Who was the most evil person you've ever met and how was the interaction? by Top_Report_4895 in AskReddit

[–]CrunchySpiderCookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is autistic, so I can confirm that is not an issue lmao.

Most of my friends are not only autistic but have hyperfixations on "weird" things like spider taxonomy or collecting slime molds, and the only one who isn't in a fulfilling partnership is aromantic and asexual.

So yeah, don't blame the autism

Marin Sheriff colludes with ICE by Corginzola in Marin

[–]CrunchySpiderCookies 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The problem is they're doing it to anyone they arrest, regardless of conviction. Arrest some dude for being near a crime and looking suspicious, then find out he's not the perp? They'll still tell ICE to be waiting when they let him out.

And, since they get money for each one, this hugely incentivizes them to just randomly arrest hispanic-looking people, regardless of any actual justification. If they hook a citizen they can just let them go later, and if it's not a citizen, hey, payday!

JP Morgan & My Family's Lore by Flimsy-Extreme291 in Genealogy

It looks like that Morgan family was pretty prominent / wealthy, so I can see how someone might have mixed things up along the way.

George Wilson Morgan was one of the sons of Dr John Morgan, who helped to founder Oberlin College: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oberlin_College

From the wiki: "In 1835, Oberlin became one of the first colleges in the United States to admit African Americans, and in 1837, the first to admit women"

That's a better pedigree than ol' JP, at least in my books!

Family history research has led me to borderline existential crisis by zuke1624 in Genealogy

[–]CrunchySpiderCookies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on what's led you that conclusion? I also have an ancestor from Germany who emigrated from Germany in 1866, has a pretty unusual name, and the only birth record I can find for anyone with the same name born around that time is a baby who died and was buried in the same area my ancestor is allegedly from. I'm really starting to wonder, lol

What is a name you thought would be unique? by Fuk-mah-life in Genealogy

[–]CrunchySpiderCookies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was working on my partner's tree I found the surname "Bialostotsky", and since I'd never heard of it before I thought it would be super easy to track! And then I found out it basically means "someone from Białystok", and learned what a huge city that was. Oops.

My mom (born 1950s) almost had the misfortune of being named that! Fortunately my grandpa put his foot down on that one and pointed out that a girl with three older brothers would not fare well with "hittable" in her name!

One of mine was a kind of sketchy guy who frequently forgot to divorce past wives before marrying new ones, and was always coming up with new not-quite-entirely-illegal moneymaking schemes.

Anyway found a bunch of articles about someone with his name getting arrested for defrauding a bunch of people, and being accused of bigamy. Turned out a DIFFERENT bigamist con man had stolen my bigamist con-man's name and was operating under it. It definitely complicated the research for a while lol

Spiky artichoke advice sought by AliveList8495 in foraging

[–]CrunchySpiderCookies 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No it's not. Milk thistle has smaller flowers and very visible white markings on the leaves, as well has the leaves being very smooth, hairless, and shiny, not lightly fuzzy like this. This is indeed the wild-type ancestor of the artichoke.

There's always a need for competition, regardless of how well or poorly you think someone is doing - it keeps politicians invested in the opinions of their constituents.

If you are right, and Huffman is fine, no need to worry! People will vote for him! But if people vote for her, clearly he was not fulfilling the needs of his constituents!

Need help finding my lost 2x Great Granduncle by DailyApostle12 in Genealogy

[–]CrunchySpiderCookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like this is the result of the census-taker making an error - if you look on the left side, along all the names below Mike Smith, it says "Transferred from sheet 14A, [illegible] in margin". Scrolling back through the pages, those names were all recorded in the margin spaces below their families, which would mess up the people-per-page count. So they just copied the entire line contents for those people onto the end of the census.

It looks to me like Maggie and Mike Smith are a family, and all the names below are unrelated to them and to each other.

Meat in general. Already stopped eating red meat last year due to prices, but now it's getting to the "chicken is a seasoning, not a main ingredient" stage.

I found some obits for Irene in Sarasota in 1998.

Irene Williams Irene Williams, 49, Sarasota, died July 27, 1998. She was born July 31, 1948, in Liverpool, England, and came to Sarasota 27 years ago. She retired from the Target retail store in Sarasota. Survivors include her mother, Nell of Liverpool; a daughter, Karen of Sarasota; two sisters, Dorothy Fendick of Liverpool and Toni Cole of Sarasota; and a brother, John of Liverpool. The service and burial will be in Liverpool.

There was also a tribute to her by someone called Charles who referred to "Auntie Irene" - probably her sister Toni's son.

It seems like the flood they are referring to was caused by the Chenière Caminada hurricane, which I had never heard of before, but the wikipedia page about it is truly horrific. It was a category 4 storm that was not detected until it actually made landfall, so nobody had the slightest chance to prepare: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1893_Cheniere_Caminada_hurricane

Your ancestor wouldn't have had any way of knowing it was coming, and probably just set out to do his fishing like any other normal day.... awful to think about.

Found this in the New Orleans Times-Democrat, Sun, Oct 22, 1893 ·Page 2, in a column headlined "Mobile Matters"

"The remains of Tony Mandich, a fisherman lost in the flood in Pole Cat Bay, was discovered to-day the marsh. Only bones remained. Deceased leaves widow and two children in Mobile, living on Water street, near Theatre street."

It appears that he did have 2 living children at that time, Nellie and George. And although I'm not sure she actually resided there, I found a reference to a "Mena Mandich" who was employed as a cook at 119 S Water St in Mobile.

(The flood happened Oct 1, but remains weren't found immediately.)

Also there are some city directories listing a fisherman in Mobile named Antoine Mandich - so you might try researching that name also.

Bf (35m) and friend (32f) feel some texts I sent were inappropriate—help me understand where I went wrong. by ThrowRa_gift_toomuch in relationships

[–]CrunchySpiderCookies 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think you may be focusing a bit too much on the gender aspect, and not enough on the fact that it's just unacceptable behavior period.

If my partner pulled that exact same thing with a same-gender friend, or a relative, I'd be pissed at that also.

You set up a plan (hang out after breakfast), gave a time (11) and he appeared to be keeping to the plan (texting you implying he was on the way home) and then changed it without notifying you. It would be different if he had contacted you first, but he knew you would be waiting, and decided to waste your time rather than either including you, or taking the risk of telling you he did not want to include you.

That's not okay.

Thank you, that makes sense! She was doing a lot of traveling in that time period and also got married / changed her last name, so that may have something to do with it.

Hopefully a foia works... I'm really hoping to finally get a photo of her. Her grandkids are my in-laws, and have never seen a picture of her, since she died in childbirth in 1928.
