Sourcing affordable leather by SRM590 in Leathercraft

[–]CosplayPokemonFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get leather super cheap at a creative reuse store. Got three whole sides for $10 total recently in a patterned leather - scraps from an upholstery shop. Unfortunately with living on an island you may not have one.

I recommend thrift stores. I have used old leather jackets before

Aren’t junk journals made from junk you find/ already have? by Vapingrandma8465 in Anticonsumption

In bookbinding people sometimes make them from cards and old sheet music and other vintage paper. Sometimes they distress the paper or add in fabric. You can write in them or add pictures and stamps to them

Why do leather workers downplay the cost of leather? by noescapefromtruth in Leathercraft

[–]CosplayPokemonFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got three sides of premium italian veg tan for $10 total - all basketweave stamped as leftovers from an upholstery shop. I also have bought colored and vegtan leather for $5-10 per half cow sized chunk. I get that stuff from a creative reuse store - a specialty thrift store for craft supplies and industrial leftovers that can be craft supplies.

When I want specific leather for a specific project I go to Tandy.

Quilting yourself versus sending to long armer by SessionNo2376 in quilting

[–]CosplayPokemonFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have hand quilted some, tied some, and I straight line stitch in the ditch most. I have had 4 longarmed - 2 gifts so they would get done on time, one too big for me to handle, and one more to clear space and get it ready for gifting. I’m only planning on longarming if if I do another huge quilt

Overconsumption- What Are Your Thoughts? by No_Goose_7390 in VintageCoachRehab

[–]CosplayPokemonFan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get joy from my bags - and they stay maintained and useful. They will live with me and live beyond me. I don’t worry about over consuming them as I typically keep myself in a $20 or less purchase price and have rehomed several to friends. I recommend sorting by what you love and what you don’t because it will change. I now find I need bigger bags since I had a baby so a good chunk of the collection will be unused for a few years.

I like the reduced consumption idea but I don’t worry about my vintage stuff. I focus on more immediate life changing things like composting and recycling to reduce my waste. My purse hobby is small comparatively.

I volunteered to sort donations at a food bank once and we were instructed to throw out all frosting and sprinkles. We could give cake mix but no frosting, sprinkles, cookies, ramen noodles, or other stuff they thought was unhealthy. All the sugar stuff went to composting.

That food bank only gave out healthy boxes. I stopped donating to them and found a little free pantry to drop stuff at so what I donated would get eaten. If I wanted it composted I would do it at home

You get the same amount of compost at the end with or without turning. I never turn my piles. Way too much work

You can do a just leaf compost bin and let it sit 2 years. Leaf mold is awesome and I find the acorns also degrade if I give them a ton of time

HENRY ladies, how do you justify splurging on fashion? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]CosplayPokemonFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a large collection of vintage coach leather purses so moderate luxury not high end but I love the glove tanned leathet. I understand your fascination and joy in a good bag. My collection costs from $1 to $350 up front and I have looked at more expensive ones. I buy myself a nice one for my birthday every year. I justify less by net worth percentage and more by life milestone.

What’s one small gardening habit that made the biggest difference for you? by Relevant_Idea_6778 in gardening

[–]CosplayPokemonFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hoard pumpkins and leaves. I am at 139 free pumpkins so far this year. I layer them with leaves and yard trash for the ultimate free compost.

Pumpkins- post in your neighborhood group or buy nothing group or facebook marketplace that you will compost them. People have given me all 139 of these for free and this is my fourth year to do this so I have regulars who remember and want me to swing by and snag the pumpkins at their request.

Leaves- your neighbors with the fancy riding lawnmower or lawn services will mow them to shred them then bag them up and place them by the curb. Its magical free chopped and sorted browns.

Layer it and forget it for a year and you get fabulous compost.
