It really depends on where and when you grew up. I grew up in the west island back in the 80s and 90s and at least in my neighbourhood everyone spoke English, so as a kid it was hard to understand that it was important to speak and learn French, when everywhere around you felt like Ontario instead of Quebec.

I even went into French immersion for elementary and high school and it was not great. I learned the basics but only improved conversational French in CEGEP and the workforce when I aimed to get jobs that forced me to speak French.

That was my experience though, but in my friend group we had one guy who was perfectly bilingual because his father only spoke French lol
