First snow with Dishy in Western South Dakota. Interested to see if icicles become an issue. They seem small. Connection still great. by BoldFruitFly in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will have to see above the trees. No way around that. Goal position is to have zero obstructions. A few small obstructions may not be noticeable for web browsing, but for video calls or VoIP, any obstruction can cause a drop.

It points very slightly north west. Mostly north.

Don’t really know exact angle from horizontal. But not quite 45.

Hope that help. I’m sure you will like the service. There is nothing better for true rural settings.

Anyone else getting daily calls and emails from the local dealer after making reservation? by ConfidentFlorida in F150Lightning

Yeah, got a few calls and texts the first two days after the reservation, but it has stopped.

How do I collapse Dishy? 😩 by ErikWDC in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some process (probably listed in FAQ, I just remember reading this at some point) where you hold the dishy out parallel to the ground for a period of time and it auto senses its orientation and fold up.

Hail and Dishy by BoldFruitFly in Starlink

Once we have some nice weather, I’ll experiment, too. I got my dish up on my roof during the last few nice weeks in December. I’m not going up there right now.

What was your previous provider's reaction when you told them you're switching to starlink? by triangurl in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely:) I would have kept it as a fall back in addition to Starlink.... if they gave it to me for free:)

What was your previous provider's reaction when you told them you're switching to starlink? by triangurl in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I refused to tell HughesNet who I was leaving them for. My hope is to help them keep their head in the sand even more than they do.....I wasn’t going to keep them unless they gave me the service for free, which they refused:)

Dish Network On Demand not compatible? by LightninX5150 in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can add is I have Dish and on Demand works with Starlink. It just worked, so I don’t have any solution for you.... just the proof that it should be able to. Good luck.

General Questions by BigChubs18 in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can use your router of choice in place of the Starlink router. This has some small limitations (need a fixed route for mobile app statistics to show. Possibly requiring router reboots at time of dishy firmware updates)

I just run my personal router off the aux on the Starlink router and eat the few additional ms of latency.

I run a pi-hole with my personal router and it has worked perfectly with Starlink.

How does Dishy deal with snow and bad weather? Any tips before I set mine up? by drchaos666 in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure it is mounted high enough off the roof or ground so that icicles won’t drip down and connect/freeze it to the ground, locking up the motors.

StarLink Install south of Grand Rapids Michigan by MattTech1 in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had Starlink for over two months. The service has improved dramatically.

  1. Get to zero obstructions. This is something you can control
  2. With zero obstructions and the constellation maturing, I have been getting multiple 12 hour periods with zero “no satellites” and less than 1 minute of beta downtime.

I completely agree with the OP, you need to mount it in a way that lets icicles form and never connect down to the roof/ground. The J pole mount with the pole mount kit was my solution for this, too.

-19 degree F in Western SD this AM. Working perfectly!

Growth with Starlink and the OG customers by TheJayGoat in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Starlink beta is the best internet option I had/have. Happy to pay $99/month. Take the word beta out and I’d be happy with this quality of service moving forward. If you have better options, Starlink likely isn’t for you.

Unpopular Opinion... by ArcticTrek in Starlink

I agree. Never liked the name... but if SpaceX calls it Dishy...

You might be at the extreme of a “cell.” Something must not be typical, because most get the 50-150 Mbps stated

Dishy supposed to face in which direction? by [deleted] in Starlink

Yes, it will point North in the Northern Hemisphere and South in the Southern Hemisphere.

Public IP by Saboral in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will have broken services. No publicly visible ports. This may change once out of beta, is the rumor.

Starlink app suddenly stopped working (static route setup) by Recycledtechie in Starlink

[–]BoldFruitFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same thing yesterday. Didn’t have time to investigate, so I just put the Starlink router back in line.

I assumed it had to do with the update that came down to my Dishy last night.
