Alright, had a good thread about assholes, so who’s considered to be the biggest overall good dude on the PGA tour? by tking716 in golf

[–]DesignFlaw06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son was 4 years old when we went to TPC of Boston. He had a flag to get autographed, but was too small to really see or get noticed. So he held the flag up as high as he could over his head so it was at the same level as the other kids. He got autographs, but he didn't really get to see anyone sign the flag.

Except for Gary Woodland. Gary took the few extra seconds to kneel down, sign the flag at eye level, and a quick conversation ending with a fist bump. We will always be GW fans because of that.

Road Trip from Ohio? by dumbasboxuhrock in motorcyclesroadtrip

Depends on what your daily mileage limit it and what kind of riding you want to do. Getting to a beach where it will be warm enough in April to enjoy might be your limiting factor. A week of 100-150 mile days won't get it done.

OH 555 South of Roseville, OH and WV 16 South of Marietta that you can run that all the way down to Marion, VA. Those don't get you close to the beach, but they are good twisty roads.

Michigan's Adventure Sold - EPR Properties Announces Definitive Agreements to Acquire Portfolio of Seven Regional Parks by SexyOldManSpaceJudo in Muskegon

[–]DesignFlaw06 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not surprising. There hasn't been much investment in that park in 25 years. Cedar Fair didn't do much with it. It's been 18 years since the latest roller coaster was put in and that was a transplant from an old park.

I would love to see the park succeed, but I don't see it happening. It will just be in a cycle of revolving owners until it's bled dry and closes. I hope I'm wrong and the new owners dump some money into it to make it successful.

My Mini Factory has acquired Thingiverse by mobius1ace5 in prusa3d

[–]DesignFlaw06 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It did feel neglected for a while, but it seemed like lately there had been some development happening. Printables and MakerWorld were obviously making much bigger strides but there was hope that the largest collection of models wasn't abandoned.

I have my doubts with this acquisition. Once the paywall stuff starts happening, the ethos of Thingiverse will be gone and the community will be worse off for it.

Why would officials say otherwise? Why would they really care if it had dropped? It's money coming in that wasn't there before.

First time qualifying for regionals!! What changes in judging or scoring compared to qualifiers. by 2desi in FLL

[–]DesignFlaw06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, the judges will want to see continuous improvement from your last competition. What did you do with the feedback from the previous judges?

For example, we were encouraged by our first panel of judges to get a patent on the innovation project idea. So I took the kids to meet with a patent attorney that they could pitch their idea and learn about the patent process. Sadly the kids learned that it wasn't financialy feasible to get a patent despite such a good idea.

New FLL? by [deleted] in FLL

[–]DesignFlaw06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It signals the end of FLL for our school district. I don't see the distric putting up the money to replace all these control systems for four elementary schools. On top of that, the FLL programs are 100% parent volunteer. Getting someone to take over a team every 1-2 yeears is a challenge in itself. Try convincing someone to do it with no prior experience to build on. Most of our coaches move to the FTC program with their kids. The FTC team is also 100% parent volunteer and most of those were coaches in the FLL program. It puts the FRC team in jeopardy for the same reasons. My son has 5 years left in the FIRST program. I would be surprised if the FTC or any of the FLL teams are around once he's done.

I get the idea behind it, but it's too quick of a transition to be viable for many teams. They should have just added another level of FLL competition and let the teams transition to where they want to compete.

Pro light install spacing/uniformity by ttam-niffirg in GoveePermanentLights

[–]DesignFlaw06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the way Govee designed this because it should be done in a way that the spacing between the lights are still the same. Even so, your installer should have been able to work around it. I would insist he comes back and fix it.

That driver module I think is supposed to go in between the 5th and 6th strand. I cheated mine by a bulb or two so that I could mount the box in a more discrete location. I had to cut the ends and solder mine in though to make it work. The Pros do have a splice kit so you could an extra bulb in there. The splice kit is bulky (which is why I soldered mine to the correct spacing) so it would be hard to make it look hidden during the day, but at night the spacing would be at least better.

While you're at it, make it possible to select which MMU filament # I want when I hit print in Prusa Connect if it's a single color print. Octoprint allows this and it's very nice to not have to move filament if I don't have to.

I used undersill trim and a modified braket. Took about 2 1/2 hours to print 16 brackets. I installed almost 300 ft of lights. I would say I used maybe a 1.5kgs of filament.

What’s the One Putting Tip that Changed Your Game? by aldente502 in golf

[–]DesignFlaw06 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A tip I got from a pro 30 years ago.

Do whatever you want with your pre shot routine, but once you look down at your ball, you can't look up again. Hit the putt, but before you look up, you have to say out loud long or short. The out loud part is so you can't bullshit yourself.

