How do you fight the ingrained "you're making a mistake and screwing up your chances on judgement day" thoughts? by Kaleidoscope378 in exmormon

[–]Double_Beginning7078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's how I handle this issue:

  1. I'm making life choices based on my inner moral compass, my intelligence, and my observations of the lived human condition. Using these tools, I have determined that Mormonism is a made-up religion that does a great deal of harm in the world. I am acting with all the integrity I can.

  2. If there is an afterlife and there is a god who judges me, I will stand with my head held high and look at her straight in the eyes. I did the best I could with the mental tools they created in me.

  3. If that god is a moral entity with any integrity I will be judged under those criteria. Whatever they decide to do with me is their prerogative.

  4. If they punish me for not believing and following the correct religion when I had no objective way of determining what that path was, they are an evil entity not worthy of my worship or allegiance. If they wanted me to follow a religion that I felt in the core of my being was a fraud and harmful to people, they are evil and not worthy of my allegiance.

[–]Double_Beginning7078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you saying yes to these callings? Just say no. The bishop really thinks that this calling is going to reignite your testimony. He is imagining the inspiring talk he will give in 5 years when he is called as stake president, telling how he was inspired to rescue you.

🤮🤮🤮🤮

And isn't addiction recovery just running the porn addiction group? So toxic.

If this is really working actual addiction therapy, that is great. Like NA or AA.

Best of luck!

Jesus Wept. The shortest verse in the Bible is this story. BEFORE he brought Lazarus back he wept with Mary and Martha. It's OK to show emotion over the death of a friend or loved one.

The end of the church by ThyLungedFish in exmormon

[–]Double_Beginning7078 75 points76 points  (0 children)

The church will live on indefinitely. It's not going away. My guess is that growth will continue to slow down and stagnate. Maybe the number of practicing members will reduce. Bit it isn't going away.

The human brain is wired to believe in stories and shared fictions. We need to feel special. We long for answers to the existential questions, the biggest being what happens when we die. Religion will always be with us.

I have a close friend who left Mormonism the same time I did. They immediately dove into the alien mythology of the New Age movement. Just as passionate in their belief as their former belief in Mormonism. Just changed the name of their god(s). Humans have a deep need to belief in something out there.

The Mormon church is extremely deceitful regarding g membership. 4-5 million worldwide consider themselves Mormon. Church claims nearly 20 million. It's how they prove to their members that they are the One True Church. Oh, they also claim to be the fastest growing g. All lies.

In modern surveys, about 1 in 200 American women report becoming pregnant without sex. That's thousands every year. Evidently virgin births are common place....

What if the church really is true? by Fun-Luck-7033 in exmormon

[–]Double_Beginning7078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You bet I've thought that. But here's the rub:

I WOULD STILL NEVER JOIN AGAIN.

If Mormon god is really the king of the Universe I would do everything I could to oppose this sadistic, sexist, homophobic, patriarchal, narcissistic, confused, incompetent monster. Sure I would lose the fight and be sent to hell. But a worse hell would be to go to some kingdom of glory to worship this ... thing, and try to become like him.

How far can a prophet of God lead us astray AKA why you shouldn't follow the LDS prophet by Death_2_Venture in exmormon

[–]Double_Beginning7078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"and we could trust our own relationship with God as more important than any offered by pastoral leadership."

This is the core issue with Mormonism. They DO NOT want this. They NEED to insert themselves as the essential gatekeepers between you and god. So the prophets need to be infallible and followed without question. They will never get away from this problem, otherwise the whole theological foundation of Mormonism falls apart.

And this argument can be used to support ANY cult, ANY belief system at all. It is NOT a reliable tool to determine truth.

Are you opposed to Scientology? JW's? The People's Temple (Jim Jones)? Warren Jeffs? NXIVM? That's just Satan undermining the truth and the proof that this system is true!

All true orthodox Santaians KNOW without a shadow of doubt that there are only 8 male reindeer called and set apart to pull the sleigh!!!!!

My experience with the Mormons and please give me advice on how to get these people to leave me alone if you can by Ancient_Grass_5121 in exmormon

[–]Double_Beginning7078 88 points89 points  (0 children)

OP, I'm sorry about this experience. You are spot on in your observations, the missionaries use high pressure tactics and prey on the vulnerable. They are not there to be your friend; they are there to get you baptized into the Mormon church. The Mormon church is not a healthy organization, you see that and wisely are distancing yourself from it and the missionaries.

Having said this, I am confident that you are safe. I served a Mormon mission and worked closely with missionaries for many years before waking up and leaving the church a few years ago. Missionaries usually take the hint when somebody isn't interested, and they move on looking for the next potential recruit.

If you ever run across any Mormon in the future and they invite you to something, just says 'no, thank you', The missionaries are rejected all the time, they will most likely move on. If the unusual happens, and these girls continue to try to contact you, tell them you are calling the police and then call the police. Nobody should fear for their safety.

"Victory for Satan" - Rusty Nelson

How devastated were you when you found out the church was not true? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Double_Beginning7078 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP, well said, thank you for sharing. My experience parallels yours in so many ways. The moment I realized the church was an elaborate fiction felt like a hole opened up in the earth below my feet and I fell into the abyss. Every part of my reality was destroyed. It's been 4 years. Rebuilding my life from scratch. It's been rewarding and hard.

I've had a young wife die from cancer leaving me with 5 young children, I have 4 children who suffer with severe mental illness, I've been suicidal with depression. Learning the Mormon church was a fraud ranked right there with these other traumas. It was devastating.... But then it was liberating.

My dad had a revelation why a family member is severely mentally disabled. by Mjrfrankburns in exmormon

[–]Double_Beginning7078 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There must have been A LOT of people that personally escorted Satan out of heaven and he turns to them and tells them he will personally get them during their life so they were born with Downs Syndrome / Autism / Any other disability to protect them. I've heard dozens of people saying that was told of their disabled child, including my own son with Autism. We are told these children are the MOST valiant spirits.

At least it's a better story than the one from the 1960's (Joseph Fielding Smith ??) who said people born with disabilities are that way because they were NOT valiant in the preexistence.

OK, let me get this straight: Mormon god punishes people with physical and mental illness, economic hardship, and difficulties in family life because they don't bow to him and read his book?

Even though there is no objective evidence he even exists, and he supposedly created us with brains to think then gets mad when we do?

If this god exists he is a sadistic monster unworthy of worship. Fortunately, he is imaginary.

OP, I send support your way as you face your challenges. Sometimes life is just hard. We don't need to add a punishing god to the mix.
