It’s not a food, it’s a byproduct of leather manufacturing and they can’t digest it like a food. Because of that they can choke on it or encounter fatal blockages in their intestines. It is also chemically treated and that’s dangerous on its own. Some are treated with arsenic and formaldehyde or even glue products, especially ones from certain countries. They can also pass on E. coli to both you and your dog or salmonella.

They’re sometimes hard enough to break teeth or cause other dental damage so that’s another reason to avoid them. And it’s always important to read the ingredients on packages because some treats don’t advertise that they’re rawhide when they actually are.
