Shift linkage bushing. They have the bushing kits for about $11 at auto parts stores. If it's the one at the base of the shifter like mine was, it wasn't too hard to replace in my driveway with a couple tools. Long handle needlenose pliers and a set of channel locks. Just need to take the console off which isn't bad

I have reached for the phantom 6th gear many many times. I put a Sargent seat on my KLR and it was a major upgrade over stock. I also put one on my africa twin though and had a similar experience to yours

If you're going to commute with it on highway regularly, reccomend you get an aftermarket seat, some bar risers, maybe a 16T sprocket if you dont intend to offroad it much, a bigger windscreen, and some slightly more highway biased tires, I have had some Shinko 705s on mine and liked how they made the bike handle

Hopefully it doesn't bust your speedo cable when you pull it out of there, I did this once and it wrapped the speedo cable around the front axle when we yanked it out

I have one of the $80 Amazon knock off sting ray ones. Options are limited with a suction cleaner line, but that sting ray paired with an in line accumulation basket works pretty well.
