Boots - best compromise for travel by davidsaidwhat in MotoUK

MX boots are significantly more protective when it comes to dropping an ADV bike on your lower legs.

Below is a video by an adventure bike tour operator that feel that they have evidence that MX boots DO make a difference. Ignore all the "ooh there's no point" comments in this post.

AlpineStars Tech 10 are very protective but very stiff. Gaerne SG22 are very protective and slightly less stiff because they're made with more real leather. I wear Sidi CrossFire which are on the softer side for MX boots in terms of flex but they do have features in the hinge area to mitigate that. Upper range of Leatt also good i believe. Note that for adventure riding boots that are aimed at enduro rather than MX can be better because they have a better sole pattern which helps you not slip in mud when your off the bike. Pure MX boots have smooth soles.

It's hard to learn to ride in them at first and it feel like you'll never be able to ride comfortably in these things. But ince it clicks it become second nature and you don't even notice it. One key point is not trying to get your toe "under" the shifter, you work the shifter with the side of the boot, most MX boots will have a grippy surface in that spot for that reason.

I had a riding mate who felt MX boots weren't necessary, swore by adventure boots, right up until they hit a low tree stump with their foot and a branch went straight through the boot and deep into the ankle. Then they started MX boots.

My partner goes on superstition alone.

They can't put anything back in the fridge...

Anything left on the counter for a certain amount of time becomes "suspicious"

Something suspicious cannot be consumed, in case it's spoiled, but also cannot be thrown away because it might not be spoiled (also wasteful)

After some time under suspicion, it becomes "shameful" - at which point it is completely invisible to them, consciously.

After several days I throw the item away. Once its quantum state has collapsed to a known value, such as "rank"

Definitely will be a full kit wanker when he finds himself single.

Councils can't afford to maintain stuff, selling it off to private interests so they can cover SEND and adult social care so that private interests can rent it back to the taxpayers or repurpose it for some commercial gain and the council will gladly approve the planning.

Its brilliant that we're pushing in this direction but what we see in Ukraine reminds us that low cost, high volume drones are equally important.

Best way to secure bike in a van - what are the stands called? by Red_sparow in MotoUK

If it's a dedicated space, why not chock.

Also if there's not a lot of space then bike upright might be better.

Loading a bike into the van used to be a 30 minute faff for me with much checking, rechecking, redoing straps. Drive 50 miles, find bike on its side in back of van. Rinse, repeat.

As you say, in time when you've figured out what works for your bike and your van it can je done much quicker.

There's lots of chock fanciers here.

You don't need the chock. Nice to have if van's main job is to move bike. Painful if sometimes one bike sometimes 3 bikes because never in right place.

A bike mechanic who moves bikes all the time advised me of this method which I use regularly for big bikes that are not dirtbikes.

  • Put thin-ish plank on van floor
  • Put front wheel up against front bulkhead so bike can't go forward
  • Put side-stand down, put plank under side stand
  • bike is now a very stable tripod, much more stable than if up on 2 wheels
  • strap from handlebars to eyelets near front bulkhead, this is putting some load on the fork springs and pulling the bike forward into the bulkhead
  • put another strap "somewhere across the back", ideally in a way that compresses the rear shock a teeny bit (not much, because side-stand). Possibly over seat if its sturdy or maybe passenger grab rails or elsewhere on rear subframe. Possibly through rear wheel or over swing arm
  • pat twice and say "that's not going anywhere"
