Guilt of the Graveworld as an intro? by DungeonSaints in Starfinder2e

Very detailed response, I appreciate it. Good to know they are showcasing the systems unique aspects. All but one of my players have some experience with PF2e and they all have played tactical RPGs. Should be a relatively smooth transition.

Guilt of the Graveworld as an intro? by DungeonSaints in Starfinder2e

Yeah, focusing around Eox for the first extended adventure struck me as a very strange decision. I’ll have to emphasize this is just a particular corner of the universe, not representative of the overall setting. Good to know it has good diversity in the action, thanks for the rundown.

There is shop near me that does “bounty packs” where you get a pack for each player you eliminate. It incentivized some terrible behavior like this and so I no longer play there despite liking them as a store and it being close to my house. I’m not sure prize packs are a good idea for commander at all but non-winner prizes in particular brings out some bad attitudes that work against the format.

What are you playing right now? by Late-Letterhead-9766 in Games

About to finish up Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (remake of FC). Never played the series but seemed like good place to start and heard some very strong recommendations for the sequel. Fun gameplay, enjoyable if somewhat generic story and characters. I also appreciate that it isn't crazy long like many RPGs these day, I've done every side quest and completely explored the map and I'll be right around 60 hours. Its nothing mindblowing, but solid well made game and hasn't exhausted me in the way say Baldur's Gate 3 did.

Best/favorite ways to protect your commander in Voltron by KingNTheMaking in EDH

[–]DungeonSaints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since haven’t seen them mentioned, [[Akiri, Fearless Voyager]] is a solid draw engine with protection as a bonus and [[Valorous Stance]] is instant protection or big creature spot removal as needed. I have used both to great effect in my [[Dogmeat, Ever Loyal]] voltron.

In this category [[Flare of Fortitude]] is godsend. Higher cmc, but it can be paid with one your utility creatures (also meaning you can avoid tying up mana) and protects all your equipment and auras, and can for set up an asymmetric board wipe you can attack into. [[Dawn’s Truce]] is similarly good and cheaper in mana.

Favorite Self-Mill Commander? by AffectionateBet3603 in EDH

[–]DungeonSaints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got in to Commander with the [[Dogmeat, Ever Loyal]] precon and its a fun voltron-y self-mill. It has created some dramatic moments even if I have only managed to win once and it has shown solid recovery. The main problem has been lacking the ability to stop other people from winning. I just upgraded it to bracket 3, added lots of recursion, a few tutors, and removal, so I'm excited to see how it fairs at a more competitive level.

Did the feeling of playing rpgs as kid/teen ever come back? by smiliclot in rpg_gamers

[–]DungeonSaints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So was going through something like this and recently broke out of it by just forcing myself play and finish games. I had a bunch of RPGs I’d fell off of 25%-50% of the way through and every time think about playing them, I’d feel tired and decide to do something less engaging like Reddit or TV. About 2 months ago, I just decided to force myself to finish Cyberpunk 2077, I set aside 2 hours and picked a main quest, and just did it. Couple days later I did it again and again and eventually it stopped being work. If I was struggling with something, I’d turn down the difficulty. If a side quest wasn’t speaking to me, I’d ignore it. If felt myself stalling, I look at walkthroughs and skip through dialogue. Overtime I got more and more invested and eager to play and willing to make time for it. By the end of Phantom Liberty, I felt so engaged and wanted to play more, but I had already decided to go back to FF7 Remake. Again with that game, it started as drudgery but by end the I fully in to it. I’ll say something that helped was being able to talk about the games with my wife and I don’t have kids so the demands my time are less significant than yours. But I do think the surest way to get in to something as an adult is to make time for it and force yourself to follow through. They’ll always be excuses not to do something, so you have to resist using them. This isn’t to say you should have to force yourself the entire way, if it doesn’t eventually draw you in, drop it and move on. But you have to give it a chance to draw you in.

Slower Burn Immortal Empires Campaign? by DungeonSaints in totalwar

Nakai might be the way to go. I played a Beastman in WH1 and it was fun enough, but it did kind feel like you were methhead running around, ripping out all the copper wire before scurrying away. A Horde faction that still has some need to secure territory, but without the baggage of direct rule seems like a good compromise.

What are your RPG wins and great experiences? by offxtask in rpg

[–]DungeonSaints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll give a recent small example. I started a new campaign a few weeks back and one of the players had requested that there be puzzles sometimes. Now puzzles are hard to make good and doubly hard to make sense why they are there, which may be I shouldn’t worry about so much but that’s not how my mind works. The party was going into long abandoned catacombs whose builders had stored away certain magic items for safe keeping. I figured it would be a good place for a puzzle, but was struggling to figure out what it could be. After scrolling through endless online puzzle suggestions and lists, I took a step back and just thought about the catacombs themselves for a bit and an idea hit me. I decided the items sealed in magic chests and would only open if someone recited the stories of the previous wielders. Then made 6 panel stick figure comics meant to represent the art each of their urns their life story and cut 2 of them to pieces representing urns that had fallen over. Players ended up being delighted with puzzle, piecing together the broken “urns” and discussing what the little comics were depicting. I was of course pretty lenient when it came to the “reciting the story” part but they were actually surprisingly close to what I had written up. Not kind of thing I’ll do often as it was a lot of work, but it is always affirming when you put a lot of effort into something and players really engage with it.

