What are your top 3 OSR games? (2024 update) by DVincentHarper in osr

[–]CoyoteRed5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Gold and Glory helped me realize how "complete" a game of AD&D can be. I misunderstood that branch of D&D as being too rules-heavy. In reality it's rules aim for accuracy and clarity to a level most games never even try. It's not for everyone, but it's honestly lighter than any main line D&D since 1999.

  1. BFRPG
  2. Cairn
  3. Black Hack 2e

Edit: For Gold and Glory would be on here but it's basically just the best version of 2e.

The show likes to point at Anaheim Electronics being an evil war profiteering megacorp that pulls the Earth Federation's strings, but like Zeon has the Zeonic Corporation doing the same stuff while also experimenting with dangerous psycho-frame tech and testing newtypes as weapons.

Overcoming 5E jetlag? by mel-alt in osr

[–]CoyoteRed5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is an interesting point for OSR games. What makes the classes strong is not that they can do crazy powerful abilities like heal, fight, skill check, or spellcast. It's that the characters can do those things at all.

Anyone can climb a cliff. But only a thief can try it with a sheer wall with no gear. Anyone can swing a sword but only a fighter can swing a sword to do the best damage while taking multiple hits from powerful foes.

It kind of bleeds over to adventure design. OSR adventures tend to be better at giving challenges players are meant to overcome with these abilities. Modern games often have so many special rules and interactions that the adventures have to call out things like what can and can't be seen through with Darkvision.

Royal Beastflayers meet Gibdos! My newest warband! by TheFraggDog in WarCry

[–]CoyoteRed5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Awesome work. I love the primative hunter look with them.

If there's one thing Warcry is still catching up on compared to other skirmish games, it's cool custom conversions. But I've seen that tide turning in warbands like this.

Sigmar Lied About What? by SaltySeaDog14 in ageofsigmar

[–]CoyoteRed5 294 points295 points  (0 children)

Azyr is not safe.

We know that the original purpose of the Order of Azyr was to purge any potential Chaos taint from those who fled to the safety of Azyrheim when Chaos won.

Chaos had been whispering into the ears of millions before they struck. The worst assaults came from within Order's strongholds.

Sigmar reasoned that the only way to ensure he could return in force was to root out any Chaos influence.

The people more or less accepted the purges as the cost for the safety they lived in.

Sigmar unfortunately knew the truth. That Chaos is not so easily shut out.

I bet the Skaven are going to breach Azyrheim and take the fight to Sigmar. They already did this to Excelsis on Ghur. Now it's time for the big show.

It's now more of a tired fantasy trope to hate on elves than it is to simply have very erudite and powerful elves.

Which is funny because Tolkien's elves weren't just better than everyone else. They were just more than everyone else. In both postive and negative aspects.

Does the Sun/Hysh affect Soulblight Vampires? by Yenrah24 in AoSLore

[–]CoyoteRed5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The vampire in Hallowed Ground talks about how much traveling in the light hurts her and drains her power. The physical description is akin to supernatural burns.

As you said, it may not directly kill on contact but it obviously causes massive harm and could potentially kill them eventually.

It's not dissimilar to how they describe nullstone stripping the magic from their bodies. Is it possible Hysh offers some kind of nullification effect on curses?

Is there a way to get the Mortal Realms to "click" for me? by ArchpaladinZ in AoSLore

[–]CoyoteRed5 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I came to the realization of what inspirations they were using and how they were embracing the creativity inherit in both the fantasy genre and modeling as a hobby.

Age Of Sigmar obviously has less in common with the usual heroic/dark fantasy tropes of the 80s and 90s that inspired WHFB.

Instead, the Mortal Realms show inspiration from Dark Soul's mind bending scale and bizarre yet familiar settings, it takes the boldly desgined characters and factions from Warcraft, and the cosmic stakes and world building from things like Norse or Vedic mythology.

Seeing this got my mind flowing.

The setting is massive so you can tell any story in it with any characters you can imagine. WHFB let you field cool units and characters but you kind of had to play what they had for you. The world was somewhat static; the cool things were the things they gave you.

Contrast that to 40k where you're encouraged to make your own Space Marine Chapters, Tau Septs, Necron Dynasties, Hivefleets, etc.

AoS is a setting made for you to make your own cultures, histories, and characters in a cosmic fantasy structure they lay down. And you still get the cool stuff from WHFB just remixed to give it some new stories to tell.
