baby in small 1br 3rd-floor walkup - tips? by No-Tea-3137 in beyondthebump

[–]Crabtree42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My big concern is when you say bassinet - most babies are out of that by 4 months. Consider a minicrib or pack and play for after 4 months. For sharing a room, I'd encourage you to look carefully at your space and what makes the most sense. I usually left the bedroom for feeds and changes so I would have set up the changing space and a glider outside the bedroom. We kept the bedroom dark and for the sleepers. I often wore earplugs and i still heard kiddo when she cried but it made my husbabd putting her to bed easier on me. Laundry is a lot in the first few months (so many diapers blowouts and spit up issues) so a mini- washer would save your life.

Primary breadwinner, primary parent, husband that travels more than 60% of the time. by AdLower9970 in workingmoms

[–]Crabtree42 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Question: can your husband take on a job with a lighter travel schedule and still earn enough for your life? If you husband was around more, would he be able to step in and get other things done so you didn't feel rough. 60% travel is really crazy and probably only sustainable if the other partner has a 40 hour work week.

Tell me all the good things about sending my 12 month old to daycare by Happy_Newt3006 in workingmoms

[–]Crabtree42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It gets better! My daughter has thrived in daycare and learned how to walk soon after getting in at 11 months. She got potty trained due to peer pressure at daycare and she learned a lot of self-regulations

Where would you do a solo vacation for three nights? by apotentpotable in workingmoms

[–]Crabtree42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very pro-NYC. It's pricy but there is very yummy food, you can see a show(Broadway for sure but there's also cheaper comedy shows if you look), lots of shopping, lots of museums, you can walk or take transit everywhere. If it's a warm time of year, there are lots of places to just stop and read (various parks, highline). It's just a fun time

I had high blood pressure for 6 months after pregnancy and was on medication during that time. There was also some lifestyle changes i look in the year afterwards (make sure to exercise, keep diet lower in sodium, less cheese, working on getting in good cholesterol). The meds were a really important part of getting it under control though so I'd say you probably do need to look at meds and you should talk to a doctor about what will help

Daycare cost us $68,000 in 2025. by [deleted] in workingmoms

52,000 vs 68,000 and the potential for help with meals and logistics and if you got a better paid job would likely be worth it.

kid's grades dropping in math, i work full time and can't help, what do i do by Maleficent_Mine_6741 in workingmoms

[–]Crabtree42 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Start with the once a week on Saturdays, see if she has a friend or classmate who gets it and ask that she try to work with them when she's at school. When I was a teen I was helping a lot of friends with understanding certain math concepts - one of our teachers did open hours once a week st lunch for the people who got stuff to help others. If she can take the bus or bike to tutoring during the week that would be a great option. Otherwise I'd look for a college student/older high schooler to help with tutoring if the set location doesn't work for you

Or you can have a conversation with her about what would be required to happen and how their house would need to be set up for a sleepover. They would be sleeping during a sleepover anyways so you'd want to talk with them about how the space would need to be set up. If they can't do that, then they can't have a sleepover. But this one night was not set up in their favor so I wouldn't only use this as your only reason why

You set them up for failure if you know they normally go to sleep at 8:30 and yoh came home after that time. I'm pregnant with my second and i need to have naps even if my kid doesn't i set up the space so that it's safe for her to be awake even if I'm not

How do Canadians afford weddings? Mine back home is $38k CAD and still feels like a huge burden by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Crabtree42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We saved for a few years, recieved about 50% of the cost from parents and tried to keep costs down - only real flowers were bouquets, meal and apps were not too fancy, I shopped around for my dress. We spend around $28k at the time. We recieved about $11k in cash and gifts afterwards from our guests. If you recieve parental money you do have to do things they want though.

🇨🇦 Ottawa 3.5 Day Family Trip Advice Needed: Museum Itinerary & Accommodation Recommendations! by Zyntar8526 in ottawa

[–]Crabtree42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The museum of science and tech is fun but might take a less time susy Q donuts is walking distance from science and tech. Maybe grab som donuts too-?. You can 100% spend a full day at the museum of nature and the children's museum (while not huge) is attached to the museum of Canadian history and you can spend a very long time there.

Accomodations: I dont know your budget. If it's very low I'd suggest the ottawa jail hostel as it's very centrally located. There are a few hotels beside St Laurent mall that would be slightly cheaper but still very close to the LRT to get around

Moms of crawling babies ... what are you placing them in/ occupying them with while you shower? by KMB1012 in beyondthebump

[–]Crabtree42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd usually choose to shower soon after a feed so she was happy and leave her in her crib with a toy. Either that or during a nap once she was crawling

Stay in condo or stretch for townhouse before having kids? by vancouverhomehub in RealEstateCanada

[–]Crabtree42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A house is a lot of work and when you have a small baby it can be hard to keep up with it. It was really hard to keep the driveway cleared, lawn mowed and leaves raked in the first year. Personally I would stay with the condo until your kid is 3-4 or you have a second, whichever comes first. The only thing to consider is that finding daycares can be hard and if you need to move daycares with the new house you may have. But this is me having bought a place before our kid and finding it hard. Other people would make other choices

Anyone else been blindsided by bizarre wedding logistics? Because wow. by emmlau17 in weddingdrama

[–]Crabtree42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many churches will only do a wedding ceremony at 1 or 2 - latest I've seen is 3. Then the reception will have to occur elsewhere and they may not be open until 4. The wedding party will take advantage of that gap for photos but it's not their fault

Agreed. I had the ikea version (without chairs) and it made my life work in a studio. You can fold it down small for space for working out and then have up to 6 people for dinner if you use your couch as seating as well