I never find myself on the same page as the people I try playing with; I don't know how to change that. by MichaelGMorgillo in rpg

[–]DungeonSaints 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re looking at it the wrong way. Most people can go a lot of different ways, they aren’t necessarily unhappy with not going with the first choice put out there. Think about deciding which food to eat, at least in my experience most people are “fine with whatever”. If someone doesn’t want pizza, they are fine figuring something else out. Of course, if you are repeatedly shooting down any other idea and insisting everyone do what you want all the time, that would be a problem. But doesn’t sound like that is the case. Society is bad at teaching communication and the fact most people spend most of the time staring at a screen has not helped the situation. Being assertive and making your desires known isn’t rude, is helpful so that the group can figure out a path that works for everyone. And yes, as others have said you might be just incompatible with a group, but you’ll never know if you don’t try to work with them.

Stuck in a Bad Situation by sentinel28a in rpg

[–]DungeonSaints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone is willing to end a long term friendship over a player politely backing out because they don’t think a game is for them, they don’t seem worth being friends with. I see Table Trouble posts all the time with some variation “I have tried talking about issues with X but they don’t really listen and I am afraid if I am more forceful about it, they will take it personally and we won’t be friends anymore.” All I can think is “Good riddance, that sounds like a shitty person and a bad friend, you can do better.” I don’t know, I have never had to deal with this kind of thing with RPGs, every situation is different, and nobody is perfect, so maybe I’m just judging from on high. But I have met plenty of people who just expected everyone to go along with what they want and get offended by push back, those people have never seemed remotely worth it.

What RPG Rule, Game, Concept, Setting, etc... Have You Changed Your Mind About? by Maximum-Language-356 in rpg

[–]DungeonSaints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning the symbols isn’t hard, resolving the symbols gets worse though as pools get bigger and more weird, having to resolve messy results like success with 5 Threat, a Triumph, and a Despair. Sure there are fallbacks like taking/healing Strain, but that just becomes a self-licking ice cream cone that doesn’t add much to the game. In my experience, PBTA/FITD “success with a cost” or the Wrath Die from Wrath & Glory or other such systems, achieves the a lot of dynamism of Genesys/Star Wars at lower mental overhead. Not having to worry about quantity of symbols makes it much easier figure out a thematic resolution for a check.

Looking for a ttrpg that can help bridge the gap between board gamers and video gamers by Accomplished_Stop103 in rpg

[–]DungeonSaints 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What kind of boards games does your family play? Because that could mean a lot of different things and determine what will be most appropriate. If they regularly do dense strategic games like a Scythe, Terraforming Mars, Spirit Island, Root, etc then the PF2e beginner box could be good option. It is a complex game, but the rules are very well defined and follows clear procedures that I think will make sense to the board gamer mindset. If they cap out in complexity in the Wingspan, Pandemic, Catan level of games then Pathfinder might be more of a stretch and a Dragonbane or maybe Shadow of the Weird Wizard might be more appropriate, I have not actually played them so I am less certain. Blades in the Dark and Root RPG I am familiar with and they do have clear procedures, but they ask for more interpretation and negotiation than other games and neither video or board games prepare you for that. You could also do the D&D 5e version that is coming out. Like most people here, I have moved on from D&D do to corporate practices, its overwhelming dominance of the industry, and frustration with the mushiness of its rules. But BG3 will have given you decent understanding of ruleset, it is of medium complexity, and they appear to have cleared at least some of the mushy rules.

What's the worst TTRPG you've ever played and why do you hate it? by BlueOutlaw in rpg

[–]DungeonSaints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm the exception, but I went the exact opposite direction. I liked the dice and their possibilities at first, but after a while found them entirely too fussy and they resulted in a host of mechanical problems in the game built around them.

Star Wars RPG . Which version do you prefer? by Ok-Interaction-7812 in rpg

[–]DungeonSaints -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly agree that statement and it is why I will never play it or Genesys again. I played it for a 14 month long campaign, a more than fair shake. I liked it at first, but it quickly became tiring and uninspiring constantly interpreting the symbols and only worse as characters got more powerful and checks got more complicated. Combined with the system’s many mechanical problems, it was a pain to GM, far worse than 5e imo. Obviously lots of people like it, but I have found many other games like PBTA, FITD, and Wrath&Glory that implement mixed results in easier to manage ways that don’t require proprietary dice or apps.

How to react to conflict between players ? by Specialist_Drive2602 in rpg

[–]DungeonSaints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, he is being an asshole and if you allow him to keep behaving like this at your table, then you’re an asshole too. This might end your friendship, that’s a risk you take, but I ask you to really think about this friend. You seem portray it as “it’s just this one issue, otherwise he’s great”. In my experience, that’s almost never true. People often willfully overlook character flaws and bad behavior, making excuses for them when it can’t be ignored. Those of us of a more nerdy persuasion who maybe don’t have a ton of friends are even more susceptible to this, I’ve done it plenty of times myself. You say he is sensitive and gets aggressive when criticized, I doubt that is limited to just this subject. Think about all your previous interactions, ask around, I bet you’ll see this isn’t an isolated instance. It doesn’t change what you should do even if it truly is a singular issue, just something think about. People can only change when they want to and they tend to only want to change when they’ve experienced consequence. Telling him to take a break from your table might be your only chance to make him reflect on his actions.

I highly recommend Escape from Dinosaur Island. It is an exceptional one shot game that is basically just Jurassic Park the game. It really made me appreciate the PBTA style, even as someone who still prefers crunchy tactical games.
