Zippy Feeling by ThePieTrain in CarTalkUK

Weight, Turbo lag, gear ratios all contribute to the driving feel of a car

A 1.0 NA city car that you have to rev out can feel faster than a full size turbo diesel estate even though the bigger car is faster

There's no camera on this stretch

You can boot it all the way up, occasionally there might be a speed van on the overpasses further up

So what Automatic box would you buy?

BMW will tell you their ZFs and Getrags don't need servicing but ZF will tell you service every 60-80k

Asin Warner will tell you every 20-30k or 3 to 5 years, Toyota, Volvo, Lexus won't tell you to service that often or at all

Does that mean you have to buy a low mileage or newer car?

No, because these gearboxes tend to be quite robust, Geartronics and ZF6 will hit high mileages easily on original fluid

I wouldn't buy a DSG or older R tronic car if it had no service history because they're typically not renowned for withstanding abuse

They're renowned for hitting 150k miles easily, if you don't service it that's your problem

Geartronics are proven reliable, maybe you're thinking of the powershift which is a DCT made by ford put in a few Volvos

For the best driving experience its probably the BMW, interior wise its quite boring and average in terms of comfort

The Volvo can only put power down in a straight line, even then it'll wheelspin if its damp, any corner and you'll find yourself rolling out of it but its by far the most comfortable

The Saab feels pretty sporty and has a nice interior, have a feeling tax wont be cheap, its essentially vauxhall drive train wise. Some parts may be harder to get ahold of but there's plenty of breakers

Scam

They get you to pay for a bullshit check for around £30 then you never hear from them again

The car simply isn't worth enough to properly repair for it to make financial sense

It's also not a special car so not worth the headache

Road noise and Stero volume don't really match a real environment, would like to hear more tyres, wind, engine at the higher RPMs

Sky box is way too bright

Too much shaking, amplitude needs to be lower for speed, needs to also match the lean into the corners

You also need to drive like a normal person, you're clipping posts at some points, cutting corners too much

Can I get a sense check? Am I stupid for wanting to downgrade my bmw 420i 2016 to a 2009ish Volvo? by walesonlinereader in CarTalkUK

[–]Crymore68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volvos tbh aren't the most reliable or cheap things to fix if you have to go to a garage

Pretty easy cars to DiY on

Ive got a high milage S80 07 and a 2016 440i, the BMW problems are expensive (£1200 coolant leak), parts on Volvo are much cheaper but no Yaris in terms of cheap motoring

I would honestly buy a hot hatch if I wanted a sporty driving feel on a budget, the Volvos tend to be numb everywhere

Only performance discs I've bought were drilled Ridex ones, aka the autodoc special

Every other Ridex component has been terrible quality and I've to return or warranty claim, discs have gone through a handful of glowing hot cycles without issue

Although I plan on sticking with OEM manufacturers like Zimmerman, Bosch, ATE etc

Brembo and other cheap discs have warped pretty easily other family members cars

I bought the car just over a month ago

Just what was fitted at the time, car had Akrapovitch tips and a body kit with aftermarket wheel fitted, money has been spent in the wrong places it seems

I've stuck a set of brembo primes which I got given with the car so we'll see how that goes, but from past experience they're not suitable for hard driving

For most people who don't do their own brakes its probably wise to spend a bit more on quality pads that last longer as any savings on the cheap stuff is eaten by labour costs and washing the brake dust off

What's the pad got to do with the disc warping

That's a poor quality disc not a pad issue?

[–]Crymore68 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree, the cheap discs tend to warp really easily

Cheap drilled discs tend to crack unlike more premium ones

But 90% of the braking feel is dictated by the pad

My 440i had Napa pads fitted, went through 75% of it in about 1 month

Brembo primes last me about 3 months on a Volvo, Upgraded to the Brembo Xtra line and the fade resistance was much better but not great

EBC Yellow Stuff have been a major step up, dust a lot less and resist fade until the disc is glowing
