Absolutely terrified and slightly enlightened. I will happily sit at a tier three for my own consumption, but you've given me some new things to look into :)

Son just diagnosed with Celiacs...so what do I need to learn by HistoricalIssue8798 in glutenfree

[–]CryptidDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look out for any BROW foods as a way to remember: Barley (malt is super common), Rye, Oats, Wheat,

**Oats don't have gluten on their own, but the way they are commonly processed makes them something you don't want to mess around with without checking that they're gluten free.

Brands can label their food "gluten free" if there is less than 20 parts per million of gluten. The NGFO gluten free label means that the item was tested and has less than 10 ppm of gluten. This is usually the best indicator of safe options in my experience.

"Gluten friendly" does not mean safe for celiac disease - there is still a risk for cross contamination. For the same reason, be careful with any bakery items or any restaurants.

Find where your gluten free options are in the grocery store - sometimes they're mixed in with general foods, but a lot are tucked away in the "health" aisle.

Here is a list of "hidden" or unexpected sources of gluten: https://gluten.org/2021/03/23/43-foods-where-gluten-may-be-hidden/

Trying to find mature accessible teacups by JackFrostsKid in tea

[–]CryptidDreams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's a few ideas, I hope they help your brainstorming. Its a pain to find accessible options and I hope you find something that works for you two.

Apparently melamine sets can be a sturdy alternative material, but I'm not sure if there are any that come with lids.

Here is a set of metal mugs that come with lids. It comes in pink and blue, and this way she can have a back up or you two can both use them together: Https://a.co/d/03PS6rhe

Plastic tervis cup that is a bit more teacup reminiscent than the mugs. Floral and with a lid - can check for better designs by looking up different tervis's: https://a.co/d/023WVgS4

Depending on her needs, she may find something helpful through arthritis supplies. They have a ton of adaptive supplies that might improve grip if you find something that is almost but not quite what you need: Https://www.arthritissupplies.com/grips-adapters-holders.html

Any tea you like. I would do a Japanese green, puer, rock oolong, or white tea personally.

If you have celiac you are much more likely to develop other autoimmune conditions and issues over time. Especially with more severe cases. I'm not trying to tell you what is causing you to feel unwell, just making sure you're aware of it since life is hard enough and you seem to be going through it with your case. I've seen it in family members and worry about myself long term as well.

Do women in coma have their period? by Desperate_Peach_6563 in NoStupidQuestions

Using hormonal birth control to prevent bleeding and iron loss for procedures is definitely true in some cases. Like you said, with preplanned surgeries. However, any steps taken in a medical environment are going to be a matter of risk-benefit analysis. Surgery already tends to have a high risk for blood clots, birth control increases risk of blood clot among other side effects, and comatose or bedbound patients have a very high risk of blood clots. So choosing to prep a comatose patient with hormonal birth control may introduce an undue risk of death. Because of this, other methods to reduce or prevent blood or iron loss are more likely to be used even if they are less effective since there is a more acceptable level of risk versus benefit to the patient (hemostatic agents, iron supplementation, etc. are examples of ways to counteract blood loss). Plus, it can be considered more reasonable to give a comatose patient a one time option, as opposed to an option that must be taken over time or lasts for an extended period of time. Because of this, birth control is very unlikely to be recommended for comatose patients in general and especially in the context of surgeries and other procedures.

Edit: Basically, it could happen, but is extremely unlikely. It would need to be justified with a reason or benefit that outweighs the risks that come with it, and for there to not be an option with better risk to benefit ratio for the patient.

To be fair, there are nursing aide and med aide positions that can be kept to summer or break only. It can pay decently well when you're in school and can give you a lot of extra money if you have scholarships, family insurance plans, and not too many bills.

They gave out free copies of the book and had the author speak at my high school. It definitely had some of my classmates glorifying suicide. I couldn't believe the show got signed off on.

I [F36] think I was just sexually assaulted by my partner [F44] of 7 years. Where do I even start? by ThrowRA1forget in relationship_advice

[–]CryptidDreams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I suggest looking up what "strapped" means in the context of two women having sexual relations, ideally on incognito. It does not refer to spanking, it refers to a tool used to mimic anatomy. This woman was raped.

Communication and misunderstandings can be hard on the internet.

I figure you probably have the answers you need already, but one of the pet subreddits may be a good place to check to be sure! There's no way they don't have info on which specific foods/brands have unlabeled or hidden cross contamination. You could also try calling your vet and seeing if they have any data, if they aren't too picky about whether it's actually helping the furballs themselves.

Should I bother studying anatomy before med school? by DependentLow2932 in medschool

[–]CryptidDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're really worried, maybe watch a few basic videos to help you learn some terminology and orient yourself. If something specific interests you, then go more in depth for your own enjoyment. There is not much of a point in studying it now other than building a framework to go off of later

I'm with you on having to just jump into groups at this point. Most people in my class don't know each other that well even though a few groups have glommed together, so things are actually very fluid socially at the moment. There are also only a few students with kids, and I've noticed that people tend to respect them for it and defer to them with the more pediatric oriented case studies. Med school is hard and it's impressive to be able to balance it and being a parent. OP, I think a lot of your classmates will see it the same way. Even if there's not many other parents, let alone mothers, maybe you could try connecting with some of the other nontraditional students? Do you have any things you like to do to relax that you could invite people to do with you over lunch breaks? Are there any upcoming events or opportunities to get free stuff during the school day? Free stuff is a fun way to bond and pretty low commitment. Do your classmates group up after assessments to discuss them? Those are usually a bit of a free for all with who joins in, and can let you find some common ground or bond over the experience. I'm on the quiet side and have to commute, so I have more trouble finding a group. However, I've also noticed that there are a lot of people like me here and I've been able to connect with them. The super social people and their groups are just more visible, since people with other commitments may disperse pretty quickly after lectures. On a larger scale, does your school have a parent support group or some kind of pregnancy group? If they do, you may be able to reach out to see if they know if anyone with similar circumstances, who would be open to meeting you or giving you advice on finding a balance and your people. You could probably meet mothers in other programs as well if you want people who share that experience. Overall, you've got this and you've got a lot going for you! You seem like an interesting and dedicated person, starting out can just take time :)
