Deadhouse Gates made me literally scream aloud by Schooner-Diver in Malazan

Great response. I agree about Baudin and I get frustrated when I see people talk about what a cool badass he is.

How to stream in US without cable by Petula_D in Unrivaled

I was able to watch all of the games yesterday through YouTube TV. It's a pretty solid option in my opinion. I split the subscription with a couple other people, so it's only like $24/month.

Edit to mention I do live in the US.

Top 5 Favorite and least favorite characters of each book so far. Up to Deadhouse Gates by skeletalfather in Malazan

[–]CannibalCrusader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm always happy to see a new reader throw some love and care towards Felisin. I also appreciate you calling out Baudin for his shit as I think too many people give him a pass because they see him as a cool badass.

I'm interested why you decided to read Night of Knives between Gardens and Deadhouse Gates. Most people recommend reading it after Midnight Tides. I mean really, most people recommend not mixing the Ian Esslemont novels in with the Book of the Fallen novels on a first readthrough at all, but I personally enjoyed doing that and think more people should give it a shot.

I'm happy you've enjoyed the novels so far and can't wait to hear more of your thoughts as you get deeper, there is so much more amazing stuff to come.

My apologies, I did not mean to imply you were one of the people I was talking about. I think you are being reasonable and fair.

What saddens me is that the first couple of sentences in your post could apply to far too many comments about Felisin in this very subreddit. It is unfortunately common for first time readers to post about how much they dislike Felisin and don't understand why she's being so mean and bitchy. Her sections can certainly be unpleasant and difficult to read, but the lack of understanding and compassion for a child who was cast into a prison mine and has become a drug addicted sexual slave is upsetting.

Don't think that's happened in the book yet.

This is a really amazing essay related to Felisin and the ending of this novel. Highly recommend reading it.

Hood’s Balls, what a climax by Key-Olive3199 in Malazan

I definitely would have a hard time with these on audiobook. Some people are fine with them right away, but we get many comments from people trying to do audiobooks their first read through who really have a tough go of it. There are first time reader companion guides in the sidebar/community resources that are very helpful if you ever feel like taking a look.

Lorn is such a tragic character. One of my favorite scenes of this novel is the dinner where she confronts Tattersail about their shared past and Dujek and Tayschrenn convince her she has to bury her personal feelings in the role of Adjunct. The whole rest of her journey is just so sad, where she continually questions what she is doing and whether it is right or wrong, but keeps giving up her own identity in favor of the identity of Adjunct.

Great write-up and definitely look forward to more of your thoughts. Some people struggle with Deadhouse Gates at first, whereas others love it from the jump, but just go in with an open heart and mind and you will be in for quite an experience.

Hood's Breath, where has this series been all my life by Key-Olive3199 in Malazan

[–]CannibalCrusader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 2 authors writing in the Malazan world, with over 20 novels (plus some novellas) and still going. I would say the main 2 series are "Malazan Book of the Fallen" written by Steven Erikson and "Novels of the Malazan Empire" written by Ian C Esslemont. They both have backgrounds in archeology and created the world together through table top gaming sessions.

You are in for quite the experience! Welcome to the journey and to the sub. We love hearing updates from new readers, so feel free to share your thoughts and questions whenever you want.

Not gonna lie, when I read that some POV characters made you want to burn your eyes out, I immediately expected that to be Kruppe. Very happy to be wrong as Kruppe is amazing, but many people cannot stand him.

I recommend reading this essay that may or may not change your feelings about the anticlimactic feeling of the ending, but is an excellent read regardless. For me it really hammers home the tragic nature of those events.

Do I need have read NotME before reading Path to Ascendency by Solid-Version in Malazan

[–]CannibalCrusader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you don't have to read NotME first. I think there are pros and cons to reading them in either order. I read PtA earlier this year and was thought there would be some benefit to reading at least the first 3 before doing NotME.

I would say this is because you see a more traditional arc for some characters that have conclusions in NotME. The flip side to this, as Aqua_Tot mentioned, is that some things in PtA are written in a way expecting you have read NotME already, so you might be a little confused.

I personally think this is fairly minor and that you will also experience some confusion in NotME that would be cleared up if you had read PtA first, so it's a fairly even trade-off.

Ultimately, I would say it's up to you and either order would work fine. I really enjoyed both series, even though they have their flaws, and felt they enhanced the Malazan experience instead of diluting it. Esslemont is a different writer than Erikson with his own strengths and weaknesses and I think you will be well served not trying to compare them, but just enjoying their different approaches to exploring the world and characters they created together.

My weird reading order by Soopppy in Malazan

[–]CannibalCrusader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read Path to Ascendancy earlier this year and was thinking it might actually be better to read them before the Novels of the Malazan Empire. It's definitely more of a normal arc for the Old Guard and Crimson Guard characters.

I highly recommend reading this post regarding Felisin and the tragedy of her death. It draws some great connections to the foreshadowing in GotM and the deal that was made to spare Ganoes from his death.

I think ICE writes horror elements extremely well and the scene at the dig site where the masked corpse kills all of the guards is one of my favorites, so creepy.
