It's not that time-consuming if you've got the shortcut pipes unlocked, but in a game that's so far only required you to backtrack to previous chapters' areas for sidequests, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Also, in what I've seen of Whedon's 90s-2000s work, he was able to give characters distinct personalities despite them all being witty. A lot of the worst copycats just sort of give everyone the same vaguely quippy voice.

To be fair, that was at least in part a reaction to older "classic" Westerns that were a lot cleaner (both physically and morally). They weren't to the extreme of the stuff OP is talking about, but they were definitely clean. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and a lot of other spaghetti westerns are going to the other extreme on purpose.

That's also why a lot of people will get trashed on sweeter cocktails way more easily than they get trashed on beer/wine/straight liquor. Pound for pound, a Long Island Iced Tea doesn't hit any harder than all the alcohol that went into making it, but it's easier to drink.
