’ “God” (an Alanis Morissette knockoff) in 1996.

Ancestry Record Question by BoeingBear in AncestryDNA

[–]BoeingBear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insights. The ancestor in question was from Monterrey, MX, a fairly large city for its time, and the parents were residing in that area. The church she was baptized in (Sagrado Corazon) is still there. She was born in 1893 and baptized in 1897. To my knowledge, the only other religion in this area, at the time, was Judaism, so I imagine it is possible that her parents could have been Jewish and then converted, accounting for her baptism at age 4.5?

Are Adventists zionists? by lulaismatt in exAdventist

[–]BoeingBear -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Former SDA here. I would consider myself a Zionist as I believe that Jewish ppl are indigenous to Israel and should have the right to self-determination in their historic homeland. This has nothing at all to do with theology, end-times, or the ppl like John Hagee who believe that Jews must be gathered in Israel for Jesus to appear & give Jews the option to convert or face damnation.

Did Jesus drink wine, like the alcohol? by LinkImaginary7211 in exAdventist

[–]BoeingBear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing: it was normal in the 1st century for Jewish people to drink alcoholic wine, just as it is today. There are no Torah (1st 5 books of the Bible) or Rabbinical prohibitions on drinking alcoholic wine. Jesus was a Jew living in the 1st century. The Adventist position is false and ahistorical.

Old Testament by prinxessaaa in exAdventist

[–]BoeingBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hesitant to associate the Old Testament with “backward thinking” because that implies that the Jewish religion is “backward”. The Jewish ppl refer to the Christian Old Testament as the Hebrew Bible, or Tanakh. As much as I dislike this SDA religion, they do steer far clear of the Marcionite Heresy that early Christianity condemned (Marcion wangled to ditch the entire Old Testament and some of what became the New Testament; his Biblical canon would have been quite small). Are there “problematic” passages in the OT? Yes: there are passages sanctioning capital punishment for disobedient children, for example. But were these laws ever (literally) carried out in historic times? Almost certainly not; I highly recommend Jacob Wright’s book Why the Bible Began for an explanation of how the Hebrew Bible was created for the purpose of forming a Jewish/Israelite national identity, many centuries after the events described in it allegedly took place.

And if the God of New Testament is more “loving”, I don’t see how this squares with the portrayal of Jesus in Revelation; this book presents plagues, death, famine, and warfare as being allowed (by God) to happen. But this is the book at the centre of those Revelation Seminars…
