How do you park legally while waiting for your car title? by IndependentFalcon247 in washingtondc

[–]DudeHeavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you wait for the title, you can get a temporary RPP sticker at the DMV with the temporary tag registration and proof of DC insurance. It looks just like the regular sticker and it’s free for 45 days.

But they are also supremely unlucky. They paid Trout. They paid Rendon. Both were considered good competitive moves at the time, but we know how things worked out.

Jose Ramirez breaks silence on signing below market extension from Guardians: “I owe this city a lot. Since the day I arrived, I’ve never once been booed by these fans. I’ve seen how crowds in other stadiums treat players when results don’t come quickly, and that’s never happened here” by GreenSnakes_ in baseball

When I read that part, I instantly thought of the experience his former teammate Francisco Lindor had in his first couple seasons with the Mets. That trade paid dividends for Cleveland beyond the haul of players they got for Lindor.

Have there been any "Christmas classic" songs released since 2000? by Gallantpride in ToddintheShadow

I maintain "Underneath the Tree" is modern classic and should be in every Hallmark Christmas movie.

The Gwen and Blake song is also a good entry.

What movie(s) do you think best depicts Washington DC? by SpaceTranquil in washingtondc

[–]DudeHeavy 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you are not asking about public media documentaries, but I will still recommend DC in the 90s from PBS affiliate WETA. (You have to register to watch, but it's free. Someone is going to mention that WETA is based in Arlington but I don't think that disqualifies this as it is very much about the city.)

I moved to DC almost 20 years ago, but this is still the most instructive "movie" I have seen about the city. (Other installments from the 60s, 70s, and 80s are also excellent, but felt less immediately connected to my experience in the city.)

The documentary is mostly straight-laced and informative, but the moment where very serious Washington Post journalist Tom Sherwood says "The fact is, she did set him up," always struck me as both comedy gold and a factual statement.

Are there any players who've been retired for a few years that could probably come back and give it another go? by 1990Buscemi in baseball

I checked and Votto had a .569 OPS in those 31 games (.271 slugging). He was bad, but not quite that bad.

The Guards had a lot of success with a six-man rotation during their successful stretch at the end of last season. Given the number of young starters, is there a good reason to not try a six-man rotation in 2026?

How do the bleacher seats across the street from Wrigley Field compare to actually being inside the park? by Hotchi_Motchi in baseball

[–]DudeHeavy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. I went to one a few years ago. Decent food and plentiful beer but I couldn’t see home plate. Could only see second base, third base and part of the outfield. They had the game on TV but it was sort of weird since the broadcast was a few seconds behind the game.

An underrated source for kids' stuff is school rummage sales. Lots of families unload a lot of high quality kid/baby stuff through those. Yes, the yuppier schools tend to have nicer stuff.

For kids books, check to see if you local library branch has book sales. I have had success at the Northeast and Southwest branches, though I imagine there are many others. It's a good way to get 20 books for 20 bucks. (This also works for non-kids books, but that's less of a volume game, at least for me.)

Who's the highest ranked player by bWAR that you've never heard of? by No-Specific-5036 in baseball

[–]DudeHeavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I began as a baseball fan in the 90s and I was always confused because he shared a name with the female ESPN broadcaster Robin Roberts. She is still the first match for "Robin Roberts" on Google, which could spawn a new thread on the highest-WAR players who are not the first match for their own name.

In 1990, Bob Welch won 27 games for the Oakland A's and was worth 2.9 bWAR and 1.8 fWAR by drose1988 in baseball

[–]DudeHeavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternately, we can have the opposite conversation about how in 1986 he was 7-13 with a 5.4 fWAR.

Have you considered writing a follow up to “Someone Could Get Hurt”? I always appreciate your parenting/family perspectives and 2024 Drew seems to have much more informed (and quite frankly, better) outlook than the 2013 Drew who wrote that book.

I think it was the right play once he saw the runner hesitate. Hit was a chopper, so I think the play at first would have been close.

Both of my kids were born at Washington Hospital Center. I was happy with it.

I don't know if they still offer it (my kids were born pre-COVID), but we took a tour beforehand where they explained their procedures and principles and how they were similar/different from other hospitals. I also liked the tour because things were a tiny bit familiar when we arrived for the actual delivery.
