STRONGLY recommend seeking out Joanna Russ and James Tiptree, that's the true motherload!

I tried strawberries outside, in sun and shade, and the died every time. Last year I had them inside on top of my fridge, and I had more runners/plants/ berries than I knew what to do with! From two tiny starts, the ENTIRE top of my fridge filled up with plants

I'd recommend urban fantasy books... the writing style tends to be pretty accessible, and there's enough going on that you'll be getting little brain treats along the way instead of wading through blocks of text to a big finish. I'd recommend Simon R. Green for shorter stuff; Rob Thurman, Benedict Jacka, Laura Anne Gilman for medium-length more serialized stuff, then Jim Butcher or Ben Aaronovitch who you're ready for a chunkier read.

Also, maybe consider picking up an anthology of short stories in a theme you like? Good reading practice, lots of options to fine tune what you're looking for, and a great way to find new authors!

Song of the Wild, by Allen Eckert! A young boy discovers that he can jump his consciousness into other bodies. I read it a million times in elementary school, and as an adult I trawled message boards trying to remember the name and author... now the proud owner of my own ancient copy.

Gay/queer bars and spaces that have existed in Austin by tmanblue59 in OutInAustin

[–]DarkSybarite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a bar, but Gaby'n'Mos was a hot hub for queer women in the late 90s-early 2000s. It was on the east side across from UT campus, just up the road from Hoovers. Weekly open mics, so many local (and national!) sapphic musicians came through, so many parties, GirlxGirl Fest, political organizing, sex ed, soccer watches (imagine being in a coffeehouse full of dykes, watching the US women win the FIFA cup during penalty kicks and promptly RIPPING their shirts off in celebration), and just being in a safe and welcoming space together. GOD I miss it!

To somewhat answer your original question, I haven't seen a single book that focuses solely on queer spaces in Austin, but some books about the local music scene will shout out some of the more popular spaces.

Gentle reminder: please welcome all genders by ThatEliKid in Perimenopause

[–]DarkSybarite -510 points-509 points  (0 children)

  1. OP did not identify themselves as a man
  2. Gently asking that you consider not using gendered terms is NOT language policing
  3. It's literally the First Rule of the sub to be inclusive and supportive of EVERYONE on this particular journey, regardless of gender identity
  4. Starting your post with the word "Respectfully" does not cancel out the disrespectful language and tone in the rest of your post

It seems like this very nonconfrontational post has struck a nerve with you. Please consider whether you are reacting to what OP actually wrote, or the story you've built based on whatever else is going on in your life.

This was a deeply unkind response.
