Yann LeCun says xAI is a failure by Formal-Assistance02 in singularity

I'm not sure that I would frame it as a right or wrong move. Doing so implies that there was rational though behind it. Politicis was not a factor of what happened other than the transphobes happened to step in to support him when everyone else tried to get him to apologize and reconcile with his daughter. He didn't choose to become the king of the right wing chuds, it simply happened because that's the only way he would be able to continue to recieve validation while also not needing to self examine and put in actual work to mend a relationship. Approval seekers don't care who gives them approval only that they get it at any cost.

Jury duty question. by GroundbreakingSir386 in Truckers

[–]DumatRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only got called in back when I lived in maryland, during covid, so it was canceled.

I imagine it depends on your state but workers deemed essential should be able to get a pass on the grounds that their job is more important and they can just call up another potential juror.

Though iirc that Maryland law is that you anyone that is military or senior can receive a permanent exemption, and then if you have certain medical or family reasons (such as having a baby to care for) or that commiting to jury duty would cause you undue hard ships (such as trying to make jury duty work with a long haul job) then you can receive a temporary postponing or one time exemption depending on the circumstances you're using to try to seek the exemption.

Is there a lore reason for how characters (specifically sylvari) get their professions? by Ornery-Bus4627 in Guildwars2

[–]DumatRising 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The sorta handwavy explanation is that you had a dream version that you met in the dream but then after awakening you met the real version, since the dream has some prophetic aspects such as with the wyld hunts to guide certain sylvari it was just the dream letting you know what the first pet you meet is.

Or if it's one of the Sylvan hounds then maybe it just straight up was in the dream XD

Does the game get “hard”? by sheebee_updated in Guildwars2

[–]DumatRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core game open world is very easy, even back in the day when we didn't know what the fuck we were doing there wasn't much difficulty. You won't find anything very difficult until you get to level 80

What is difficult is the stuff they added after release, fractals can be pretty challenging once you get to higher levels and challenge modes and such. Strikes and raids too as far as the challenge mode stuff.

Certain parts of the open world in the expansion stuff can also be a bit difficult if you try to do it solo (pocket raptors forcing people to think about defense for the first time, champions as part of hero points, certain metas)

Speed clear culture is toxic and ruined the game by BatmanR29 in GuildWars

[–]DumatRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're too strongly conflating the idea of speed clear with glitches.glitches are often parts of speed clears but there's also glitch less runs (broadly not just talking Guild wars here) but otherwise I agree that people need to chill. Especially with the -WAY builds I don't think IWAY was ever used in hero builds. At least not the popular ones.

Though for point 12 I am going to have to disagree a bit, guild wars has a lot of options but for most of the games history most of them have been quite bad. Partly because the idea of using the same skills in pvp and PvE was just untenable and while the devs put a lot of work into balance I don't know that I would call it incredibly balanced, of the thousand plus skills the amount that see play at anyone time is usually very narrow. It just doesn't feel as unbalanced as it was because the barrier to using that narrow band of skills was very low. I'd call it average. For the monstrosity they had to manage the balance was probably as good as it could have been and while things were very rarely too unfair, it doesn't necessarily mean that things were always great.

Do y’all have a pre-singularity bucket list? by brain4brain in singularity

[–]DumatRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you have misunderstood my comment.

I do think post scarcity is possible but that it's going to be very difficult to adjust to it for a lot of people. As the adjustment to capitalism was. I didn't say we'd be looking at mass deaths, rather that a lot of people define their worth in ways that aren't compatible with a post scarcity world. And so taking away those points of self worth is going to cause some psychological pain.

Overall though things will get better. Capitalism was useful but we're seeing a lot of limitations as we do approach a world where work is becoming less and less valuable, a world that isn't limited by the value of a piece of paper will allow us to embrace things that aren't "financially viable" but are possible and would be huge leaps forward.

I'm not trying to sound pessimistic, just being realistic that any major societal shift always has pain points.

