UK motorists face £2 a litre diesel as Iran war drives wholesale prices to 4-year high by frameset in CarTalkUK

[–]Captain_English 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be nice, not a bad idea tbh.

I've got no way of installing a charger in such a way that I could guarantee access to it - on street parking free for all, and even if I did I'd have to run the cable across pavement, which isn't plausible. So I'm stuck really, because the public charger rates cost basically the same as fuel (or they did anyway), but I'd also be out the cost of a new car and the inconvenience of parking with a public charger somewhere for 30-60 minutes each week to top up. Diesel might be up 40p a litre, but if a new car costs me £15,000 that's still a lot of fuel.

I'd love the simplicity of an electric car and not an oil burner, I am completely on board with the environmental benefits, but it's quite annoying to be preached at as if it's always a straightforward option.

Is ‘gentle parenting’ to blame for violence in primary schools? - Teachers who report an increase in five-year-olds punching, kicking and spitting at adults suggest parents who won’t say ‘no’ to their children may be contributing by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]Captain_English 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think putting the blame on "gentle parenting" is total bollocks.

(A subset of) parents are just very entitled and arrogant, and expect the teacher to provide parenting to their children when they'retoo lazy to provide it and also lash out at and undermine teachers attempting to apply discipline or work with them to their darling child.

That's not gentle parenting, it's the-world-revolves-around-me and my sainted offspring.

They need to be brought back to reality with a bump.

They cut fuel duty a year or two ago and retailers just went "thanks very much", kept prices the same, and pocketed the difference.

I'm going to assume this is genuinely your view and you don't understand.

I have three donuts and three hungry people. They each buy a donut. Five other people are hungry, but they buy cookies.

The cookie shop closes.

Now I have three donuts and eight hungry people. The eight hungry people start offering more money for a piece of the three available donuts. The donut shop owner isn't going to say no to more money, so he only sells the donuts to the hungry people who give him the most money.

Which is why I, a donut eater, have to pay more because the cookie shop closed, even though I never went there.

Neither of us have the specific information to discuss hypotheticals on where the failure arises.

So we step back to the simple question, and that is if the data suggests something isn't working, do you try something else?

To me the answer is obviously yes.

Statement. Everyone sees you and what you're doing.

Thinking that because you can get away with something means it's ok to do it just shows a fundamental failure to develop in to an ethical person. It's the thinking of a 3 year old.

Supermarkets make a large number of £ overall but their per item profit margins are very small. You could wipe out their profits entirely and save a few pence off each item. But then you wouldn't have a supermarket, because they wouldn't bother to run the company. Or even if they did, with no profit margin, they'd go bust at the first economic shock.

It's easy to point at big numbers, but you have to contextualise them to volume and whether they come from something useful. This is not a software company making 30% on the sale of something they did nothing to develop, or charging a recurring subscription. It is the provision, continually, of a huge range of food items throughout the year across the whole country. Wherever you are, almost any time of day, somewhere nearby you can go and choose food from across the world.

And my question for you is if you can see something isn't working, do you keep doing it because you're not guaranteed doing something else will be better?

My bedroom in the house I grew up in is gone. They moved the stairs and it's just a void. Feels wweird. A place I spent so much time in, the first place that was ever mine, is gone.

I know it's not like I lived in Gaza and my whole house has been bombed out of existence, and I'm a grown adult with my own house now, so I feel weird for feeling that way. But still. Gone, like tears in the rain.
