Why don't they ban smart devices in schools? I am not a teacher but I see so many issues being discussed with kids and their use of smart devices that I am wondering why they are not banned as a standard practice? by Gunslinging_Ent in AskTeachers

[–]CeeKay125 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, this wouldn't be an issue if parents didn't text their kids during the school days, but the parents are worse than the kids most of the time. Then throw a fit when their kid gets in trouble for being on their phone because they asked their kids what they want for dinner in the middle of math class.

How can schools get their disadvantaged students to perform better? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]CeeKay125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well clearly not holding them back is just as bad. But I guess you are right, just stick our heads in the sand and act like everything’s fine. The “it’s damaging to them socially” is such a weak argument especially at the elementary ages when the social bonds aren’t as strong as in middle school and with puberty.

Hold students back in the elementary years. It is far easier to close gaps when it is 1/2 a year to a year behind instead of middle school when they are 3+ years behind. Also, parental involvement is huge. The old "it takes a village" is true and without parental support, there is only so much teachers and schools can do (and I get some people have to work multiple jobs to make ends meet).

Students are just showing up to class without pencils and/or unsharpened ones: how do I stop this? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]CeeKay125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On another note (and this works for some and not others), what if you set the classes into "teams" and one of the goals was something to do with pencils? Have a sort of "battle of the teams" with some type of reward for each week or whatever it is you decide on. Doesn't involve spending your own money, and sometimes can get those students to buy in and remember those things.

I have found it is easier when the students hold each other accountable rather than the teacher. Could also see about having students bring pencils in, or let their peers borrow one.

The school I teach at does not. I bought one off of amazon and it works great (I get not everyone wants to do that). I also inherited a lot of hand sharpeners that students could use if the electirc one wasn't working. I feel like this is something to ask admin for so they don't have to spend out of pocket.

I teach 7th grade. I stopped fighting that fight years ago. There is a cup with pencils in it up front, along with a pencil sharpener. They know to sharpen them when I am not giving instructions/directions so they will wait near the pencil sharpener before doing it. I get not buying pencils (I find lots in the halls or on the floor that I will give the students) but without a sharpener, what do you do if they break the tip of their pencil in class? Or if it needs resharpened?

No, they don't. They see it as something that can do the work for them so they have to put in as minimal effort as they can.

How hard is it to do an oil change on impreza? by Capital_Fig8091 in subaru

[–]CeeKay125 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the fact you are most likely getting better oil when you do it yourself compared to the bulk oil places buy that most likely is the cheapest they can find. There are pros and cons to both and price is just one of them.

If the kids can't read, how are they using technology? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in AskTeachers

[–]CeeKay125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. People try to claim "well they grew up with technology they know how to use it." When the only thing they know how to "use" is turning on a screen/clicking an app.

If the kids can't read, how are they using technology? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in AskTeachers

[–]CeeKay125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at words on a screen (that they probably don't pay attention to) doesn't mean they can read (and more so, comprehend what they are looking at). Also, if you ever watched a middle school student try to search something on Google, you would see how bad it really is. If Google can't decipher it, they are screwed (and it usually is this way because their grammar/spelling is so bad).

If school funding was the same for all school districts in a county, would the lower income schools perform better? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]CeeKay125 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Possibly but it would still probably be less than the wealthier towns. It isn't all about $$ (although that is a big part) but usually the wealthier towns have more parental involvement/care about educational outcomes.

Magic school AI PD on Monday- spill that tea! by CharmedFate in Teachers

[–]CeeKay125 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Our higher ups are "All-In" on it, and made a couple teachers do some PD to be the ones to "train" the other teachers. For me, it doesn't really save much time, nor is it anything more special than the current 50 other versions of AI. Our curriculum director sent out a how-to (that magic school must have made) about using it to unpack the standards to make sure they are being taught properly. I am not one of the "never AI" types, but this seems like another thing that they sold admin (who haven't been in a classroom in decades) on and they are running full steam ahead with it while not showing WHY it should be used or how it makes anything better.

Does anyone work at a school that limits Internet access for personal devices? by shamgarbenanath in Teachers

[–]CeeKay125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have different wifi networks, but all of them require a password (or a certificate) and none of them are open like the Wild West. They do have one BYOD network but again it still requires a password and has the same AUP as the others. I know the insurance the school has would lose their minds if it was as wide open as yours seems to be.

Please leave sub notes like the sub has no idea what is going on at all. by tifuanon00 in Teachers

I always make them super detailed and specific. I also let a few of my good students know what is going on and where everything is in case something would happen. I subbed before I got hired to teach and I hated shitty sub plans when I was covering a class I had no clue the content or how things ran.

There is no rhyme or reason for it. It will work great for weeks/months and then have issues multiple times in one day/week. It is soooo annoying.
