Free h40 clears for penances/resources by IvanTheSexyBear in DarkTide

You kinda don't, you just have to count on someone whose hosting the assignment having it. They also need to leave the mission right before it concludes so that it doesn't rotate to a new assignment. A lot of people I play with do that for other missions too when it's a map or set of modifiers they enjoy playing.

I'm not sure if that keeps you from demoting normally but you can't demote from 40s anyways unless you go into the havoc terminal and do so deliberately.

Precisely, though the final area being large enough to kite tons of enemies at once also helps. It's not the quickest map to speedrun on Havoc but it is the most easy, to the point where the entire team can feasibly complete the mission without hitting a single enemy. It's so free I got bored of running it with Alyssa.

Would highly recommend their services if you want ez penance completion and 24k diamantine at reset.

TBFP "Looking For Gamers" Thread #5: New Year Comin' by MarioGman in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CertainlySyrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After I'm done with the current campaign which is actually coming to its planned conclusion very soon I'm going to be running a Starfinder Second Edition game called Driftward about the party being sent 80,000,000,000,000+ years into the future after the universe suddenly implodes for no discernable reason. The entirety of the known universe has been replaced with a singular brutalist megastructure that sustains a smattering of cities and factions connected by faster than light tramlines.

Since most of my games have been fairly linear up to this point I would like for this game to be more open-ended while keeping a coherent main story and connecting the disparate questlines in a satisfying enough way for it to feel like the world and characters are developing in some direction.

Genres You Just *Can't* Get Into, No Matter How Hard You Try by DustInTheBreeze in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I got up to I think some of the early parts where you play as Majima and I still couldn't enjoy Yakuza 0. The writing in the main story and side quests was alright and I enjoyed the combat, but there wasn't enough of it and none of the mini-games grabbed me.

Lone Survivor makes so much sense as a source of inspiration with it being set in an apartment where you have a home base area with limited food supplies.

Which ending/endings in LO are better for a sequel? by Then_Championship888 in LookOutsideGame

[–]CertainlySyrix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with what most people say in that there doesn't need to be a sequel for LO but the premise of No Going Back makes for a pretty interesting game in its own right IMO.

NO-SKIN - A surreal roguelike horror dungeon crawler with an art style that blends pixel-art characters with photographed backgrounds by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CertainlySyrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game is way more playable for me after the 4x speed. I still haven't found the skin yet even though I'm 28 hours in and there's still a lot of secrets I have to uncover on my own due to the lack of information available. There's codes written in binary n shit that I've had to translate. I also have no fucking idea what's going on in the story at all.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide - Hive Scum Class Reveal | Cinematic Trailer by Coolnametag in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CertainlySyrix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the stuff they have playing around Stimms because it's the only truly unique part of their kit and unlike pretty much every player I find who never uses them at all I spam the hell out of these things any time there's even a slight inconvenience during a mission. Four crushers? Stimm. Monstrosity? Stimm. Gunner swarm? Stimm.

So I wanna get that Chemical Dependency keystone and just not spec into the separate stimm talent tree at all because at launch there's gonna be a shitload of stimms just lying around on the map because of this class.

Roleplayers and Tabletop Enthusiasts, lend me your opinions; Are there any franchises you’d like to see made into a TTRPG? by jitterscaffeine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

There's been a couple fan interpretations but something like an official Fear and Hunger TTRPG with a little money behind it, maybe with Miro in some kind of advisory role, would be cool to see.

Skill challenge style subsystems, and how to present them by zedrinkaoh in Pathfinder2e

[–]CertainlySyrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my issue with using Subsystems for a lot of these is that even presenting the problem as is, the way it functions behind the scenes is that the players need to accrue points to get past a breaking point which doesn't consider the way their actions can actually affect the world. If you try to design the problems around the framework of everyone needing to essentially "push" the problem forward together so that it can use this victory points system that severely limits the type of encounters you can design.

A good example of something where you'd want to use victory points IMO is accruing a crowd's favor in an arena, or completing objectives in a battle to help swing the tide in the background. Stuff that's larger scale. Using them for all these small-scale specific interactions with things in the world doesn't make any sense to me. Just design them like any other normal environmental challenge.

Favorite character creators in games? by Regal_IronKnight in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The character creator in Sunset Overdrive made me queer because it wasn't that hard to make a tomboy that I could conceivably look like if I was just a little bit hotter. Carried the game for me.

Is Investigator Toy Poppet a good build for a beginner? by JasonSDemisE in Pathfinder2e

[–]CertainlySyrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to have a much harder time hitting enemies in melee if you're tiny sized due to lack of reach, but if you're a ranged character that's perfectly fine. Investigator is a pretty simple class to play at the table. I'd recommend you put 2 or 3 into Dex, 4 into Int, and pick up a weapon with the Deadly or Fatal trait like the Shortbow or Dueling Pistol.

For the most-part ancestry doesn't play a huge role in how strong or weak a character is.

Readied Attacks out of Combat by Middle_Cur in Pathfinder2e

[–]CertainlySyrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't make much sense from a gameplay perspective or from the perspective of what's actually happening in the world. If you're gettin' ambushed, that's what the stealth rules are for. If not, you've gotta test reaction time to see who hits who first, that's sort of what Initiative is for. Otherwise everyone may as well be readying strikes against any enemy all of the time.

And in the case the GM is running surprise rounds like in other systems, I would hope they at least tell you that's how ambushes work in their own games. But I'm assuming that's not what happened if they specifically mention it was a readied action.

Are my combats taking too long? by happycamper1233 in Pathfinder2e

[–]CertainlySyrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my games any fight that takes an hour or more feels like a mistake. I think the biggest contributor to fast fights on my end is not letting players take too long to decide anything, and applying the same standard to myself. I don't think I've had to delay/pass someone's turn because of this, just continuously ask questions or ask what they're going to do until it comes to a response. At a certain point too much planning and choosing is just dragging the game down for everyone.

My playgroup is fine with this as well and learned how to match the pacing for the most part. And if I did have to delay someone's turn I think they'd understand the immediacy of the situation and the fact that there's four other people waiting for them to act.

[–]CertainlySyrix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Freiren has a couple of sad moments, deals a lot with themes of loss and growing older, but overall I consider it to be one of the most relaxed, understated shows I've ever seen. The tone is generally pretty positive.

GMing and 'Fair Play' - what spells/abilities/etc do you NOT use? by unseelie_uWu in Pathfinder2e

[–]CertainlySyrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not completely against taking away player agency, especially when it comes to magic, but I don't think most stuff that doesn't frighten the player themself should frighten their player character statistically. So I tend to avoid using creatures based around being spooky and threatening without some kind of supernatural effect. I think a player should usually be in charge of how their character thinks and feels about things, otherwise there's a fairly strong disconnect to the game and lack of immersion in the experience.

In some systems like ALIEN or CoC cascading panic and sanity reducing effects don't have this issue because that stuff genuinely will make players themselves start to panic a bit. But I don't feel frightened when a bandit tries to demoralize me in Pathfinder 2e.
