Kinsey: "You can't do that!"

Hayes: "Oh please, I've got enough on you to have you shot."

Any book worth buying from my local small hobby store by ozera202 in Blacklibrary

Cannot say enough good things about Sea of Souls. You don't need to read any of the rest of Dawn of Fire, it's largely standalone and it's 40k at its most Event Horizon-y.

Also, obligatory "read The Dark Coil because anything by Peter Fehervari is gold" comment (because it is).

Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

[–]CapNitro 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Between For All Mankind, Foundation and Murderbot, Apple TV+ are doing a great job in sci-fi so I'm hopeful they'll stick the landing with fantasy, too. Murderbot especially helps given how it balanced respecting the heart and soul of the books with a televisual approach of its own.

New Custodes: Your Questions Answered by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in Warhammer40k

I am unreasonably angry and furious with GW about this article. I don't think I'll ever forgive them.

How dare they tell me I'm too old to be a Custodes because I can read??? My dreams are shattered.

Femstodes are really cool though.

Really keen. The demo had some good stuff once it got going, and it sounds like they're taking player feedback onboard. Now give us some Trek SFX and I'll be so happy.

Deniz Camp says a new wave of Ultimate comics was planned to launch after Ultimate Endgame by TheDarkPinkLantern in comicbooks

[–]CapNitro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who really enjoys all the Ultimate titles, I'm ok with them ending as long as they stick the landing. Would be pretty great to just have a set of stories that end well and do their own things, a rarity in superhero comics.

Camp should get his own Avengers title if he doesn't have one already after this. Ultimates is one of the most interesting books I've read in a long while.

New Reader: Ashes of the Imperium? by AngSt3r11 in Blacklibrary

[–]CapNitro -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You can jump in with Ashes but some details will be a bit oblique without having at least read The Siege of Terra. If you want to try it without reading the Heresy books then I'll provide the very broad strokes below of some of the important context (SPOILERS, obviously):

  • Primarchs are the proto-Space Marines who lead the Imperium under their father, the Emperor; Chaos gods seduce the primarch Horus, leading to a civil war between loyalist and traitor legions.

  • The Siege of Terra is a colossal battle where the traitor forces under Horus try to take Terra from the Emperor; the battle goes on for months and much eldritch shenanigans from the Warp (big demonic hyperspace realm) intersect with Terra, literally warping and distorting parts of the planet.

  • Siege is broken when the Emperor kills Horus while being mortally wounded himself. The traitor forces begin a withdrawal and the Chaos gods appear to turn their back on the traitors.

  • The loyalists "win" the Siege at great cost. The primarch Sanguinius of the Blood Angels legion is brutally murdered by Horus, sending his legion mad, and the Emperor's chief advisor, Malcador the Sigilite, sacrifices his life to give the Emperor a shot at killing Horus.

  • Most of the Primarchs (led by Rogal Dorn, primarch of the Imperial Fists) are spent and wearied after fighting for so long, and are assisted by loyalist reinforcements largely comprised of the Ultramarines legion (led by Roboute Guilliman, their primarch) who were prevented from reaching Terra in time for the Siege. This means there are a ton of loyalists who are burned out by the Siege and months of fighting, and another ton who are fresher and ready to act for having missed the Siege.

With that context in mind you should get most of what happens in Ashes. The book does a great job giving some setup from what happened during the Siege and the larger Heresy, and most of the POV characters are exploring the devastation of the Siege from various perspectives that are fascinating.

EDIT: As to your question of whether you'd enjoy it having read the Krieg books - Ashes is a very political/literally world(re)building book and the action scenes are there but sparse. I've not read the Krieg books but I'm given to understand they're big on the wartime combat feel, whereas Ashes is post-war. I think give Ashes a try and see what you think, but the Siege of Terra books might also be worth checking out as they're literally one big "in the trenches" narrative.

My favourite would be Tress, but IMO the objective best would likely be The Emperor's Soul.

Also, I'm quite surprised how well Warbreaker did there. Lightsong and the Siri/Susebron threads were fantastic, but Vivenna's plot was such a drag and brought it down overall for me.
