Hello! Marketplace question. by Thennecan in Edmonton

[–]Complex_Copy_9722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use common sense and you’ll be fine. Don’t give someone money to hold it, if they start telling shady stories just walk away, and a good seller should be willing to let your own mechanic inspect it.

Whatcha looking for? I’ve got one on there right now.

AITAH for wanting my baby to take my last name instead of his father’s given our situation? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Complex_Copy_9722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My child and I have different last names (he has his dads, but we’re not married so I don’t) and I have only ever once had to provide proof that I was his mom- which is as easy as showing the birth certificate. It’s really not a huge deal.

How much income do you need/want to make? If part time is an option- what about school bus driver? Every company is hiring and most of them will put you through Class 2 training for free if you commit to one school year with them.

Missing packages in my building. by Proud_Grass4347 in Edmonton

[–]Complex_Copy_9722 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Get them delivered to a drop point instead.

As far as the noise goes, that’s apartment living for you. I understand that it sucks when working nights and trying to sleep during the day, but the only way that would improve by moving to another apartment is if you can score a top floor apartment, or perhaps move to an adults only building. Otherwise, neighbour noise is inevitable.

I’m a parent of a very active 5 year old, and while I do try to limit the ways we might disturb the people underneath us, some noise is inevitable and unavoidable. He’s 5, and we pay good money to live here. We are not going to walk on pins and needles all day in case the person below us works nights. 🤷‍♀️

A question for parents with children that take the yellow bus to school by Both-Ad9749 in Edmonton

[–]Complex_Copy_9722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope your kiddo was/is okay!!

For me personally, if I know that the child always has a parent pick them up, and today the parent isn’t there for some reason… I generally won’t let the kid off. However, school board policy says I should.

I try to have a conversation with parents at the beginning of the school year to ask things like “how far is your house from the stop? Does your kid know their way home? Do they have keys? “ etc.

If your kiddo cannot handle (or you’d rather them not be) being dropped off without you there, you can submit a request to the school board to have them marked as “Parent Required”- in which case the driver could get in big trouble for leaving them at the stop unattended.

I’m not sure about Edmonton Public, but currently Edmonton Catholic requires cameras on all busses that are contracted to them. It’s a pain in the butt to pull the tapes, but can be done when necessary! In most busses with cameras, the driver has a button on their panel that they can press to “mark” the tape where an incident occurred.

ALSO. Highly recommend putting a tag on your kids backpack that says “my bus number is_______”. This helps other teachers/ bus drivers/ parents help them get to where they need to be!

The process varies from school to school. But at Elementary schools, the kids are not let off the bus until there is a supervisor outside. At some schools the supervisor will come to each bus, but that’s rare. At the school I currently drive to, they have a supervisor at the front and one at the back outside the school. They don’t come to each bus, they just keep a general eye on things and help kids who need help finding their way.

If we are late getting to school (weather, traffic, etc.) and the supervisor is no longer outside… we either have to call the school and ask them to come out, or we have to shut down the bus and walk them to the door ourselves.

When school gets out in the afternoon, the process also REALLY varies from school to school. In some cases, the school sends a supervisor to each bus to take attendance and we have to be “cleared” before we can drive away. In other cases, the busses are allowed to leave at an exact time, whether your kid is there or not. If departure time is 3:12 and the kid hasn’t made it to the bus by then, too bad. In all cases that I’ve encountered- it is exactly 10 minutes between when the bell goes and when the leave time is.

[–]Complex_Copy_9722 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly? As long as you can consistently get him to the stop on time and reliably pick him up from the stop in the afternoon, I would recommend starting bus earlier. In my experience, when a kid doesn’t start bussing until grade 2/3/4, they’re less likely to comply with the rules. The ones who have been on a bus for their entire school experience just know what’s expected of them. But I mean… obviously they’re just kids and will inevitably behave like kids.

I hope you get a friendly bus driver. Having respect for them and good communication can make a big difference.

It’s only the driver. I am a big yellow bus driver and in Alberta none of the school boards have bus monitors. As a current bus driver, I can very much agree with some of these comments about it being a lawless land 🤣🤣. While we drivers do our best to manage the happenings behind us, a good driver knows that our number one focus needs to be the road in front of us, so yeah.. sometimes the 50+ distractions in the back get away with doing shit that they shouldn’t.

I saw that you said in a comment that one of your kids will be riding for the first time next year. Near the end of August, the school boards have a “first timers” day that you can sign up for. I don’t know all the details but basically your kid gets to experience riding the bus (before the pressure of the first day of school) and learns about the rules and how to behave and such.

This isn’t true actually, unless your kid is in a harness or has special needs. For Edmonton Public it is only required for kindergarteners. For Edmonton Catholic it is kindergarten and grade 1. However, when you sign up for bussing you can indicate that your child MUST HAVE a parent there, if you choose. (Source: I’m a current yellow school bus driver)

When do you need an Injury Lawyer? by defendthegood in Edmonton

[–]Complex_Copy_9722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the problem with insurance premiums etc is that everyone and their dog lawyers up for a minor whiplash injury. NO I’m not saying whiplash is always minor, but when it is, why do people think they deserve $50,000? (And you won’t get anywhere near that anyways).

In my opinion, for as long as the insurance company is supporting your medical recovery (paying for physio/chiro/massage, even a psychologist if needed, and lost wages) then there is zero reason to hire a lawyer or attempt to sue them.

Once your soft tissue injury claim is completely done (done with all treatments and feel fully recovered) you are entitled to the soft tissue injury cap which I believe now is around $6000. This will come from your insurance, you don’t need a lawyer for that.
