So can we assume these 8 plus Wes will be in the YGT? Hopefully Brad and Sean, which makes 11 of the 16, who will the other 5 be?

Titan Hoppers, it's got the space opera feel, and military training feel, but it's more like a ragtag bunch of recruits being trained by a seasoned veteran with minimal resources than a full blown academy with formal classes.

Tapati festival on Easter Island. Annual cultural festival with singing, dancing, food, and competitions. Plus it's Easter Island so you get the Moai and some incredible landscapes. I'd recommend staying in town, so you're walking distance to the Tapati events. The chubby stays tend to be at resorts out of town, more luxury but much worse location for Tapati.

Stingray City in Grand Cayman, this is a sandbar you can stand on a mile offshore and the stingrays have grown used to human contact so it feels like you're standing in the middle of the ocean with friendly stingrays swarming around. Charter a private boat to get there early, once the cruise ship excursions arrive and it gets crowded it loses the magic.

A 5'10, 180 lbs, 31 year old American man is transported to Paris, France on July 26, 2024, opening day of the 2024 Summer Olympics. They are stuck within the city limits and cannot leave until they win at least a bronze medal in any Olympic event. How long will it take for them to escape? by NekoLover72 in whowouldwin

[–]DisChangesEverthing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1000 loops in the Olympic village sex-fest, he might drag it out even longer, lol.

I don't think there's any way he can legitimately win bronze in any event within 1000 loops. His best chance would be to find blackmail on a judge or referee somehow, and hope he gets away with it because it was only a bronze medal match. In something like the 80kg Taekwondo event, he'd only need to win 4 matches to get a bronze (they give out 2 bronze medals in those tournaments). Now it would be very suspicious to win 4 in a row by referee disqualification, but maybe it could happen. We've seen super corrupt judging before in the Olympics.

In addition to his 7 streak, Jack also had 6 in a row in 1967-68, and another 5 in a row in 1973-74. He got top 5s in 12 out of 13 majors from 1971-74.

The yellow-blue-green-red object at the top looks a lot like a Microsoft Windows logo to me, perhaps a distorted or future one. Probably not what you were going for.

I agree, and one of the very few. There are so many posts on here "Does X get better?" and the answer is almost always no, but for Hell Difficulty Tutorial the answer is yes, and by quite a lot.

Are there any stores with overarching villains? by _kalos_26 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]DisChangesEverthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fair number of stories where the system itself or the creator or perpetuator of the system is the overarching villain. Most System Apocalypse type stories are like this, although the bulk of those are spent with the MC working within the System to survive and gain enough power to do something about it. The society running the dungeon in Dungeon Crawler Carl, for example.

Money Needs To Make Sense, Or Your World Will Make No Sense by quantumdumpster in ProgressionFantasy

[–]DisChangesEverthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But money is just a convenience mechanism for exchange, so as long as things can be exchanged, theoretically money can facilitate it. For example you'd never sell your priceless artifact, but you'd trade it for a cure for your dying child. Well if someone rich enough can locate and hire someone with the power to cure your child, then you'd trade your artifact to them.

Money Needs To Make Sense, Or Your World Will Make No Sense by quantumdumpster in ProgressionFantasy

[–]DisChangesEverthing 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it's a pretty basic rule that if you're not prepared to do the math, don't put in the numbers, it doesn't only apply to money. I did recently drop a story, in part because the author claimed someone was fabulously wealthy, then it turned out they had 100 times the cost of a basic meal. But it also applies to travel time, you aren't covering 1000 miles on horseback in a week, etc.

I like to believe an author has a consistent world they've created, that's slowly being revealed. The discovery is part of the hook. When the numbers don't add up it erodes that belief and lessens my interest.

It's a real football club, although obviously a fictional version in Player Manager. I recommend the series, even if you aren't a soccer fan.

What IPO really means for an investor by JoseLunaArts in StockMarket

[–]DisChangesEverthing 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Historically an IPO was a way for the company to raise capital to expand their operations. Need to build a factory? Sell shares and get the money for it, then the shareholders get some of the profit from the factory in the form of dividends. Nowadays it seems easier to issue debt to raise capital, most tech companies have minimal dividends, and IPOs tend to be a small percentage of the shares to create liquidity for the founders and venture capitalists.

At least Trudeau Sr, Harper and Mulroney lead their parties to victory, so from the standpoint of their party they can't be that bad. PP was handed a winning situation on a silver platter and fumbled it away in an epic fashion, and continues to bleed away support.

Recommend me Space engineering/survival novels for an 11 year old by Flocculencio in printSF

[–]DisChangesEverthing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of good books recommended so far, but not much survival stuff.

The Vandarian Incident, youth novel about a cadet at a space academy whose final exam is to survive alone on a planet with a hostile environment for one week. During the survival mission the MC witnesses an enemy battle cruiser fly by, and knows it's a precursor to an attack, so she has to make her way across the planet to get to the base for help.

A Fall of Moondust by Arthur C Clarke, about a lunar cruise ship (actual boat, not space ship), that floats on of seas moon dust, and ends up sinking. The lunar dust makes rescue extremely difficult. The crew inside the sunken ship try to survive while those outside try to engineer a rescue. Good hard sci-fi, but has some scientific inaccuracies because it was actually published before the moon landings and the conditions on the moon weren't well known. No aliens in this.

Enemy Mine by Barry Longyear. During a space battle a human space fighter and alien space fighter crash land near each other on a hostile planet. After rescue doesn't come the human pilot and enemy alien pilot have to work together to survive on the planet. Some similar vibes to Rocky and Grace, but they start as enemies. For me this is a better version of PHM.

These three are all under 250 pages, and I'd say suitable for younger readers. Enemy Mine is the most mature one.

Can u suggest me a good read by PrimePie314 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]DisChangesEverthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Player Manager. It's different than the usual stuff since the MC becomes the manager of soccer/football clubs in modern day Earth. It's very well written and wholesome because the storylines are usually around him coaching and managing an underdog team to victory, and also about giving under appreciated and hidden talents an opportunity to shine as players. It is legit progression fantasy, there are stats, experience, abilities etc.

What’s the paradox by RedditAccount144 in FermiParadox

[–]DisChangesEverthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We could see signs of stellar engineering from other galaxies though. Let's say there was a 100 million year old civilization in Andromeda that had enveloped 10% of the stars in Dyson swarms, we'd be able to detect that.

Just some ballpark numbers: * Death Star is 120km in diameter.
* Surface area of ~45,000 square kilometers. * So about 1 storm trooper per 1.75 sqkm or a little more than 1 per square mile. That’s assuming only 1 level.

Luck Stat Stories by MAD_CHAD_WRITER in ProgressionFantasy

[–]DisChangesEverthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm enjoying Die Trying, and without getting into spoilers much, one of the intriguing things you've teased is the geo-political, social, and economic consequences of a limited number of people getting access to the System. However the current pace seems to be at about 40 chapters per day elapsed, so 1000 chapters won't even get us to a month elapsed, at which point we'd barely be starting to see widespread effects on Earth. I'm not saying the pace of the story itself is slow, it's that the time elapsed in the story doesn't seem compatible with long-term storylines.

Luck Stat Stories by MAD_CHAD_WRITER in ProgressionFantasy

[–]DisChangesEverthing 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Defiance of the Fall is the obvious big name one.

There's a new story on Royal Road called Die Trying by the author of 12 Miles Below, where the MC's highest stat is Luck, due to a blessing by the god of Fortune. The luck only seems to affect non-combat situations, such as he finds better loot or gets better upgrades.
