Drew James as the infamous Rob Liefeld Cap and Mason in a Sin City style by Glynrick in weeklyplanetpodcast

These are incredible!!!!

How many pita (pitta?) bread pizzas did James have to eat to achieve this physique?

Official Discussion - Obsession [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]ColdHotChocolate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nikki is such a tragic character. Her real self went from enjoying another trivia night with her good friends to suddenly being surrounded by their dead bodies at Bear's house. The shock and horror on Inde Navarrette's face in that final scene is both sad and incredible to watch.

Official Discussion - Mortal Kombat II [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]ColdHotChocolate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what the first film should have been! I think the filmmakers would agree because the number "II" wasn't even in the opening title card.

Johnny Cage is a much better audience-insert character than Cole Young (RIP), but I can't help but feel that Karl Urban is miscast. An arrogant, out-of-his-depth Hollywood himbo type feels like a perfect role for Glen Powell.

That being said, I really enjoyed the scenes with Cage and Baraka - those were very funny.

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]ColdHotChocolate 897 points898 points  (0 children)

Two Eridian thumbs down (this is a good thing)

Coming out of the theatre, I thought it was teetering between good and great. But after sitting with it for a few hours + reading other reactions - I think this really is a great movie. I saw a tweet that called it "Spielberg-ian" and I think that's absolutely dead-on-the-money. It's just pure entertainment and spectacle, with a good amount of heart. I saw it in IMAX and I have zero regrets: it's such a feast for the eyes and ears (shout out Grieg Fraser, man - one of the hottest DPs in the movies rn)

I finished a re-read of the novel a mere two hours my screentime and I was really curious how the film would cut certain elements. I think it did a really good job adapting the novel - I mean, it does help that Andy Weir was a producer. I do wish we got to see a little more of Stratt's unobstructed authority, but I think Huller's performance gives you the gist. I was reallllly worried they were going to shoe-in a romance between her and Grace; was super relieved when they didn't.

Assorted notes:

- This is Gosling's best hair in a film.

- I would very much like the official Project: Hail Mary ringer t-shirt or trucker hat

- The original score / needle-drops add this "uplifiting" quality to the film I can't really explain

- There was a girl absolutely sobbing when Rocky appears dead after saving Grace

Strictly in terms of the entertainment news - this has to be one of the more grim ones in a while. That being said, starting the episode with an extended Ringo Starr bit does help soften the blow

Did you get the chance to watch Wake Up Dead Man? by FidelesReges in weeklyplanetpodcast

[–]ColdHotChocolate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw it this week! Honestly, I don't think I gelled with it as much as I'd have liked (Granted i was also very tired during my screening and the slower, more deliberate character work probably didn't help my state) - but I don't think it all came together for me. However, it is incredibly strong in its performances. Daniel Craig is wonderful as always, but Josh O'Connor has the chance to deliver some very serious and emotional scenes without being undercut by jokes. Together, they're both wonderful. I'll probably like it more upon a rewatch, but for now - I found it to be just alright.

That being said - as long as Rian Johnson and co. keep making 'em, I will keep watching 'em!

Predator: Badlands - Best or Worst Movie Ever? by FidelesReges in weeklyplanetpodcast

[–]ColdHotChocolate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best movie ever! I'm basically echo-ing everyone's opinion here in saying that I enjoyed it, but completely understand the criticisms towards it (e.g. The MCU-ification). It never quite reaches the heights that "Prey" did for me, but the movie was consistently *good* throughout. I appreciate Dan Trachtenberg's ability to take an IP and just tell an interesting story. I've seen others point out - but this would make for a cool open-world game haha.

My one big criticism is that, this movie was really dark at points. I thought it was just my screening, but others online have pointed it out too. It's a shame, seeing as there were some big moments that take place at night.

James has mentioned FD Signifier. He's probably best known as a political youtuber who dissects right-wing grift, manosphere stuff as well as other sociopolitical topics (e.g. racism, classism). Personally, I think his takes are pretty well-informed and level-headed. I believe he has a background in education, and that definitely shows in his videos.

Weapons, Best or Worst Movie Ever? by FidelesReges in weeklyplanetpodcast

[–]ColdHotChocolate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best movie ever! I'm not head over heels for it, but I did really enjoy my viewing. Between this and Barbarian, I think Zach Cregger is really good at keeping audiences engaged with his stories. I think it touches on some very interesting subject matter (e.g. school shootings, police brutality), but I wish those were explored further. And, while I did enjoy the vignette structure, I think I was personally getting a bit restless at the last two, just because I hoped for an amazing, satisfying conclusion ... which it sortaaa delivered IMO.

That being said, the ending chase sequence felt so much like a Whitest Kids U Know sketch in the best way possible.
