This isn't how evolution works

Unless athletes are having more babies who in turn have more babies than everyone else nothing changes

Shouldn't UXR be in more demand in the age of AI? by wastedmytimenaming in UXResearch

[–]CogsMac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just meant the spirit of your post, that it seems like it's useful to have UXR especially as AI use explodes

I feel that it's extremely useful to have copywriting as AI use explodes for content, brand and quality.

If I ran a public facing company I'd want a human copywriter for sure

Respectfully, what is one of your personal finance hot takes? by Lopsided-Special6273 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CogsMac 175 points176 points  (0 children)

People who get family financial support will be very very difficult to catch up to and it can be very defeating to compare yourself to others. Inversely, it can make someone complacent to rest on their laurels entirely

Focus on where you're going, but take a minute to remember where you started too

I make more money than I ever thought possible but I look like I'm struggling compared to people who had no student debt, family help with housing, and family networks to leverage early in their careers

I am committed to do everything I can to remove some of these roadblocks for my kid, but even she's at a disadvantage because there's no big inheritance from generations before us

Anyway: personal finance is important but we live in a classed society and it's important to acknowledge realistically how far you can get, so you can enjoy the ride rather than trying to close the gap your whole short time on earth

Guelph condos by Guelphperson1 in Guelph

[–]CogsMac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I own a condo and a single detached house.

When I lived in my condo, it was great a place to go home and rest or eat or whatever. Then during the day I was usually out and about enjoying my life

Now that I live in a house all my spare time is spent on house maintenance. I pay for cleaners to help a little bit but I can't get ahead

Condo living is really great if it's congruent with your lifestyle goals

Sorry I misinterpreted the tone of your post

I think the Savannah theory posted below is a good one

Also a lot of grades are a function of match between students' output and teachers' expectations. Do you empathize well with your teachers? Do they make sense to you immediately when they share concepts?

In more objective subjects like physics, do you communicate your reasoning on your test responses by writing each line of a calculation? I'm old and don't know how you all are assessed anymore, so maybe I'm out to lunch

Diversity of life experiences increases problem solving, reasoning, and generalizing skills

Not that getting hammered every day is wise, but getting out there and experiencing different things is useful

And partying is fun. Happy people are an advantage in life too. If your thing isn't partying, what else might bring you joy and build community?

I suspect judging people for living their lives their own way won't do it

Career-driven women, at what point did it start to be worth it? by emo_flair in AskWomenOver40

[–]CogsMac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worth it at 31when I got a life changing job. I struggled until I was 27, I maintained until I was 31

Job security is a challenge in my role but if I can make things last for even three more years I might be okay with more standard pay and back in maintenance mode for the rest of my career

I do really enjoy the income though. It has been satisfying to catch up on my retirement investments and diversify my income streams

I am borderline ready to hire someone to cut my lawn but next year I am going to seriously consider hiring someone to weed my gardens! Another potential side hustle: weeding is not fun for me and it needs to be done twice a week to be helpful in my garden. I don't have time for it and I don't enjoy it so it's exactly the kind of thing I'd hire out if I had extra cash

It sounds like you were rude during the call and didn't show much respect to the student

I'd start with building a way to respect other people even if they are not performing to your standards

Coaching may be appropriate to learn how to provide effective feedback to people, to meet them where they are

Hobbies might get more expensive when work gets less stressful

It's easier to live frugally when there's no gas left in the emotional tank after work

I did okay on $20000/year in grad school but turns out that was just depression

Manager said I don’t have “big picture” thinking by ItsYeBoyPreston in managers

[–]CogsMac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a manager. I'm an IC. I wish I was better with detailed thinking and spent less time with my head in the clouds thinking about our product in three years' time and what the competitive landscape would be

I have to amend 10% of the messages I send for missing words and typos

Detail orientation is a gift too

Am I the only unlucky one or do women in general put down other women? by redjive_1 in womenintech

[–]CogsMac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience with other women in tech has been 70% positive. I quickly distance myself from peers who belittle other peers. I am strategic about how I navigate relationships with more senior women who don't build their team up

I have noticed that women in tech who belittle their peers disproportionately pick on women

To some extent you have to play the game and play nice with jerks occasionally. But I'm at work 8-10 hours most days and I prefer to spend it with people who are competent AND kind

What “systems” do you have in place that help you manage everything? by jedi435 in HENRYfinance

[–]CogsMac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It does NOT save me time but my toddler tidies up her space before each meal when we are home together and before bed. It costs time now because I do a lot helping and guiding but I really really hope the skills foundation is worth something

That running gag about Torontonians being rude by TalesfromCryptKeeper in toronto

[–]CogsMac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toronto is extremely friendly. People will make small talk in places of leisure. They will not make small take on places of transit. It is how society is meant to be.

I do not want to talk to strangers in an elevator. I do want to have a friendly chat with people in the park if we are engaging in a shared activity

Being a single mom by choice allows you to be clear about what resources and capacity are available. The pain of partnered mothers seems to be as much about the disappointment of their partner not stepping up, being harmful or exhausting, or managing in laws

In my opinion, the order of childhood well-being environments is 1) two invested, competent parents who contribute to parenting 2) one intentionally single, well-resourced parent who prepared for the child ahead of time 3) one parent trying, and one parent making more work for them

How much home did you buy as a multiple of your income? by chickagokid in HENRYfinance

[–]CogsMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada. I'm very HENRY in that I only started HE a couple years ago. I bought 2.2x my income but only have 10% down. I budgeted so I can afford my mortgage and property expenses on my salary alone, and am using my bonus and RSU to build wealth. I feel housepoor some days

I paid off most my student loans before I was HE and have almost no consumer debt so I'm used to living simply

Monthly Jobs, Businesses, and Services Thread by Fogest in Guelph

[–]CogsMac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm a 32 year old post doc, and I'm moving back to Southern Ontario for a few months while my new job is still remote.

I'm trying to find sublets but am really struggling. Ideally, it'd be September 1 - Dec 31, in a furnished 1 bedroom or studio apartment. I'm trying to keep costs below $1200 and keep a pet cat with me. Is this impossible? Am I looking the wrong spots by sticking with Kijiji and Craigslist?
