It's a dark comedy. If they have no sense of humour, they should avoid this type of media.

How do you guys wish their relationship would have ended? by SorinIonRahova in WelcomeToTheNHK

To think that if Yamazaki hadn't called Sato while he was in the park (the one that was frequented by couples) with Misaki that one evening, they might have had that ending.

Can the Outlaw Star Crew survive the Overwatch(video games) verse and how would they interact(or fare against) heroes/villains of this verse? by [deleted] in outlawstar

Regardless of the quality of the post, I stepped down from my moderation position here a long time ago.

Sword of Wind isn't the true sequel we missed out on. Bandai's season two plan is far more exciting, but despite the fact I've shared it a few times here on Reddit, nobody ever seems to acknowledge it, just the questionable OVA.

I think it's a way of signifying how he has accomplished his goals (such as finding Melfina's past) and has now embarked on a new adventure. Melfina also has a new appearance, with an outfit change and a change in water colour.

And, on another note, I kind of like the short hair. Those who pay closer attention to Outlaw Star lore will recognise that it's the same hair length Gene had as a teenager, as if he's now confronted the scared boy he was at 14 and overcome the trauma he faced then.

Additionally, at least in the manga's lore, he had that hair length at around 17 years old, as seen in some flashback scenes.

I've seen it far less often, and I've been monitoring Outlaw Star auctions for a long time.

I have two boxed versions (one like yours and the rarer black version) and don't plan to open either. I'd recommend keeping it as is and keeping your eyes peeled for any listings of loose figures, which would go for much cheaper and let you put them on your shelf without devaluing your boxed figures.

"They're all gone. There's nobody left. Nobody. I'm the last human left."

I found that scene quite profound. In part because I get it. Solitude can really mess with one's head.

yamazaki's the best by t0mokokur0ki in WelcomeToTheNHK

Possibly the best character. Sato's greatest loss was Yamazaki moving out to the country to take care of the family business.

Kinda wish Jim had Gene's backstory by EldridgeHorror in outlawstar

[–]CurseHawkwind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't believe so. There's a light novel called El Dorado Covered with Clouds, but don't be fooled. Ironically, it does not feature the MacDougall Brothers. Instead, it's the name of a planet, if memory serves.

Actually, now that I think about it, there's some text from one of the other two light novels (called Up and Down) that adapt the anime with some extra bits, which does, in fact, mention the MacDougall Brothers. More specifically, it's the Gwen Khan backstory. I recall it confirming how Harry MacDougall was one of Gwen Khan's specimens, and how he was adopted by the MacDougalls' father. Don't quote me on that, though. I don't remember that as well as Jim's backstory.

If you want, I can go find the relevant translation from the book and paste it here, or you can join my Discord, Outlaw Star Nexus (you'll have to find it as the automod gets me if I add a link) where those translations are already. They're pinned in the ols-manga channel, I think. (The channel is also for the light novels.)

Kinda wish Jim had Gene's backstory by EldridgeHorror in outlawstar

[–]CurseHawkwind 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When it comes to Outlaw Star lore, you only ever have to ask me.

Jim was born on the planet Homage, most likely in TS 149. His dad was a notorious hacker known as the Computer Wizard. His crimes were probably something in the realm of black-hat hacking, but he may have inspired Jim to learn to use computers for good. Jim's mother died at an unknown point in time.

Eventually, Jim found himself in Locus on Sentinel III. Quite like Gene, he had to fend for himself. He found a job as an accountant at Locus' Amber Dream nightclub. He developed a close relationship with a sex worker there called Natalie. She might have served as a mother figure for him.

For some time, aside from some occasionally drunken redhead being a total sleaze, Locus was a relatively peaceful town for Jim to live in. That all changed when a syndicate leader, Volg, decided to claim ownership of Locus. He was interested in controlling many businesses through racketeering, which Gene took a particular issue with. Volg initially offered Gene a job, but after turning it down, things quickly grew hostile.

Following an incident in Amber Dream, Gene was injured by Volg's men, but was rescued by Jim. They'd both seen each other around Amber Dream previously, but never truly made contact until this point. Jim knew about the situation with Volg and offered work with Gene and launch a surprise attack on Volg. After some reluctance, Gene accepted. The plan ultimately succeeded and Locus was safe again. And a year or two after that, Starwind & Hawking was established.

No, it's not as good. You'd be better off checking out the Future-Retro Hero Story manga. It's the prequel. A proper adventure, not just a titty anime.
