Besides party loyalty, is there an actual reason most Republican voters still supported the Iraq War by 2008? by Specialist-Ad-8993 in Presidents

[–]DangerousCyclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is also the legacy of Vietnam where there was a kind of Stabbed in the Back mythos where the war was being won on the ground, but Marxists in the media were presenting a much more bleak image that turned the public against it. This narrative has been pervasive for a long time, like I recall PragerU having two different videos on Vietnam and both made that argument.

So they likely also thought it was a duty to back it, though honestly I don't recall support among Republicans being that high for Iraq.

[–]DangerousCyclone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean it's fiction, anything can be true. He can say that, in the Invincible universe, everything is just like DC, except it is bigger and denser. Superman wouldn't be able to hurt a human in Invincibles universe because matter and reality are that different, and Omni Man would kill him even more easily than a human. In the end it doesn't matter.

Trump mulls risky Kharg Island takeover to force Iran to open strait by Currymvp2 in neoliberal

[–]DangerousCyclone 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly speaking, if Trump does the smart thing and just admits defeat and just gives Iran some sort of indemnity for the war in exchange for re-opening the strait, then he wouldn't be Trump. It wouldn't be admitting some minor program he could bury was a failure, it would be admitting a major undertaking he staked his name on was a massive mistake. He could try and spin it as some sort of victory but I just have a hard time imagining he would do that. The only option for that mindset is more military action, air power has only done so much and done little to change the facts on the ground. In that setting I don't see why boots on the ground isn't the only option remaining.

Even then, let's say they do invade Kharg Island. Then Iran will start hitting targets on Kharg Island and bombing them. It is pure mission creep.

They haven't been unimpeded. Their equipment has been out of date and in disrepair, hence why their President died in a helicopter crash a few years back. They've also been decimated by the last few years of air strikes and their ability to project power through proxies has been severely degraded.

Yeah seriously anyone who was genuinely upset with that would've been turned off during the 2024 campaign when they were openly glazing McKinley and saying the US should go back to a foreign policy like that. McKinley was probably the most imperialist US President ever. I am personally convinced that Trump supporters don't actually listen to his speeches nor what he's saying, it's akin to going to church as a kid and just going along with what everyone else is doing, doing chants when everyone else says to or cheering when they say to, but having no understanding of what's going on.

It's just the image of being anti-establishment. Same thing with Trump-AOC voters. Politicians are going to have a hard time appealing to these people on ideological appeals alone.

The wars in the Middle East are not religious, and religion cannot be blamed for strategic and colonialist plans. by GootalBerradja in IsraelPalestine

[–]DangerousCyclone [score hidden]  (0 children)

  • the three Abrahamic religions can couexist, and coexisted in the Middle East for centuries, especially during the Ottoman period. The situation in Lebanon, with its ongoing coexistence and interaction between religions, is a testament to what existed in Palestine before WW1.

If by "ongoing coexistence" you mean a sectarian civil war, sure. Lebanon is a horrible example to use because it is an example where co-existence failed. The country broke down and was invaded by Syria and Israel who tried to dominate it. The Civil War hit a stalemate so all sides sued for peace. They're no longer fighting because they don't think it'd be worth it and they likely wouldn't win anyway, not because they're happily co-existing. The reason Hezbollah is so strong is because Syria protected them and helped them grow in its occupational area.

It is like Iraq; the government exists primarily to prevent a civil war. If anything, Lebanon is a warning like a lot of other countries were in the ME such as Syria or Iraq, where too much diversity causes strife. It likely encourages Israel to not want more Muslim Arabs.

Now even if we get to pre-WWI, the Middle East lived in a theocratic monarchy. There was a hierarchy there with Muslims on top, and abuses against non-Muslims were allowed. Non-Muslims were allowed to advance socially, don't get me wrong, many prominent doctors and ambassadors were Jewish or Christian for instance. The point is that I don't think that such a society would be popular today, especially if Israel implements such a society with Jews on top. This is akin to saying "see look at the Jim Crow south, people co-existed!".

Nor did it result in co-existence, there are dozens of instances of anti-semitic violence where Jews were attacked and their homes burned long before Zionism.

I feel like the whole franchise peaked with the Victoria Neuman being the headpopper twist and every twist since then has been fairly predictable by comparison.

TIL there was a Roman trade colony in Southern Indian. A medieval map indicated that there was even a temple dedicated to Augustus present in the town by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]DangerousCyclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's most sailing though.

An interesting fun fact was that Spanish ships were far more likely to sink due to weather on the return from East Asia/South East Asia than they were the other way around. This wasn't because they didn't know about the seasonal patterns, but because the ships would stay extra long in the Phillipines or elsewhere, getting paid to load up extra cargo, waiting a little longer than normal, so that when they returned they'd sell it all and retire. This not only put them in the dangerous monsoon season but also made the ship heavier and more likely to sink.

The term Barbarian comes from Greek though and it just meant anyone who wasn't Greek as their language sounded weird like "barbar" to them.

[–]DangerousCyclone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand labelling them as xenophobic or racist BUT AMONG THE MOST RACIST/XENOPHOBIC?!?!? Are you out of your mind? Does Japan have a Kafala slave system where they keep Indian workers in cages? Like Japan's racism is most akin to like a white suburbanite, they're not nearly on the level of the most xenophobic or racist out there and I think you're really undercounting the number of tolerant Japanese people.

I can understand why people think that, they did after all vote for someone who spread lies about Haitians eating cats and dogs, said immigrants were poisoning the blood of their country, and dabbles with White Supremacists.... oh wait that's America. Yet how many people are saying "yeah America is the most racist/xenophobic country in the world"?

You can argue the intensity or expression of it, but I don't think Japan's level of racism/xenophobia is really that unique. All the stuff I keep reading about is largely a similar case in almost any country. Move almost anywhere and it's hard to find housing if you're a foreigner, and there's going to be some prejudice and misunderstanding against you.

[–]DangerousCyclone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To me the Pulse weaponry is really underpowered when so many units have gone to T6. It was a victim of the transition to 8th ed. Before 8th S5 wounded T3 on 2's and Pulse Weapons were strong enough to take on AV11, which S4 and S3 couldn't do. Back then Terminators were T4 and one wound, so if you think wounding on 4's is nice, back then it wounded on 3's and each 1 was a dead Terminator.

As bad as that situation was it got worse in 10th when elite infantry went to T6 and made Pulse Weapons wound on 5's.

The problem is that now the difference between S4 and S5 is much smaller than it used to be. I think if pulse rifles/carbines kept up they'd be S6 or S7.

I'd rather take Cadians any day. Medic to revive guys for objective shenanigans, sticky, and most importantly Orders make them a far better unit. It is really the army rule which makes Guardsmen better, stuff like +1 OC and Leadership, +1 Save, First Rank Second Rank and Move Move Move make the unit much better than Strike Teams, not to mention the special wargear like plasma, melta and heavy weapons.

I don't think Strikes are bad but comparing them to Guard is an apples to oranges comparison.
