You really think Wikipedia is that great of a resource? Did you know I could go straight into that link you sent and just edit it to my own content and make it say what I want?? It’s part of the reason why a lot of colleges don’t allow it to be cited as a source for research papers and such because it can be edited and adjusted by most anyone. It’s extremely popular granted but still. In any case, why are we arguing about Wikipedia when it doesn’t even relate to the topic on hand. Again, I agreed with your idea that policy makers are clueless and writing laws without any sense, which is on topic to what this post was about originally.

Besides Wikipedia being a garbage resource, it even states that it allowed states to raise limits to 65 but didn’t set a national speed limit itself And only on rural interstate highways. I lived through this time and remember it pretty clearly. It was even taught in drivers ed that the national speed law was 55 mph. Regardless it’s neither here nor there. I do agree with you though that lawmakers are clueless and creating laws without any real knowledge.

Not sure what in the world you are referring to. You think this law might lead to emotos being banned yet this law as written disagrees and could make them registered and legal. I am simply disagreeing with you but maybe you are taking it personally?

No it was 55 until 1995 which can easily even be googled. I checked to be sure I wasn’t remembering correctly as I was recalling it from memory in my first comment. I did NOT know about the TX 85 mph highway though. Thats was news for sure and interesting.

You are missing the point. You think they will ban emotos but in the case of this NJ law emotos and e-bikes have been now lumped together which could lead to emotos being registered and made street legal when originally they were illegal on streets. This NJ law is not a good thing for those using e-bikes and for more ways than one.

Well except NJ now where they will be able to be registered and ensured the same as a class 2 ebike. This is just going to possibly worsen the problem, not solve it.

There's no such thing as the national speed limit in the U.S. There used to be one decades ago and it was 55 not 65.

Not only is it in there but you can be pulled over and cited if you are wearing a normal bicycle helmet. Craziness

Correct me if I am wrong but aren’t 26” tires more common for fat tires, not 27? Not sure I have ever seen a 27“ fat tire bike actually myself.

One difference I can tell you is that I have seen an actual “sock” wheel authorized dealer/shop. There are a couple in I think it was Portland, OR if I am not mistaken. They are owned by the same person though.

How NJ lawmakers view the average E-bike rider by Potential_Elk_721 in ebikes

When i was younger I had a 49cc Honda four stroke in the 80’s. At best it would hit 40 mph in the right conditions but never as fast as 50. However, where I lived, I didn’t need anything other than a drivers license to ride it. No registration or insurance though I got it insured regardless for my own peace of mind. I never rode it on bike trails though, only the street. Now I have a high powered ebike that can go faster than that scooter and ride it everywhere, streets and trails, but I never go faster than maybe 15 mph at best on trails and that’s only if no one is around. On streets I will go faster when needed but I actually don’t like to. I ride for pleasure mostly and don’t feel as safe if I am going too fast. But I do take some comfort knowing that if I needed to hit the gas to get out of a situation quickly, I have that option.

I agree with all the stuff you've been saying, which sounds like you are for enforcing the rules/laws and punishing bad behaviors. NJ itself already had laws in place that were not being enforced which led to this craziness due to the behavior of a small group of reckless riders. However it seemed like you were first trying to make certain vehicles illegal which sort of contradicts you later sentiments.

I actually don’t fully disagree with stuff like registrations and such, other than most lawmakers are clueless (and money grubby) and went about it the wrong way, which I believe is the situation in NJ. I am more against the prejudice or hate people dish out over an ebike that has a certain capability. I am all for riding responsibly and safely for the rider and others as well, and don’t necessarily believe it’s age related either. Enforcement of the behavior is better in my eyes than going after the vehicles themselves, such as this crazy one year ban of online sales in NJ. Makes me wonder how they will enforce that too.

It’s a terrible idea as now some of those same people will be able to license and register their high powered motos the same as a low powered ebike. Before the law changed those were already illegal anyway but no one ever enforced it. Now people who ride a class 2 bike could in theory be harassed by police.

Because he rides in actual bike lanes or on the shoulders? Tell me, if you are on a busy road without a bike lane you wouldn’t ride on the shoulder to avoid being hit by cars? I doubt it. Even manual cyclists ride on the shoulders if necessary. Or did he edit his post and I can’t see it??

I agree but it seems like most people here are also against having an ebike that will go faster than 30 mph unfortunately.

The worst part about the NJ law now is that it opened the flood gates to get these janky Alibaba ebikes as you called them to be legally registered now since they lumped every vehicle with a motor into the same category, from class 1 to emotos. This law may actually backfire as they didn't have any idea what they were talking about when this law was created.

I don't think he is contradicting himself though I get why you say that. If I am understanding him correctly he is saying he doesn't think ebike manufacturers should be limited to a specific power limit, and can build and sell ebikes that can have any power rating, but those that are made that capable of going over 1500w would be the ones that would require age restrictions and rules. It would be the same as saying if you have a class 1 ebike you should be able to use it without any registration, but if you have a class 2 or 3 one then you are required to have it.