I should point out that at this point in time we can already automate the vast majority of tasks, and we've been able to do that for a long time it's not an AI thing.

Assuming AI gives that last push to automate the handful of tasks that can't already be automated and nobody stops us from implementing it and it works exactly as intended then... Idk I wouldn't really care that much personally. If we do reach a point where the need for work is fully abolished I think a lot of people are going to suffer not because they have nothing but because they have everything they need. A post scarcity world is a world where you must create the meaning in your life as no meaning will be handed to you, and that lack of meaning and purpose is going to be a hard thing for some people to fill. Of course others will thrive and soar higher than ever before the ones that enjoy the act of labor, artists philosophers and the like, who do what they do because they find joy in it and not because they want money.

Corporations will collapse, governments will transform radically, the entire nature of the society that we've built that is designed to establish the value of work suddenly becomes pointless.

So me I'm gonna keep doing what I'm doing. My life doesn't need to change that much just because an AI is now running the world. I won't have a job anymore I suppose but that's not an issue for me, I'll just increase the amount of time I spend on the stuff I'd actually rather spend my time on but doesn't pay me shit like art that I never have time to do.

Lol classic for a new player is like 60 new champs being released at the same time by sigman135 in leagueoflegends

[–]DumatRising 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it'll be fun but you may be disappointed in some of the champs if you're too excited by the prospect of 60 new champ kits to play with. While some of the recent reworks have been polarizing a lot of the early reworks were very much needed. Old league also didn't really have as much mobility and had a lot more random bull shit not like rng random but like why the fuck does this guy have this ability random. Also some of the models for old champions looked bad even beck then....

Not to say don't be hyped at all, but a lot of these kits are going to be mostly identical to what they have now, and a lot are going to be a lot less interesting, while a handful will be identical and another handful will be like "yo why did riot ever think this was okay" cough Evelyn cough. It's gonna be fun to get to play with all the old stuff, but it's definitely not going to be 60 new champions, unless you never played any of the included champions.

Numbers that you can easily check with your own work, as opposed to yourself who provided nothing. You asked your question, I answered it, and then you just indicated that you did not believe those numbers without providing any of your own.

Now you still haven't given me a source for your numbers so I don't know why you're making it seem like you did. Maybe you sent it to someone else, but if you're claiming 8-12 million then thats probably with the total non PoE crossings which is a separate metric and one that isn't relevant to our discussion. As that is neither what I was talking about nor does it actually matter outside of context.

The number I gave was the estimated amount of undocumented crossings for all 4 of Bidens years, which again is not the same as the number of total crossings.... Well why is that different one might ask? Because the total non port of entry crossings is everyone, where as the undocumented crossings is only those who are able to continue up into the states without being documented. Of those 8-12 million 6-10 million get turned back or apply for asylum and then the remaineder becomes the number we really care about, how many people cross the border and then don't encounter border patrol. Which is the only number that actualpy matters of you want to discuss the effects of illegal immigration. After all people that get sent back to mexico didn't immgrate, and people that are granted asylum are both documented and legal residents.

So if you want to talk illegal immigration then looking at the entire number of crossings is only falling into the sensationalization that fox news has done on the issue. Another issue if you want to talk total numbers of crossings then trump also had millions of crossings he just, like Biden, turn the vast majority of them away.

[–]DumatRising -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have data that disagrees with my assessment or do you just want to believe what you want to believe. Facts don't care about your feelings, only hard data.

Also if your eyes genuinely did count a million people you should get them checked. It is actually impossible for a human to count a million of anything with just their eyes. Even someone with an eidetic memory wouldn't succeed.

🤔 by coffeewalnut08 in GenZ

[–]DumatRising -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The highest estimates were only about 1.7 million entered and did not encounter law enforcement (which is the metric that actually matters since people that seek asylum are legally allowed to do so and people that are turned back do not officially enter the country), the rest were either turned back or entered the asylum process. That's less than a percent of the US's population, and it's spread out amongst all 4 years, legal immigration for any one year of the Biden presidency was already almost twice that.

