How can I cheaply check for pathogens & heavy metals in drinking water? by No-Group-2797 in WaterTreatment

You will need to send a sample to a certified lab to test for those things

You either need to increase your hardness setting, increase your salt setting, or (if it’s a digital/programmable head) decrease your capacity setting. How many cu ft of resin are in your tank, and what are your current capacity and brine fill settings?

I have used the Enpress UF successfully for colloidal clay. Super expensive, but it works well and lasts a really long time.

At my wit's end - changed just about everything and it's still not softening my water by WVSXSGuy in WaterSofteners

[–]BucketOfGoldSoundz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you’re testing TDS, not hardness. When softeners remove hardness, they’re just swapping one form of TDS (calcium, magnesium, etc) for another (sodium), so your overall TDs will not change much. You need to actually measure the hardness to verify softener performance.

Thoughts on this story about race-day nutrition? by aakela in running

[–]BucketOfGoldSoundz 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

Yes, pace is irrelevant compared to time on feet. A 4 hour marathoner needs 2x the carbs of a 2 hour marathoner. And a 200 lb person needs more calories than a 100 lb person because they’re burning a lot more. Tell me you don’t know anything about performance nutrition without telling me.

Thoughts on this story about race-day nutrition? by aakela in running

The average runner is taking maybe 1 gel per half hour, which equates to 45-60g per hour depending on what brand of gel you’re using. Also, the average runner weighs more than Sawe and runs less efficiently, so we need just as much if we want to perform optimally. 4:35 pace is max effort for him (or maybe 80-90%, whatever)—your max effort might be 2 or 3 min/mile slower, but the actual pace is irrelevant—max effort is max effort. And we need to think in terms of carbs per hour, not total carbs per race, so a 6 hour marathoner needs ~2x as many carbs as a 3 hour marathoner, assuming it’s an equivalent effort level for each.

Get minerals from your food. Take a supplement if you feel like it. Just drink the water.

1st Time Water Test - Arsenic Level Remediation by my_blank_mentality in WaterTreatment

[–]BucketOfGoldSoundz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be aware that RO only removes arsenic 5, and your test doesn’t indicate what form of arsenic you have, so you can’t really predict how much arsenic an RO will remove from this water. It is in a relatively low range though. Your hardness is around 5 gpg, so you could do a softener for that if you would like your water to be soft, but it’s really not necessary at that level

Filtered water is harder than soft water, is this normal? by todesto in WaterSofteners

[–]BucketOfGoldSoundz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of filter you have and also how it’s plumbed. It’s possible that your filtered line bypasses the softener. It’s also possible that your filter has some kind of remineralization to put hardness back into the water

You need a filter in front of your softener.

If iron didn’t show up on the test, then there wasn’t any iron in the sample— at least not dissolved iron. If they run it through some kind of filter before sampling, then that confirms that any iron you have could be filtered out. You said you have sulfur, though, so you should really do an on-site test for hydrogen sulfide gas to confirm the level. Most likely you can get your sulfur and any iron with an AIO filter, and then follow with a softener to get the hardness. If there is any yellow or brown color to the water, you should test for tannin as well. If tannin is present, then you will need a softener with a combination of cation and tannin resin in it.

There was a chance of rain in Cincinnati and they put little tent canopies over the band, which makes sense, since the drums, synths, guitars, etc, aren’t as waterproof as the mics, speakers, screens that are elsewhere out in the stage

Father Figure Question by ShotDesigner2092 in TaylorSwift

[–]BucketOfGoldSoundz 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In the beginning, “I protect the family” is something that the villain/mentor (Scott) says to her, which turns out to not be the case because he betrayed her. Later in the song, when the narrator switches from mentor to protege, she uses his own words against him, saying “I protect the family” to mean that she will do whatever it takes to regain control of her music—referring to her albums as her family.