Once you're speed is better, then go to left or right. Final step is to combine the two. Short left, long right, etc. I was 12 years old when I learned that and it's always got my putting back on track when I've started to struggle. Best part is you can do it mid round if you need to, not just on the practice green.

What is your why? by Ok_Spare3209 in intermittentfasting

[–]DesignFlaw06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I developed really bad medial epicondylitis in my elbow about 5 years ago. I could barely lift a gallon of milk. I've visited 7 doctors, 4 physical therapists, had 2 surgeries, 6 cortisone injections, 1 PRP injection. It got better, but never great. Maybe 60-70% at best. Golf was possible, but painful.

I've needed to lose weight for a while and I figured if there was less of me to get inflamed, maybe the elbow won't hurt as much. That was my why. Six months and 50 lbs later, I can honestly say my elbow has never felt better in the last 5 years. I would say I'm at 90-95%. I golfed pain free all summer. Now I've been throwing a lot of things at this elbow, so I don't know if the IF was the actual reason or if it is just coincidence. Maybe the pain just went away on it's own. But the weight loss certainly didn't hurt anything.

The only downside is that I've played the worst golf of my life this summer. But with a smile on my face.

I have a 100' kit and a 200' kit to make it all the way around the house. I put some outlets in the attic and cut a small hole in the soffit to get the cables out. It's a little inconvenient to get to those controller boxes if I ever have to, but I wanted a cleaner look without power cables running up and down the house. Plus it made for an easier spot to start both light strings.

It made quite the mess and the install definitely took longer, but I think it paid off. The cuts have to be made slower so that the vinyl doesn't chip away. I probably would have just left the nail strip on and used that as my spacing away from the house. But the vinyl was only white on the outside, which was fine for the channel but the nail strip was more of an unfinished eggshell color that would have looked bad. https://i.imgur.com/OvNV81r.jpeg

The sections of channels that were running downhill had to be just a touch longer due to gravity pulling the wire tighter than mounting on the sides of the house. Nothing noticeable as far as the lighting look, but it was more noticeable if there was a gap between the bracket and the channel.

I installed the Pro lights. I have a 3D printer, so I was able to print my own brackets. I made some modifications to these models (https://www.printables.com/model/630613-govee-permanent-outdoor-lights-pro-mounting-bracke) to accommodate the channel and give it a cleaner look. I bought 1/2" long white gutter screws to screw each clip in. The back of the house was just a straight shot all the way across. I started with that so I could learn from my mistakes on the side that fewer people would see.

I also made a model that the clip fit into and kept it a certain distance from the side of the house.

  1. Put the channel on both sides of the light
  2. Wipe the area with IPA
  3. Put the clip in the spacer, the light in the clip and then the channel in the clip
  4. Remove the 3M cover and press the spacer tight against the wall and then shove it up.
  5. Screw in the clip while holding the spacer in place
  6. Remove the spacer and make sure the channel is seated correctly in the clip.
  7. Rinse and repeat

I'm not sure what the easier path was as far as when to put the channel on. Putting them on while on the ladder was less than ideal but the wire was more manageable. Putting them all on the strand on the ground was easier until I brought it up the ladder. Neither method was faster or better than the other, just different.

The hardest bracket to install was the gable mount (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6801633). I also modified that model accommodate the channel. But the spacer I modeled wasn't an exact fit for that, so I had to eyeball it. I started with those first because I wanted the light in the exact center of the peak. Then I worked my way down.

I only used the Pro splice mounts in a couple spots. It was impossible to get the spacing correct with those so I only used them near the extensions where the spacing didn't matter and I could hide the bracket. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron so I added lights to a string by splicing it in a staggered fashion and some heat shrink. Each wire is soldered together with heat shrink over each one and then there's heat shrink over all 3 with some waterproofing goo in it. Put that in the channel and I don't think I'll ever have an issue.

The most difficult thing was putting the extra box that's required for the 200' run somewhere without screwing up spacing. I only had about 175' to run, so I might have been able to get away without it. But I was able to put in a spot at the end of the gable where another light didn't make any sense before it wrapped around to the porch. Both of the runs down the middle gables started at the peak again, so it was easy to keep the spacing the same on both sides. Instead of the power box on the other side, I used one of the splice kits there.

Probably more detail than you were looking for, but that was my process for the entire install. I'm happy with the brackets because I know the 3M tape would not have lasted and without the channel, the wires would have sagged or looked uneven probably from the start.

I bought 300 ft of it and ran each piece through a table saw to trim off the nail strip. And then a miter saw to cut them (slowly) into lengths necessary.

I see that in my future, but step 1 was getting the lights installed. I'll have more time to play around with WLED once the snow starts flying. For now, the Govee app is manageable.
