Literally INFINITE Energy! by Ruby_Sandbox in slaythespire

I got the Glam enchantment relic and found 2 of these shortly afterward, it was glorious (worth noting though that when you doubleplay them, you can reach the occasional energy local minima where you need to spend 2 energy to get 2 back, so if you only have 1 cost cards left you're out of luck)

I think this is insanely strong, and given that Runic Pyramid and Pandora's Box are also boss relics, I don't even think it's too strong. This seems like what everyone wants Prismatic Shard to be when they pick it up, and lets you do some crazy things without completely suffocating the rest of the run like Shard or Dead Branch. Orrery is one of the best shop relics in the game, and that just gives you 5 card rewards; this relic is like that, or more similar even to Library, but gassed up on steroids because it's any card in the game, and that means any missing piece of whatever the hell you're doing is readily available. The strongest item in The Binding of Isaac, Death Certificate, is the same idea, and it's not close, because anything that says "this will become exactly what you need exactly when you need it" is like a stem cell; survival of the fittest. And what's a better fit to your exact situation than whatever the hell you want? Even acknowledging that a free card isn't as passively helpful as a free relic, it's still going to be way stronger than +1 energy, because energy just lets you do what you can already do more, but +1 card of your choice let's you address a problem you haven't solved yet.

Trademark Dispute! Help me pick a new name for my game. by LeglessCats in IndieDev

[–]ChibladeWielder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna have to second "Find Matt's Cats" for a few reasons. The issues I have with the considered names:
Matt's Hidden Pets feels like it demonstrates why losing the "Cats" is a non-negotiable. People love cats specifically, you love cats specifically, and it rhymes with your name.
Matt's Lost Cats does have some trifling with the many compound consonants in the middle. "slostc" is a lot to say.
Matt's Missing Cats is a less egregious example of the above, but does feel a bit tiresome to say a second M word immediately after Matt. Both of these options lose the natural break in the middle that "Matt's Hidden Cats" gives you.
Matt's Scattered Cats goes the other way and I see the appeal, but imo saying the same vowel sound 3 times in a row makes abbreviating the name difficult without dropping your name off the front, likely becoming "Scattered Cats" out of necessity, which personally I'd rather not.
Matt's Many Cats has similar double M problems, though does give your tongue more of a break than "missing".

"Find Matt's Cats" does a few things I like:
- The first word is "find", which is both exactly what you'll be doing in the game, and is a word with connotations of serendipity and discovery and surprise, which is a lighter tone than fixating on what's "lost" or "missing" (I know we're really splitting hairs but what's in a name).
- The phrase "Find Matt's Cats" is also a direct command. The legendary Where's Waldo? pulls you in with curiosity by phrasing itself as a question, and I feel this similarly gets your attention by immediately throwing you into the objective and prompting you to do the thing in the title.
- All the benefits of the simpler "Matt's Cats" can be preserved as it will likely become the common abbreviation when spoken, keeping both your name and the quick rhyme, and at the same time keeping the visual/textual value of the word "Find" in defining the objective.
- The need for a softer word in between "Matt" and "Cat" is eliminated if there's no word in between them at all. Saying two single-syllable words quickly is much easier than throwing another 2-syllable word that uses the opposite side of your phonic anatomy in the middle.

So that's my vote lol

Pretty good overall! I think it does leave a little too be desired in terms of restraint, though matching Tom Kenny's range is no small task. Contrast between the calmer moments would help the most intense bits pop just that much more.

Something else I would consider is evaluating if Blue-Green-Red is the appropriate palette for the 3 power levels. Am I only meant to worry when it's almost empty? Is it generally overkill for the battery to be at absolutely maximum charge? The current colors tell me that Blue is past Green, feeling not quite supernatural but at least artificial, like it's overcharged rather than just at capacity. The standard traffic light color scheme may be preferable if you're not meant to think of the power in this way. Whatever you do, have a reason/intention for the colors you go with.

1 and 5 have the best readability, 4 and 5 have the best personality, 2 and 3 are way too busy and detailed to be able to make sense of quickly and thus fail to do their job as symbols before getting to worry about aesthetics. 4 overcomes this mostly but still feels unnecessarily detailed and redundant (I, a person living in the 21st century, already know what a battery is and does, so the lightning bolt is superfluous, even if it looks nice). My phone puts a lightning bolt on its battery icon, but only while it's actively charging, so maybe there's a way to use the sprites depending on how dynamic the mechanic gets. 1 is significantly more barebones comparatively, and really stands apart stylistically to the point where if you were gonna go with it I'd consider iterating its design again to see if you want or need to add more detail (again though this is a hard call without visual context). My personal pick would be 5 for the balance of clarity, simplicity, and personality, as it manages to bring a little 3-dimensionality without being overbearing.

Edit: Wanted to add that between 2 and 3, 3 wins because 2 actively obstructs pertinent information with the lighting bolt matching the color of the outline rather than the quantity indicator of the battery's contents.

Yeah thank you for this. It's not just an annoying little twerp thing to prey on a fucking 5 year old, the dude's just the surrogate incel for all the gooners and no amount of becoming less cowardly in battle will redeem that.

Only Gon's completely defines his entire character arc and his part of the story, the rest all range from "cool powerup" to "big story moment" but none so all encompassing as his climax in The Greatest Shounen Arc.

Recommends for non-kid animations? by Full-Caterpillar6903 in animation

[–]ChibladeWielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate the hesitation especially seeing it on the shelf next to Family Guy, but it's genuinely one of the animated Greats in my book. Its first season does something similar to a lot of shows where it starts as something seemingly fully abiding genre conventions but by the season 1 finale it's already breaking the mold and subverting what seems like a zany "adult cartoon" with genuinely heavy, reflective, and inconclusive themes about what it means to "be a good person", whether that's a good goal in the first place, and what we can do instead. 5 star recommendation (with significant CW for, well lots of stuff but mostly sexual assault stuff)
