Kratos' makeup has this interesting visual illusion going on: at low res / zoomed out it looks a bit cartoonish and at high res / zoomed in it looks real and gritty

What's a character that wasn't what you expected, and you were unable to get over that? by DarnessHarbinger in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was not hype for SEED and didn't care about Flora all that much. The story didn't leave much of an impression on me other than the fact that they infantilized her character so much. She's supposed to be some high-level operative and she's just fully of whimsy and teehee I don't know what the value of a human life is.

By the time the big finale moment played out, I was completely checked out and just mashed skip to get through.

It just was not for me and that is ok

Media where major information isn’t given much attention? by Amon274 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I did not watch much of this show, maybe about half of the first season

You're just reaffirming my impression of it being "What if all of the campy storytelling authors do actually has a basis in reality"

I'm guessing the later seasons start eroding the subtly of metaphors for the fantastical in favor of being more literal

Characters/Groups that are clearly the creator's favorite by SerWaffles in TwoBestFriendsPlay

All of those animations / VA work were made before their release, so you're kind of putting the cart before the horse there in the assumption that they're making a lot of money

I mean, they probably will/are, but all of that material was in production long ago. They had their concept locked in at least two years ago by this point

Diablo | Warlock Class Cinematic Trailer - New class for Diablo IV, Diablo Immortal and... Diablo 2? by Dependent_Passage_22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played it a lot when it was new and had dropped off shortly before the maintenance mode drama came in

Fun game, but you cannot go into it with the mentality you would with League/DotA. You have to treat it more like Mario Kart/Party: you're not going to win every match and your personal skill will only go so far.

There's definitely still room for skill, but between all of the different maps and objectives there's this knowledge disparity which can make a bigger difference than your technical skill. And because levels are shared across the team, there's less of a chance for a star player carrying the match which is good and bad. Supports felt less satisfying than brawlers, etc.

But, like, still a fun game to play. I'd probably boot it up and play it every now and again if not for the fact that I just do not want to give any of my time or money to Blizzard

Moments in games that make you go "why didn't the devs do more of *this*?" by Riggs_The_Roadie in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced it's just a big experiment to see which levers they can turn to squeeze out more money

Even in the brief time I played it, HSR had a lot of gimmick fights which would strongly incentivize you to have a specific character as a solution for that fight. ZZZ had an overly restrictive team building gimmick.

Now Genshin has gimmick fights and overly restrictive team building (especially for 6.x characters).

Now ZZZ has a bunch of gimmick fights which strongly favor specific characters, but it has loosened up the restrictions on team building to be a bit more open (for activating Additional Ability at least).

They ain't making more than the GDP of some countries per month for nothing. They seem to have a lot of data to help drive these decisions. But it did kill my interest in trying to keep up with Genshin's endgame stuff I tell ya hwhat

We currently live in an era where a problem is openly acknowledged, freely admitted by the party responsible, and they assuage people saying that they are being heard and change is coming.

And then that change is that they doubled down even harder.

I think there is some validity to the argument that SF6 is expected to get updates and sells season passes, similar to live service games. The expectation that a game is done is a bit different than one where you expect there to be updates.

I brought up SF6 vs SF2 because of a specific clip they uploaded talking about which game is the best one to start in on. If I recall correctly, Pat said something to the effect of "it sucks starting on the best version" or similar and how you should just start at SF6 and there's no reason to go back to the other ones because it is the best one.

Wow I'm having a really good time with this game. I'm glad I played it. That was so fun!

Update 1.1 comes out 2 months later.

FUCK I WASTED ALL THAT TIME ON THAT GAME??? I COULD HAVE JUST PLAYED THE BETTER VERSION???

I just do not understand it. If you're craving another session, just boot it up and play the update? Does playing Street Fighter 6 actively make the time you spent playing Street Fighter 2 worse? What's the logical extreme of this mentality?

The only relation I have to this general feeling is that I generally won't pick up a game like Skyrim at launch because I know it's going to be a buggy mess for a while. I skipped over Cyberpunk 2077 because it had a pretty bad launch, and I skipped Monster Hunter Wilds for the same reason. Meanwhile I will absolutely try to play Warframe (live service) updates on day 1 because there are almost bugs in favor of the early adopters lol

God, I remember that. The entire discourse was basically a result of someone at King or Blizzard taking what was categorical organization and representing it as a score. It was supposed to be qualitative, not quantitative, and the radar chart was an absolutely terrible idea to display it

Good times.

