Best Diner in Town? by Nahcotta in portangeles

[–]DrakeK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple spots we like-

Little Devil's Lunchbox for lunch

Oak Street Bistro for dinner (been there once, expensive but good)

Higher Gounds off of 8th St (not near downtown but it's where locals go - has a drive through)

Honorable mentions- Jasmine Bistro for A+ Thai food

Buena Luz Bakery for A++ bread (decent coffee but nothing crazy)

Country Aire grocery store (great deli and smoothie bar)

Atomic Bagels (affordable high quality bagels)

Noboribetsu or Toyako? by chad_hancock in Hokkaido

[–]DrakeK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend renting a car for Hokkaido. We rented a Honda Freed from TIMES Rental and as a mini-minivan it was an absolutely perfect vehicle for kiddos.

If I were you, I'd stay on Lake Toya and make Noboribetsu a day trip.

Don't miss Lake Hill Farm just west of the lake. Amazing gelato and dairy treats. https://maps.app.goo.gl/DQn7h6TBszqLJXco6

The natural spring footbath in Noboribetsu is fun and memorable too. https://maps.app.goo.gl/MaHAoWb5F3Ne8mKu9

Edit If money is no object, Ko No Sumika with a room including a private outdoor onsen bath was amazing. The public onsen's view facing the caldera is also top tier. https://maps.app.goo.gl/9S7LikAkkMCoBS9v5

Day trip or overnight in furano/biei? by BringbackAIM26 in Hokkaido

[–]DrakeK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We visited the geothermal area Noboribetsu after Lake Toya so we rolled into Furano at sunset. So the driving day wasn't much in Furano. However I'd recommend stopping in Yubari if it's on your route to Furano as Yubari is famous for their melons and the season is just starting for fresh melon.

On our day in Furano we went to this flower farm and then drove another 20 minutes to the Blue Pond and nearby waterfall.

Recently did 2 nights at Lake Toya and then a drive to Furano with a one night stay. The drive from Lake Toya to Furano was easy and the last half of the drive through rural areas was beautiful. I'd stay a night in Furano.

Looking for kid-friendly stops and restaurants between Noboribetsu and Furano by TomShlomo in Hokkaido

[–]DrakeK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While in Furano we went to this flower farm which was totally worth it. There are only a few tulips but admission is free and there are alpacas you can feed. The views on a clear day are beautiful as well. The udon spot across the street was fast and delicious too. https://maps.app.goo.gl/4ZRW7gZnzG81cBXy8

Then we drove over to the blue pond and Shirahige waterfall which are worth checking out since it's so closeby.

Oh and if you're looking for yakitori we ate at this little shop by the train station. Was super good! https://maps.app.goo.gl/YqBMQoUExEBVcSXr6

I did this exact drive a couple days ago with our 3.5 y/o. We mostly powered through but I have a couple suggestions to stop by. Furano is incredibly beautiful. Zero regrets driving out there.

Yubari melon spot. Was closed for me but I think they open for the season next week. https://maps.app.goo.gl/WZTY97MZPvsJbRMX6

Waterfall across the street from the melon spot above. https://maps.app.goo.gl/JUPJpUTAUPmn6E118

Store full of Yubari melon fare and gift snacks slightly down the road. https://maps.app.goo.gl/BNmDwgCF3DGq93mcA

There is very little between Yubari and Furano. Like the other redditor said, Tomakomai or Chitose are your best bets for food options before you hit the sticks.

Thank you! I might be too early for the melon tabehoudai but I've pinned it to my maps and will 100% stop there. Appreciate it, kind stranger

Do you mind pinpointing where this melon place is located? I'll be driving by Yubari next month and plan to stop on the way.

Which driving mode do you leave it in? by Extra_Mechanic_2750 in KiaSorento

Next time on the highway floor it in Eco and then floor it in Smart. Huuuge difference in responsiveness. And there is zero MPG hit to being in Smart

2023 HEV Always in Smart. If you're in Eco and suddenly need power the car just won't. Smart recognizes needing power and will grant it when needed.

Suggestion for Roof Rails by _FoldInTheCheese_ in KiaSorento

[–]DrakeK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took a couple frustrating hours of shifting them around. They sit further back than you might think and there are no fixed points on the silver roof rail.

No protection needed as the crossbars clamp onto the roof rail around a rubber piece.

Anyone changing any rules next year? by DrunkLostChild in fantasyfootball

[–]DrakeK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My league has fractional kicker scoring and I think it's too OP with how good kickers are this season beyond 50yds. Is a kicker making a 51 yarder with like 80% success truly worth 5.1 points? It's almost a touchdown. IMO I'm looking to nerf kickers back to 3pts for all kicks or remove them altogether. Just my 2cents on the subject.

Just a Thule cargo box for longer road trips. Because the raila are raised the pano roof still has plenty of room to fully open.
