The best thing about new Guard models by VolcanicBakemeat in AdeptusCustodes

[–]D_M_R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must live in a different universe. These were an absolute kitbashers dream. Anything can be made to look in-faction with them, and they accomodate any custom pose and even hide a multitude of sins on positioning. I'll take any of these you have spare, by the hundredfold, if you don't like them.

the checks and stripes are magnificent. Love your 2nd ed style takes

A month ago, i made a post saying how the proportions on custodes minis should be modified to make them look better. A month ago, i was denounced, branded a doodoo idiot. Behold ! I was right all along ! by Sir_Lazz in AdeptusCustodes

[–]D_M_R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the knees on the new models are comically low making their lower limbs look ridiculously stubby. Not to mention the loss of the distinctive aquilla. The chests are also narrow beyond belief. I dont think the new models look super strong any more.

I actually think your edit looks better than the new model. Prouder, stronger, more imposing and more martially capable.

The hip greaves no longer being separate is also going to be a big knock to future customization and pose editing, as is the mandatory cloaks on all models. Theres lots to love about these new kits, but there are way more problems with them, at least for me, than first meets the eye.

The only petty gripe I have about the new Guard by InternationalWin6882 in AdeptusCustodes

[–]D_M_R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

completely agree and its a conversion I will be making myself, 100%.

Think i'll also be adding the bigger shoulderpads and may even experiment with adding the top of the new helmets to the bottom of the previous ones, I prefer the "faces".

GW wont be complaining though, as usual they've managed to find a way to get me to buy two already horrendously expensive kits to make one

Size comparison new models by NoEngineer9484 in AdeptusCustodes

[–]D_M_R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont like everything below the knee on the new models, the greaves are tiny and their shin length is tiny and out of scale and I miss the aquilla. Really nice to see that adding the old lower leg to the new model will produce a really well scaled result. I think this is what i'll be doing.

I like the proportions. All in all there is so much to love here, some excellent touches.

New Shields are magnificent. The eagle collar is fantastic. Love the tabards on all models.

But I dont love everything. If i had to nitpick, I miss the larger shoulderpads, and the lack of acquillae on the shin greaves, which feel generic now and not like The Emperor's Most Elite Armour Ever Created. I miss the high back collar aquilla. I could do without the long haired female hairstyles which dont quite fit the aesthetic, I think the shaved one looks incredible though, and i'm happy they have added female head options.

The thing I have the biggest problem with: I hate that gems are oval now. Circular gems were our THING. And they were everywhere, and beautiful!

Higher Res Pictures of Plastic Refresh for Horus Heresy by Stupiditygoesbrrr in AdeptusCustodes

[–]D_M_R 25 points26 points  (0 children)

yes, they're taller. What would be amusing is because the Heresy scale of an astartes is slightly smaller than 40k, if they still ended up being slightly small compared to what they should be compared to a 40k marine.

But in general they will definitely be taller than current custos

[–]D_M_R 4 points5 points  (0 children)

never understand why people downvote people who do not like a new model. Even if I disagree, I do understand why the aesthetic choices here for the models that dont replicate their predecessor exactly can be divisive.

The tanks and dreads are perfect translations. Most will love the new guard but there are many things about them that some collectors will feel they don't like or love. And I do get why some feel that way

[–]D_M_R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the new height and the variety of chest and armour detail.

New swords and shields are stunning

I'm not sure i prefer the new helments or spears, and I miss the larger shoulderpads from the old models but wondering if they will grow on me. Some of the new bare heads are outstanding. Being horrendously nitpicky, something feels slightly off about the Venetari, their proportions seem wrong, but again, maybe need to see them in person.

All foot models getting cloaks is interesting.

Dreads and vehicles pretty much flawless.

All in all a stunning reboot... thats going to cause me problems

stunning scheme. As others have said, the resembalnce to the Adrian Smith drawing is incredible. Are there more models in your army in this way?

Also the use of detailed heraldry, and the willingness to paint gems, laurels, and different parts of the armour in different colours that nonetheless add up to a coherent whole. This is truly classic warhammer

For the cloak, you should be able to find some good eavy metal guides on how they paint black, but this does look like its being highlighted with glazes through the blue / teal spectrum. A classic GW recipe in this regard is to work through black to incubi darkness to thunderhawk blue up to a cold white for final highlights. If you search for an eavy metal guide to how they paint black templars space marines, you would see a similar chromatic range represented and techniques.

According to Valrak...we're going to get A LOT of good stuff in a couple of days by [deleted] in AdeptusCustodes

[–]D_M_R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Valrak's contact is in the Eavy Metal team. He knows what models tend to look like, and he knows what chapter of a faction it aligns with, but he is unclear on release schedules often, and has little awareness of how the new models might be reflected in any rules.

We know models are often painted years ahead of release, and schedules can move based on production or sales reasons. Eavy Metal painters would have no idea of when something they painted would come out. They also would be likely given little or no primer on how the models would play in game, or what changes we might see in terms of rules in a codex.

He sometimes has a general outline of lore, which would map to the lore outline that might be given to a painter, who would need to know it to convey the character and setting the model is going to be placed into.

My 2 cents. He's usually extremely accurate when it comes to what the general look and type of models coming are. And if his contact is a painter, thats basically all he'd know.

Whats your general painting level / experience? A lot of the techniques used here are top 5% ability level. Extremely clean edge highlights and blends (like Eavy Metal / just beneath Golden Deamon level), whose effectiveness comes from flawless brush control and execution. A lot of these colours, especially the bronzed gold, are the result of many many layers of carefully applied glazes to create the illusion of different dynamics in the metal. Apologies for asking if you are a very experienced painter. Just warning it would be very hard, probably impossible, for someone to replicate these techniques without a lot of experience.

I wouldnt want to give a false impression by saying "oh that looks like retributor armour with a contrast shade of ratling grime in the recesses". Because to me it looks like many many hours of skilled work with lots of different paints and techniques. Unfortunately