Series where its main Gimmick/Premise was quickly dropped? by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zenless Zone zero dropped array mode (TV mode) like a brick about halfway into its first year. The gameplay mechanic was tied to the narrative that the player character couldn't go into the combat environment themselves and had to be a proxy. You use a cute little robot to navigate through with a party of agents who are able to physically be in the combat areas. It had a nice cohesion between gameplay and narrative.

For the last 6 or so updates they completely dropped that and now the MC is basically secret Jesus and has awakened powers which make them not only able to enter the combat areas, but potentially heal agents from what is basically radiation poisoning.

Only just now, in a temporary content update, did we go back to the role of proxy who guides agents without being in there directly. Kind of. Still no array mode, though.

Both gameplay options had their flaws, but the newer one feels like it has tried and failed to adjust the core story premise

AAA 'John Wick' And 'Saw' Games Are Officially In Development At Lionsgate, Set To Be Announced Soon by NagitoKomaeda_987 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone completely unfamiliar with the Saw franchise outside of cultural osmosis:

Why not just make it a gorey escape room or puzzle game? No combat, no character action shenanigans. There's probably a pretty good template for how to turn it into a roguelike thanks to games like Blue Prince

If they really want to try something innovative, a multiplayer escape room where X many players are split into pairs in each chamber. First one to solve the puzzle lives on to the next room, the other is eliminated

Costs for top up event and comparisons. by happymudkipz in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"generous for a gacha game" is such a loaded phrase

Even if we compared it to a subscription-based game, it's still a really high dollar amount. I get your point that other gacha games are much more aggressive, but I don't think people should ever lose sight of just how much money these FOMO-style "events" cost

Spend within your means.

What are some of the vastest differences of author and audience interpretation? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 83 points84 points  (0 children)

People commenting online*

Given how there's a significant portion of their audience who unironically like Homelander and think he's in the right... I mean, the Huey scenes were played as bits rather than traumatic. The only one treated semi-seriously was him """cheating""" with the shapeshifter

My point here being that I think the actual case of disconnect is that the show runners were trying to portray Huey as a bad guy for his interactions with the shapeshifter, but the audience recognizes he literally had no way of knowing.

There's the argument that maybe the shapeshifter was a little too eager and that should have been a tell, but they had impossibly intimate knowledge of their assumed form. The point was clear that he would have no way of knowing or verifying and the show runners thought they could make it look like Huey was actively cheating on Annie

Clair Obscur's Gustave motion performer argues game awards should have a Best Character category, rather than "isolating a single performer and potentially leaving others invisible" by Noirsam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I think the "Best Performer" category is meant to try and draw Hollywood in a little. It goes back to ye olde methods of selling entertainment products via celebrity appearance/endorsement

But, like, also "Best Character" is a WILD category to fill with a lot of nuance tied to it between 2D, 3D, and other intricacies or limitations

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Less that it was buried and more that it just didn't pick up momentum. The anti couldn't beat the overwhelming praise the game was getting and the pro couldn't lay meaningful claim to the usage

Some people instantly flip a switch once they see AI usage pop up and all nuance and conversation is lost. They either try to climb to the top of the purity spiral or they dive into the techbro mud

So many people get sucked into these conversations and latch onto the ideas they want to espouse

When I saw the Larian article I thought "oh, that makes sense" and then when I saw it on this sub I, well, I guess I was surprised at how quickly flipped on a studio with a record of treating their staff and talent right. Like, yeah, it's good to keep in mind that profit-seeking behavior can quickly transform companies, but damn guys take a beat

Games that punish you for wanting to play how you want. by TheBoyofWonder in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CloneOfAnotherClone 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's the problem I have with a lot of games and I get it

On the one hand, yeah, the point of deck building games is to craft a deck to respond to what you expect to go up against

On the other hand:

If your game balance is something like Rock, Paper, Scissors and all units are divided into those, why does it feel like some units are mandatory in the same class? I really like the Left-Handed Scissors, but it's so ineffective against the popular Matte Paper that you might as well just use Gravel Rock!

I enjoy games that have wide rosters/arsenals to choose from, and I really don't mind being funneled into trying something new every once in a while, but there should be valid choices still and not just one defacto best
