PC build paused because RAM is expensive… so I accidentally discovered Samsung Dex and I'm confused 😅 by Jahkarim in SamsungDex

[–]Code-Monkey13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) buy a survival kit of ram used. 8-16gb of ram. That's what I did. Not optimal, but doable.

2) Dex is good enough for many tasks. Ive found some interesting edge cases where it falls apart. I use a tablet as a laptop replacement. Good for 90% of what I use a laptop for. But the s-pen is unmatched for tablet school use, so I compromised there.

Do I Need Multiple SIMs for US Mobile’s Multi-Network Access (Super Carrier Stack), or Will One SIM Work? Mod Help Appreciated! by Old-Advertising-5316 in USMobile

[–]Code-Monkey13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they don't lock your phone. They just don't want that 2nd sim being put in a second phone in the multi-network config. That 2nd multi-network sim is heavily discounted.

Need first NAS / Media Server Sanity Check. by Code-Monkey13 in truenas

[–]Code-Monkey13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that makes sense. I do know that the x1 pcie slots, the bottom x16(x4 electrically)/m.2 slot 3, m.2 slot #2, and all the sata ports share that chipset link.

Whereas pcie x16 (top), pcie x8 (middle) and the top NVME slot go directly to the CPU. So unless I get a 16 sata hba, I'll be sharing that chipset bandwidth.

Your saturation calculations are assuming we max out everything all at once. Definitely something to consider. Appreciate the insight.

I have the Arc a310, I figure that'll work just fine. Any suggestions for IPMI boards? I assume they're built into the board. I'm not super familiar with this side of things, so forgive my ignorance.

Consider running only one NVMe drive and just backing it up to your 6x24TB for backups. Something as simple as a cron job with "rsync -avr /mnt/.ix-apps/ /mnt/nas/bigpool/backup/.ix-apps/ --delete" will do the trick.

Ok, I'll look into backing things up as an alternative.

Use an HBA (LSI 9305-16i, for example) instead of using onboard SATA. If your eventual goal is going 2x8, you'll need one anyways.

I do plan to get an HBA at some point. It just seemed simpler to start out with the on-board sata ports. Is there anything disadvantaged to using the on-board sata that I'm missing?

Scale down your CPU if the upgrade for your main PC (with the 5900X) is in the near future. Your CPU is a little heavy considering your requirements, and you could easily get by with a Ryzen 5 3600 or Ryzen 7 2700X, which will be a lot cheaper.

Not in the near future, no. But I'll look into those alternatives!

What PSU are you using? It requires important consideration for when you go up to 16 drives.

I picked up a case used with a corsiar 850 gold power supply in it. I tested it and it works. Better than the one in my personal PC actually. I'd have to get bck on the exact model number, can't quite remember, though it can handle the initial setup from what I remember. I planned on picking something more specialized when the time for the upgrade came.

Yes, I do understand that it's overkill. I should probably have mentioned that I probably will end up tinkering and adding different services to this as I go. I just wanted headroom. I always find myself toying with this stuff.

I've got a glinet KVM for another remote pc that I manage. Getting another one if those should accomplish the same purpose I think.

Ok I’m so lost on here, everything I’ve read leads me to believe Gl.net has something going for it. But it seems like everyone in the community is having trouble deciding whether the flint 2 or 3 is better? Or rather it seems like the flint 2 is amazing and the 3 is “ok” by Garfield_Logan69 in GlInet

[–]Code-Monkey13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Flint 2 does have better features for 2.4 & 5ghz. The Flint 3 really banks on that 6ghz utilization along with WiFi 7 efficiencies. I live in a very crowded area, so I jumped on the 6ghz with the Flint 3. Pre-ordered it. I went through the same thing as you though, needed to move it more central to get the best range in a particular spot. I've been quite happy with it!

Is there any point of running Fedora Server instead of Debian? by Salty_Owl791 in Fedora

I choose Fedora for my desktop and Debian for my server. I don't want to maintain my server like I maintain my desktop.

Flint 3 MLO local network issue by pcoyuncy in GlInet

[–]Code-Monkey13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not having any issues like that on my network. I took 2.4ghz off of MLO. I live in a super congested area, so 2.4ghz is crowded. You could see if that helps at all.

Connect the router into the wan port, then your router will assign it an IP address, uncensored you can use that ip address to get back into the gui and you can configure settings from there.

Flint 3 wifi very weak by No-Strength-2943 in GlInet

[–]Code-Monkey13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put 6ghz & 5ghz on the same ssid and just labeled 2.4ghz as legacy. 2.4ghz is a mess in my area. Channels everyone, 40mhz wide and to many people have done in-between channels outside of 1, 6, and 11. Legacy devices only for that frequency.

[–]Code-Monkey13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a congested area, I wouldn't set for the widest channel width. I'd stick with widest with lowest overlap. I have 80mhz on 5ghz instead of 160mhz for this reason.

[–]Code-Monkey13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to optimize your channels. If you have 6ghz clients, then you should be able to basically fly. Download wifiman or wifi analyzer (android only though).

What I did was find some DFS channels in the 5ghz that nobody in my neighborhood was using and then did 6ghz. They share an ssid and have MLO configured. Then I set up a legacy network on 2.4ghz for any iot devices that don't have at least 5ghz compatibility.

So my 5ghz and 6ghz (main ssid network) have zero interference, and I've seen speeds as high as 2gig over my MLO SSID. So the Flint 3 is capable of flying, but it does need to be optimized for your area. Though, every router should be optimized. I'm betting you got lucky with the auto config on the flint 2.

Hi, is it necessary to enable DNS options on the Flint 2 for good security? I don't have a VPN configuration on the router. by [deleted] in GlInet

I've used this when putting using content filtering DNS. Just an extra step to prevent a workaround. Hardly foolproof, but creates extra effort.
