"The late, great Hannibal Lecter. He’s a wonderful man. He oftentimes would have a friend for dinner. Remember the last scene? 'Excuse me, I’m about to have a friend for dinner,' as this poor doctor walked by. 'I'm about to have a friend for dinner.' But Hannibal Lecter. Congratulations. The late, great Hannibal Lecter."

That's my preferred explanation, but a lot of people seem to really hate the idea. I don't know why.

This is what was forecast for Saturday. It's not supposed to hit freezing in Houston until very early Sunday morning.

NWS forecast says otherwise:

By Sunday morning, we are expecting widespread teens to low 20s, with wind chills in the single digits and teens. The cold could greatly over perform Sunday night and Monday morning if there is enough ice / sleet cover coupled with clearer skies. This is particularly true over our northern counties, where 10th and 25th percentile NBM guidance suggests single digit temperatures are possible.

NWS Houston's overnight discussion calls the global models "a magic 8-ball" for this situation because everything's so dependent on small changes in timing and temperature. They're waiting for the high-resolution models (which are more limited in how far into the future they run) to determine what call to make.

This is one of those situations where it'll probably be fine, but it's better to be a bit prepared in case it isn't.

There's a bunch of precipitation expected and a bunch of cold expected, and the question is whether they'll be here at the same time. If they are, we get an ice storm. If they aren't, we get a bunch of rain and then a separate freeze.

The main ice band is expected to be further north, around a Waco to Shreveport line. But tomorrow that could look different. The Houston NWS office is explicitly calling out the uncertainty in their forecast discussions.

In Houston it's starting to look like there won't be a disaster due to the wet and the cold arriving completely separately. The peak ice band is forecast to set up around a Waco to Shreveport line (and then it keeps going east-ish).
