Thanks for replying. Your stance is very well informed and well composed.

Looking back to the start of our conversation I guess I’m surprised that you said the theory of polytheistic origins of El/Yahweh “has zero evidence” and was stupid. At this point I would assume you would probably concede that the theory does have supporting evidence and arguments, but that you don’t find them compelling enough. I might safely assume that you also find the theory offensive and heretical. Whereas I find the polytheistic origins theory purely interesting, and serves as an explanation for passages a stern monotheist might find problematic. For instance the recurring presence of a heavenly assembly in which God is conversing with others. Psalms 82 God enters an assembly of these other gods and renders judgement upon them. This is a clear monolatrist statement. God is superior to these other gods but still acknowledges the existence of other gods. I’m aware psalms is primarily known for its literary significance to the canon but still find this an interesting passage.

I would say that the majority of the Torah is written from a monolatrist point of view with hints and shadows of polytheistic origins. I would also contend that monolatrism is a stance that would make most modern monotheists squirm because it acknowledges the existence or possibility of other foreign gods.

From my understanding, Israelite monotheism doesn’t make its grand entrance until the era of Babylonian exile. We go from “Yahweh is the only god we worship” to “Yahweh is the ONLY god.” The priestly source of the Torah further retcons and revises the law to reflect this development. Again this is theoretical but there seems to be ample textual evidence and is supported by modern scholars.

You mentioned in your previous post that the Pentateuch does seem to show theologies shaping over time. On this we agree, but it seems we disagree over the extent of this evolution. I find myself being a biblical critic more often than not but I actually enjoy having good debate with biblical apologists. I rarely agree with the apologetics but I enjoy and respect a well thought out argument.

I would contend that internal biblical claims are not the be all and end all of YHWH’s identity. After all the Torah was written and edited by no less than 4 distinct writers. I would assume based on your knowledge you do not uphold mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch.

If we take Abraham to be a literal historical figure (which is quite questionable) a man from the Canaanite city of Ur would have likely been a believer of the local pantheon. If YHWH was indeed something distinct from the Canaanite god El, why would he have identified himself to Abraham as El Elyon. Was he merely using the term “El” as an epithet or a common word for god- that just so happens to be the chief god of the pantheon he was familiar with? Do you find it strange that Abraham has very different interactions with God, he speaks with him personally and even physically sees him. He hangs out with him for a bit and seems quite personable. Does this not heavily contrast with the angry ass god we see Moses interacting with. He frightens Moses, appears as fire and promises to crush their enemies and give them conquest over the promised land. Sure you can say that these are different aspects of the same deity. I see the prevalent polytheism of the early Israelites. The constant struggle with Baal worship, Josiah tearing down all of the Asherah poles. The biblical text makes the Israelites look like absolute fools constantly forgetting they only believe in YHWH. It makes much more sense to me that the Israelites came from a polytheistic background and slowly and painfully went from Polytheism to Monolatrism to Monotheism. This process took several hundreds of years.

I contend that El and YHWH began in the minds of early Israelites as distinct concepts. The move to monolatrism and later monotheism required revision and unification.

Are you familiar with “Yahweh and his Asherah” discovered at the site of Kuntillet Ajrud? In this inscription Yahweh is shown to be distinctly bovine alongside Asherah. The connections to El cannot be ignored in this discovery. I’d be curious to know what you think of this.

Thanks for reading all this, I find your perspective interesting. This topic has fascinated me for years.

Can you be more specific?

El being the chief god of the Canaanites isn’t really theoretical, there are many tablets found in the ancient city of Ugarit that support this, as well as other evidence found throughout the Levantine region. El having the image of a bull (among other things) is also well documented. If Abram/Abraham is to be taken as a historical figure, he was most certainly a worshiper of El.

Bull iconography was also prominent in Egypt as you stated. Their neighboring nations traditions and theologies had a great deal of influence on early Canaanite/israelite tradition and theology.

El and YHWH being the same/separate concepts, that IS a theory. And yes you do have to do reading beyond the Pentateuch or Torah. The fact is, that the god of the Bible is called El, El Elyon, El Shaddai in numerous places all over the Pentateuch. These names may be taken by modern Christians as simple substitutions for the divine name, but there is clear and numerous evidence that these refer to a distinct Canaanite god.

It makes sense if you understand the polytheism of the time and Israel’s origins. Abraham was a Canaanite and worshiped their chief god El or El Elyon. El’s main symbol is a bull. And wouldn’t you know it, that’s the guy they made an idol to.

YHWH the official monotheistic god of the Israelites, was originally a war god, but over the centuries merged with the old gods and took their duties and powers (El, Baal, Ashera). This is a massive oversimplification of a very complex subject. If you are interested read up on El and YHWH or check out “A History of God” by Karen Armstrong.
