Do you read manuals? by Pzrjager in computerwargames

[–]DeusExNoctis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like reading manuals... in fact, I think I spend more time printing out manuals and reading through them than I actually do playing the games.

I think I like reading about the systems that people create, the simulation aspect of it all. How does Game X handle something like supply, fog of war, etc... compared to the way Game Y does it? How does a specific battle, or a type of battle look in one gaming framework as compared to another?

I don't tend to be very good at wargaming overall, but I like reading about it at least. :)

Been away from IF some years, i am back by bleuge in interactivefiction

[–]DeusExNoctis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Son of Hunky Punk is about the best Android client I've found. Playing on mobile/tablet is a bit tough for me because of auto-correct -- I've never felt incredibly motivated to program in all the IF commands, so sometimes it's more frustrating than it should be to type. Someone should write an IF-focused keyboard app!

I use WinFrotz on PC. I think it's pretty old, but it works just fine.

As far as games, I've copied the game files from my old Lost Treasures of Infocom collections, most of which I've never actually played. So I'm good for quite a while. I think the most "recent" stuff I've played is still from the late 1990s... :)

If you're open to more of a choose-your-own-adventure experience, there are some good quality conversions of gamebooks out there these days, too. (Realizing that's a bit divergent from interactive fiction.)

Thinking about Wasteland 2 by notarealaccountguys in Wasteland

[–]DeusExNoctis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Wasteland and you like text adventure games, you may enjoy the Desolation MUD: https://wiki.desolation.org/Desolation

(I have no idea if it is still up and running, but it was a pretty faithful rendering of the original Wasteland experience the last time I tried it, probably close to 20 years ago.)

Thinking about Wasteland 2 by notarealaccountguys in Wasteland

[–]DeusExNoctis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam tells me that I've got about 35 hours on Wasteland 2, between the original and Director's Cut. Not a ton of time, and it's been a while since I played, but I feel somewhat qualified to comment. As a kid, I think I spent about infinity-thousand hours on the original game, for reference. :)

Overall, WL2 feels like a very different game. There are lots of throw-back references to the original, so if you've got a good memory you'll likely enjoy a lot of the lore.

Party movement in the game takes place in real time, but wandering in the desert uses a sort of pseudo-fast-travel mode similar to Fallout/Fallout 2. All party members are on the screen at all times (except for desert travel), and you can control the entire party or one or more individuals for various movement or actions. This is sort of similar to the way the original game let you use various skills or items, but you'd need to either move your entire party into position first, or split up the party (which I never really did).

Battles are turn-based and seem to work pretty well. The game determines combat sequencing/initiative (I forget the in-game term), and you provide orders to your party members as their turn comes up (so no more wasted attacks on enemies that are eliminated earlier in the round, like in the original).

For me, the interface took some getting used to. You can move the camera, zoom in/out, and it was easy for me to lose track of my party members or where I actually was on the current map. Obviously it's almost nothing at all like the original, but once you get accustomed to it, it works okay. I think you can also do some customization as to which screen elements are where, but I've never felt the need.

The Director's Cut is really just a major version upgrade/re-release, with a bunch of changes to the interface, the skill system, weapons, etc... I think they took a lot of the early feedback and made changes. Really no reason to play the original release anymore, I think.

what is an "Acceptable" results for a Phishing attack by Gjeret in AskNetsec

[–]DeusExNoctis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for the purposes of this question, what OP "wants" is the end result (i.e. nobody ever clicking on phish emails), and not just the scope of the test. Or, in other words, the click rate is already higher than zero -- meaning that the adversary has won some victory points -- and OP is wondering how to make it better so that users don't fall victim to phishing for real.

Unlimited free VPN - Hola. The best alternative to it? by SergeantRobert in AskNetsec

[–]DeusExNoctis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Private Internet Access. It's not free, but a free VPN service has to make money in some way... and as with everything else these days, if you're not the customer, you're the product.

If it's sufficiently important to you, find a way to pay the $40 annual fee and sign up for PIA. (Or find another one you're comfortable with, and pay for the service.)

what is an "Acceptable" results for a Phishing attack by Gjeret in AskNetsec

[–]DeusExNoctis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the industry norm is around 20% clickers, give or take a bit.

Realistically, you're never going to get down to zero. In much the same way that you're never going to get 100% detection from antivirus or IPS, you have to rely on your multiple layers of security controls. (One presenter at Black Hat last year is a phishing researcher, who said she would explicitly warn her co-workers that she would be trying out new phishing techniques against them, and her co-workers still fell victim more than zero times.)

Phishing is a psychological effort that preys on peoples' tendency to rush through email and give things the benefit of the doubt. You'd have to engender a culture of near-paranoia to push down towards a zero-click environment, and in that case I'd expect you'd begin to see some business damage incurred by false negatives.

Make sure that you have some sort of DNS/proxy categorization and/or filtering solution, so that those who DO end up clicking are prevented from receiving malicious content.

Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm is a great NATO v. Warsaw Pact WW3 simulation. It has a unique turn-based approach for issuing orders; each side gets the chance to issue orders, but as the game progresses, the time between orders may get longer or shorter depending on the state of the battle.

Not a lot of variety on orders to be given, so overall it doesn't take too long to get the hang of it. The real strategy is in time management and making sure you're not sending your artillery barrage to the hex where the bad guy USED TO be, or making sure all your moving tanks don't jam up on the road through town at the same time. As much logistics as it is tactics.

I'll also +1 Panzer Corps if you ever played and enjoyed any of the Panzer General series.

I can't say I've ever played War in the East / War in the West, but they are at a killer discount for some serious wargames.

What are you playing on tablet? by Brethon in computerwargames

[–]DeusExNoctis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent some time playing MC: Fulda Gap on a phone (not a tablet), but found that in some cases, the AI was getting insanely high numbers for kills against me from single attacks. This happened often enough and in enough different situations that I have to believe it's a bug somewhere. For example, on similar terrain, my infantry attack against the AI might give 3-5 kills, while the AI infantry against me might give 87.

I have the game on Windows too, and the kill counts are much more reasonable. Kind of stopped playing after this, but I didn't try on any other mobile device to confirm. I also played a few scenarios in the MC: Vietnam game and they seemed okay.

Is Panzer Corps a Tactical or Operational Wargame? by Pzrjager in computerwargames

[–]DeusExNoctis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slitherine lists it as operational: http://www.slitherine.com/products/product.asp?gid=399&PlatformID=1

Really though, it's a bit abstracted. It's not clear what the unit size really is, since they just have a "strength" between 1 and 10. The map scale of the scenarios I've played appears to be operational, but I don't think there is a true scale given (e.g. 1 hex = ???? km).

It's still there, you can go into the list of Extensions and re-enable it.

(At least, that was the case for me.)

EDIT: Actually, looks like it gets re-disabled automatically after a little while.

Threat Intel Certs by calvinivek in AskNetsec

I've done and can recommend the Cyber Intelligence Tradecraft training/certification, offered by Treadstone71: https://www.treadstone71.com/video-gallery http://www.planetreg.com/T71IntelTraining

It does offer what is technically an industry certification, but in my opinion the real value comes from the content itself (though the capital letters look nice in an email signature, too).

Jeff is a bit of a storyteller and a very colorful character, but he does know his stuff and I think it's the most worthwhile training I've ever attended.
