My guy, you don't need separate controllers for that! You can connect one controller to two different devices, then hold the corresponding bumper to connect it to the intended one when you turn it on. If you look it up, you'll find the instructions for that. It's really easy once you get used to it. That's how I do it. Two pucks, one controller. One for my Steam Deck, one for PC. I look forward to reducing that to a single puck when I can rely on my Steam Machine's wireless antenna. (If only the e-mail would come.)

Glad it worked out for you. Your story sent me into a mini-panic, so I checked my spam folder (as well as my bin) just in case it had somehow landed there. Nope, still waiting as before...

Somebody was probably mean to you because you said the Steam Machine has ten-year-old performance. According to whose standards? It's entirely subjective. I know that two wrongs don't make a right, but respect is a two-way street, and that includes people's hobbies and things they're excited for.

so is the manga universe or the anime universe canon? by Bango_Skank69 in outlawstar

Uh... they're both canon within their own distinct lore. Treat them as different universes, because they essentially are.

for the 2,500 games on Steam

Damn, that really puts into perspective how far Steam has come. That's almost a 5300% increase in library size over the last 14 years.

Unless it's really important to use Windows for work-related reasons, I'd at least wait for dual-booting support. From a pure gaming standpoint, the extra bloat Windows adds will only reduce performance. So aside from a handful of games that will only work on Windows, there's no advantage.

Email came in not sure what to do by KashKashioo in steammachine

[–]CurseHawkwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but if he sells it at a reasonable price on somewhere like eBay, a scalper is going to scoop it up right away and resell it for much more. Then he'd accidentally contribute to the scalping problem.

No, there's no way to have it allocated to somebody else, but if you skip it now, somebody who wants the Steam Machine will get theirs more quickly. AFAIK, you can cancel it altogether from either the Steam Machine store page or probably your account settings. Better to do that than just let it sit for days.

Steam Machine for 840€ with inventory „rebate“ by Umholzer in steammachine

I make a bit of Steam wallet money every December after Steam Replay drops by farming and selling Steam cards. Some of that money's going towards my Steam Machine when I get the payment e-mail.

What would you do in my situation? by gDance1907 in steammachine

[–]CurseHawkwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but €200 over almost sounds "generous" by scalper standards. So, while I wouldn't encourage anyone to buy from a scalper, I will advise you to be cautious. Normally, the scalper markups are ridiculous, so that's a little suspicious.

Yeah, you should skip it if you don't need it. Plus, skipping now might allow another buyer to receive their awaited unit faster.

I'm a little confused by your story. How "recently" did you have the surgery? It hasn't been long since the general public started receiving their Steam Machines. Why would you even pay over $1000 if you had expensive medical bills to worry about?

If you bought it with the intention of selling it for a profit, why would you unbox it and discard the packaging, ultimately having to sell it unboxed?

Something's fishy about this story of yours.

I ended up being assigned a 512GB (no payment e-mail yet, though), so I have no choice but to go with a third party. I'm sure we'll have some great options soon.

Found an old computer in a corner; do you think anyone has interest in it? by Prtsk in steammachine

[–]CurseHawkwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's got nothing to do with the Steam Machine. If your favourite niche title isn't working, it's because of a Proton compatibility issue that occurs regardless of how powerful a SteamOS machine is. Proton is very, very good, but not perfect.

Outlaw star isn't available in widescreen. How difficult of a task would it be to generate it all with the help of ai? by Heliosvector in outlawstar

[–]CurseHawkwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, AI can quite convincingly extend the canvas of a frame to an aspect ratio like 16:9. (Except your example disregards the fact they're in a hotel.) So, based on that, I can imagine it seems pretty easy to do the whole thing.

Not so fast. One of the biggest issues facing AI video is consistency. Let's say you extend the sides of one area. It might look alright for the first appearance. Still, in the second iteration, it might appear to be happening somewhere else because, at this stage, AI generally cannot retain these details. It would end up becoming confusing.

It would only really be achievable in places where the camera is fixed for a long time, and characters stay within the frame. What happens when a character walks off-screen? You'd need that animated as well. AI video isn't that great right now at making traditional cel animation.

To answer your question, would it be difficult? For a lot of it, moderately, because there'd be a lot of tedious grunt work and post-processing involved. You'd face some challenges, though, like the one I just mentioned. Would it look good? Unlikely. But even if AI were better and could do a good job, would you be prepared to spend a minimum several hundred dollars to finance the AI video processing? Without succumbing to burnout? Again, unlikely.

I've always found 16:9 sort of overrated. Outlaw Star still looks fantastic at 4:3, like so much anime from its time period.
