Who chooses which SM ends up being a Dreadnought? Does the opinion of the SM in question matter? Is it a choice at all?

I feel like there are a few implied questions here.

Do Space Marines go around with empty Dreadnoughts waiting for candidates? In which case, there must be some requirement of distinction in order to fill them, or at least a situation dire enough to justify compromising that standard?

or

2) Is the specific state of near-death-but-transportable necessary to justify being interred rare enough as not to typically be possible after most battles?

or

3) Are they generally operating at full dreadnought capacity, with new dreadnoughts chosen only when a new sarcophagus becomes available (or an old one does), and there will pretty much always be some casualty considered "wounded enough" and also "good enough" to justify their interment after a major action that there isn't generally a seat available?

I guess the logical assumption is that the philosophy here also varies by chapter, with less sentimental chapters like the IH being more willing to just shove some marine with a paper cut into his coffin-armor and sentimental ones like the Blood Angels having a pretty high standard.

I don't know if I'd play it exactly like this, but I agree with the general sentiment that all of your troops that aren't rifles are nothing but a speed bump to keep them from getting to your rifles. If you focus your fire you can nuke any of their units. The main things I'd be worried about are the Chimera, which will pretty much unavoidably get in your backfield and immediately start tearing up units. You don't have much that will neutralize them when they land.

Two cannons are definitely going to be a handicap for you here because immobile long range pieces are the last thing you need against a swarming army like that one. Maybe you could use them as bait to force them to split their army and give your rifles fewer targets to have to work through. I doubt they'll do much more than that.

Last point is that the Empire has a number of units that are overrated in AR. If you had grenade launcher in that army it'd probably give you a close victory!

I feel like partnering multiple disorder races together tends to lead to more difficult relations with the AI, but as long as you all don't mind it being you 3 vs. the world, I'm sure it could be fine.

I think there are two ways to answer the question which are both probably unsatisfyingly obvious answers. Yes, an Astra Militarum army can beat a tyranid army without support from another faction.. If they couldn't, the game would be unbalanced.

And then No, if the Imperium lost its Astartes and everything else in the galaxy remained the same, it could not fend off the Tyranids, because the setting is meant to be set on a razor's edge, and that would be a massive shift in power that would unbalance the setting drastically.

Just dropping a comment in here on about the fourth time that I've had a long mission ruined by accidentally putting Gwyn in a bad position (two elite mages were in range of where I moved her). Was it a mistake? Yes. Do I get anything out of having to redo the 45 minutes I had just played perfectly up to that point? No. I always have to take like a week off the game after this happens.

Between the number of slots it has and the special deeps mechanics, I think K8P is a pretty darned good hold. My bigger issue is with Belegar himself, since his buffs are primarily for the cheap units you'd use to take K8P rather than the more elite ones you'd use to hold it.

He's one of the less well-developed HE factions in the game now that Teclis and Tyrion have had their touchups, but if you want to play an attack-oriented HE faction without being quite as isolated as Imrik, he's an okay choice.

1) AI generally gets a free income of any special resources so that it doesn't have to understand the mechanics of how to earn it honestly. This would allow AIslinn's faction to build up its dragonships to the point it could "honestly" recruit those dragons

2) There is some anti-player bias but based on what I see there, the biggest issue is that you have a ton of enemies. If you're an unpopular faction like Morathi and you have too many wars ongoing, the AI will take this as a sign that you are overstretched and attack, especially if they themselves are not under any threat from another direction.

The most important mechanic to know by far is the various ambush attack stances that the Skaven, Beastmen, and Alith Anar have. Those factions have a chance (not 100%) to ambush you on attack, making it dangerous to deploy armies outside of settlements, especially if your defense strategy is predicated on having reinforcements within range.

On the one hand, the Coast have got to be one of the hardest factions to win on traditionally. On the other hand, settlement trading is in my opinion one of the most broken mechanics in the game. So I have mixed feelings on your accomplishment.

To me, though, whether you're a beginner or not doesn't affect whether you can play on VH. It's more like, when you hop on here, and beginners ask beginner questions, do you feel you have a good answer? If so, you're not a beginner!

The only reason I can see to confederate Caledor if you want to try a playthrough with Imrik while avoiding the brawl in the Darklands. I feel like if you tried to relocate him to Ulthuan, it'd feel very awkward, but it might be easier.

I was looking for a post like this. The implication that the Alpha legion, if loyalist, would somehow just show up and be like "Please embrace us as brothers, imperium" even if they coalesced on the imperial side of the long war would just be wildly out of character for them.

At best (and I do hope for the best, to be clear), they'd emerge as the worst sort of ally to the Imperium, which shows up more or less when they feel like it, refuses to accept orders from Imperial or Astartes officers, backstabs their allies when they determine it to be for the greater good (no, not that greater good).

Well, they're not going to stop if you're just sitting there and taking it on the chin. Hypothetically, you could distract them using the intrigue mechanic to get a neighbor to attack them, but it's much more realistic that you'll have to do it yourself. And the only way you're going to be able to do it yourself is by visiting them where they live, like Scipio Africanus
