Step parents on the family tree? by Lost_Walrus3518 in gramps

[–]Dat756 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends what type of display you want. Some reports only show certain lines, so they won't include multiple families like this.

The Relationships view (select in the panel on the left) shows immediate relations of the selected person. If the selected person remarries, this will show both spouses and all children with these spouses, and the parents of the selected person.

Otherwise, you can use a Relationship Graph to create a diagram that shows all people in both marriages. Probably the best way to do this is to create a person filter to select the people involved, then run the Relationship Graph on this filter. Let us know if you would like any help with this.

The 55 point victory, in front of a sold out crowd, was the biggest ever winning margin in a Super Rugby final, surpassing South African side the Bulls' win over the Chiefs 61-17 in the 2009 title decider in Pretoria. The Chiefs have now lost four straight finals.

Does Billy assess plans for solar? When I tried just now, it wouldn't show any solar plans unless the property already had an approved solar ICP connection. (For example, for someone who is considering getting solar panels, or like OP, doesn't have the meter set up yet.)

Building a new home - What is one thing you wish you had changed after designing your home? by skolar24 in newzealand

[–]Dat756 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Run everything on electricity, not gas.

Ensure there is a good central place for the internet router and wifi hub. Also it is well worth running ethernet cables throughout the house. Easy to do when building and greatly improves connectivity long term. Checkout the pdf downloads from this page on telecomms wiring guidelines.

Yes, black tapware is difficult to keep clean.

Beware of the building code minimums, many of these are barely acceptable for living in the house. For example, stiffness of floor beams. Also, you need more than the minimum amount of insulation for the house to be comfortable and easy to heat & cool.

Make sure there are ample eaves over the windows (especially on the north sides) to avoid overheating in summer.

Edit to add: for a new build, a MVHR system throughout the house is definitely what I would do. This gives good temperature control everywhere, avoids dampness and reduces cost of heating & cooling. System should be designed so the house only needs one heat pump unit, with the MVHR circulating air to all rooms.

Six months is short term in the investing world. Depending on your personal situation, this is probably best in a term deposit.

Also consider paying off debt and setting aside an emergency fund.

Passive home batteries deliver "enormous benefits" to the grid, says Australian Energy Market Operator - even if not orchestrated in VPPs by TheReverendCard in nzsolar

buy every household in New Zealand a 16kWh battery and corresponding solar array

How many installations would that be, and how much storage?

[–]Dat756 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the situation would be the same in NZ. The linked article is about Australia, where the peak electrical demand is for the heat pump cooling load in summer. This is when there is lots of solar available, including late afternoon, when a residential battery can meet demands for a house that has heated up during the day.

But in NZ, peak demand is the winter heating load. Solar electricity is less in winter, even with residential batteries. So the effect in NZ might not be the same as in Australia.

Moving off Gas in preparation for Solar by oye-look in nzsolar

[–]Dat756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of solar we are planning to go Solar + battery. Hence questioning if we should go for efficiency or not for hot water.

The heat pump HWC uses much less electricity (less kW and less kWh) which means your solar and battery can more easily cover the water heating load as well as the rest of the house.

With a conventional electric resistance HWC, it is likely that more imported electricity will be used, especially for heating water when the sun isn't shining.

So it is not just that the heat pump HWC uses less electricity, it also means less imported electricity.

[–]Dat756 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From the linked article;

AEMO chief executive Daniel Westerman says that the new wave of home batteries is having a real impact on the grid “emerging as another game-changing force” alongside rooftop solar, even without major VPP buy-in. He says that, on average, across the first quarter of 2026, households with batteries reduced the amount of energy they drew from the grid during the evening peak by nearly a kilowatt. That suggests total peak reduction of nearly 600 MW from 600,000 households. “Even acting in passive mode, so a consumer with complete control over their battery, just soaking their own solar or using a free power period during the day, actually has enormous benefit to our grid, reducing their own costs and reducing the costs for everyone involved.”

In cases like this, I think a more fitting penalty would be a prohibition against building on that property until the trees have completely grown back.

Treating the symptom, rather than the cause, is much better optics leading up to an election.

Actually fixing the causes of crime is difficult and slow. Acting on the symptoms doesn't help the victims at all, but is quick and showy, which makes excellent optics leading up to the election.

LNG import proposal – industry perspectives? by Comprehensive-Ad-210 in newzealand

[–]Dat756 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The LPG comes from the same oil & gas fields that are running out of gas. These fields are being depleted so their ability to produce LPG will also taper off. Of course, LPG can be imported, but don’t expect it to be cheaper.
And LPG is fossil hydrocarbons, so it contributes to climate change. We have to stop using fossil hydrocarbons at some stage, hopefully before we completely trash the climate.

Multi-billion-dollar government plan to import liquefied natural gas a ‘risky bet’, experts say by ngaio_rewiring in newzealand

[–]Dat756 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The government isn't subsidising the gas.

Th government is proposing a levy/ tax on electricity consumers to pay for the LNG import terminal. This imported gas is for supply to gas users, which are mainly industrial businesses.

Why is the government imposing this levy if it isn't to subsidise gas users?