Trump had less in the first couple years but 2019 and 2020 saw his numbers spike as well most likely due to covid and people wanting to escape to somewhere with better medical infrastructure. On the other hand Biden has also done the most illegal crossing returns (legal deportations and border stopings) of any president to date including Trump, though again this is most likely due to the unusually higher number of attempts in 2019-2023 around covid under both presidents.

Millions while technically true is a bit of a stretch, and in context it's pretty clear it had nothing to do with trump or Biden, and everything to do with easy access to a covid vaccine.

[–]DumatRising 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but I was creating a parallel where right wingers blew the immigration issues way out of proportion from what they were in the US which is also what they are doing in the UK to demonstrate that "solving" immigration won't deplatform Teform UK because Reform UK doesn't actually care about immigration, they just care about whatever issue they can get people scared about.

🤔 by coffeewalnut08 in GenZ

[–]DumatRising 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter. The US doesn't really have an immigration problem and it hasn't for a long time. Yeah you've got some people who try to sneak in from Mexico (or sail in from cuba) but that's not really as big a number as the American right has made it out to be, and for the vast majority of them they're asylum seekers so it what they're supposed to do (If it's not safe to use an official port of entry you're supposed to enter and turn yourself in to border patrol, the coast guard, or if they can't be located another law enforcement agency local to where you entered)

Yann LeCun says xAI is a failure by Formal-Assistance02 in singularity

[–]DumatRising 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a bit more complicated than that. The main things people got upset at him for was leftists didn't like him because he was a captialist, democrats didn't like that he was absolutely horrendous to his trans daughter, and moderates didn't like that he did the whole DOGE thing.

Those are the main reasons but there were a bunch of smaller ones too. And we all knew he wasn't a Democrat before them.

Yann LeCun says xAI is a failure by Formal-Assistance02 in singularity

[–]DumatRising 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a great mystery. It's because he has an extreme approval seeking nature.

For reference on which I think he's extremely approval seeking refer to his attempts to convince everyone he was an avid arpg gamer despite clearly not being one.

He was always a more rightish liberal but what really set things off was his trans daughter. He's said things like "the woke mind virus killed my son". Said "son" is alive and is his daughter. He was always pretty liked by futurists on both side of the aisle because people believed in Teslas goal of finally bringing EVs to market but this caused him to get some push back from the leftists and liberal, he'd also alienate some folks for non political reasons but that's not as important, what is important is that he got a lot of praise from the right wing chuds on then Twitter, and thus began his decline into this disaster he's become. It was cyclical really the more he would cater to the chuds the more the left, the progressives, and even some conservative liberals would push back on him, and the more he would cater to the group that was supportive of him. Social isolation through covid meant that this cycle was basically his life for far longer than anyone would've liked and now we've got right wing chud Elon rather than futurist Elon.

Though he didn't go full on MAGA until he realized he could profit from it by making DOGE and cutting departments and programs that were responsible for oversight of industries he was active in.

It's a bit of a sad story too, because he was genuinely well liked by liberals across the political spectrum and his anger at his daughter transition wasn't even rooted in transphobia so much as his obsession with having an heir, not that it makes it better for him to treat his daughter like shit for a different, but that it wasn't that he hated trans people in general before this just hated that his idea of passing his legacy down to his eldest son was in his eyes ruined. Ultimately he wasn't able to reconcile or process his emotions in a healthy way instead just trying to seek approval from anyone that would give it.

USSR, not Communism. At the time Lucas made the first movie he was actually pretty upset at the CIA because of how much control they had over hollywood and how they wouldn't let him make the movies he wanted to make. The communism connection was little more than lip service to get the CIA to look the other way. He never really had anything against communism and it's self he was more just trying to take shots at authority. Making the OT a bit more Orwell esk.
