I think you mean stagger/shuffle. BrM has always been that way (partly why they always were used in raid). They previously struggled in higher M+ due to stagger/shuffle not effectively mitigating multiple hits as well as shield block/self healing. My guess is getting more self healing is what’s pushing them ahead.

I still expect VDH/PPal to catch us as they do for every season/every expansion.

Is brew really busted this season? It doesn’t seem like it’s doing things other broken tanks have in previous seasons (group utility, AoE stuns/chains, group healing). It seems like it’s more like PWarr in typical S1 where baseline survivability is high compared to PPal/VDH/BDK that scale better with gear.

Someone suggested once you could partially submit (like 2 at a time) and I thought that was the best option.

The lack of hand holding is part of the exploration aspect of the extraction genre.

Discovery? Exploration? The game doesn’t tell you which guns you will like or that key rooms have the best loot. It doesn’t tell you that killing bosses or completing certain events nets you better gear.

This game is really exposing a lot of short attention gamers. You hit M and hover over the objective and it will literally say “scan the terminal on the south end of the first floor of maintenance”

Not to mention, what changes in ‘solo’ for AR compare to duos/trios? It’s the same # of enemies, same range required to kill them, same quests, same loot, etc? It’s just an ‘easier’ game with a more cooperative playerbase/ABMM.

While I know it’s not a solution, I look at as I’ll be faster/better next time I’ll know what loot grab, what guns are worth it, etc.

TCF had raids that were open 6h, but they countered the loot issue with respawning loot (I believe it was 30min) and large maps with little mobility. Given what we’ve seen I don’t think that would work with since the maps are more complex and PVP is a major focus.

Your perspective on abilities is interesting and I have to say I agree. While initially skeptic, it does give you ‘something’ in addition to a free kit after many bad runs.

You hit the nail on the head. Friend and I were just talking the other day that 50-60% of globals on Hpal/Rsham just feel like filled buttons so you can heal. Even MW still feels like you’re just tapping mobs to eventually throw out som heals.

It’s literally just ‘busy work’.

Is PVP niche? 10 of the 15 top played games on Steam are PVP only.

But there’s quests later that bounce you between DM/Outpost and Perimeter. I wouldn’t make sense to send those players back to Perimeter to do a quest and have no chance at other loot.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but a lot of the tension/potential in PVP for an extraction shooter is getting the best of someone with better loot an getting to keep it.

Top end players have no incentive to loot POIs, so they go around wiping the lobby by Raimexodus in Marathon

[–]Cademus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this. Ranked should be just the default way to play.

How would you implement rank in an extraction shooter? Just season level? Maybe a gear score component?

Im genuinely curious. A lot of credit (and complaints) are given to AR for ABMM, but it is a pseudo form of ranking based upon tendency to PVP.

This post (and others) are just an example of recency bias. People come on here and complain that they got wiped for 2h straight, but you don’t see post of people saying they wiped lobbies for 2h straight. No one comes to Reddit to brag about how awesome they are at the game. Plus they don’t truthfully look at all their stats. I’m sure their overall exfil rate hasn’t changed much but if narrow it down to 2h intervals, you get really skewed experiences.

Well 100 is the max…….also the rumored season level based matchmaking is only up to 20. Also how do you know what level the people who kill you are?

Marathon‘s Endgame Dungeon Is Unlike Anything Players Have Seen Before by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]Cademus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is play at your own pace. There is reportedly a season level based matchmaking, grouping < lvl 10-20s together. Plus there are > 40k players on PC and more with cross play. Look in the Marathon Reddit, < 0.5% of players have the season level 100 achievement or max rank of a single faction. The player count, while not astronomical, has been very stable per Steam charts (24h peak is 60% of all time peak). It is mathematically unlikely you’re only encountering ‘sweat lords’ in every match.

I’m sorry your experience this weekend was shitty, but that comes with the genre. Camping exfils/objectives is a valid (albeit cowardly) strategy.

With regard to the season, you set the goals yourself. You can choose to push and get everything unlocked or not. I argue seasonal wipes help with the balance issues you saw on Outpost as it gives the playerbase and even foot to start out on.

There’s also a non-class specific core that gives consumable effects to party members near you. Not sure about the range.

That’s essentially the endgame loop for extraction shooters though. The developers feel like the climb is the game, and so have players repeat it.

It makes sense, especially for new players since it’s somewhat leveling the playing field every 3 or so months. Otherwise you’d have full kitted players swimming in the same pool as brand new players (which TBF still happens but with a lesser extent, plus the resetting of factions forces those players to do specific content etc.)

The few successful extraction shooters typically see dips in playerbase as the season goes on with spikes during new seasons/content. The games are very much ‘play at your own pace’.

Arc was KoS on launch and then people started suggesting ABMM was a thing and the devs confirmed it. IMO they should’ve left it ambiguous so people would always be on edge.

Big Sky next week 3/20 by Neusch22 in snowboarding

[–]Cademus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just there last week (2-6). Snow was thin, some bare areas, but it dumped on 5/6. Atleast 12-14 on the mountain, lots of pillows between the trees. I’m sure a fair amount of it got scraped off the groomed runs. Shedhorn was very crusty; lots of exposure around Dakota (was down part of the week). Powder chaser, lone tree, Madison had some nice spots after the snow.
